Riding A Divvy Is Safer Than Riding A Personal Bike

divvybikes

(from chicagoist.com)

Given the panic when Divvy first launched in 2013, you might have thought the city was taking the training wheels off droves of teetering wannabe bicyclists and unleashing them onto the streets. Videos confirming that clueless bike riders were wandering down Lake Shore Drive or onto the Dan Ryan didn’t help. But here’s a shocking statistic: three years later, zero fatalities have been associated with bike sharing in Chicago. Typically five to eight cyclists a year die in Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune. (READ MORE HERE)

No accidents have happened on Divvy because I haven’t been on one!! Seriously,  In the last 8 months I’ve almost broken my ankle misjudging a step at a CHVRCHES show last year. Then I dropped a flower vase on my foot in the middle of the night which almost paralyzed my whole entire left side for a day and then the night of the Jake Bugg show I face planted into the street into oncoming traffic in Wrigleyville. Accident prone much? And before you ask NO I WASN’T DRINKING!!…Okay maybe a few beverages, but still!! I like the Divvy bikes but I always feel as though they are more for friends visiting from out of town to try. If I wasn’t terrified of cycling in Chicago I would rent one. Maybe if they made a sweet bike trail in Grant Park where I wasn’t around other people or near the edge of the Chicago River or Lake Michigan ? Until then, I gotta go my train is here.. – @marconibologna

Bike that looks like a car

I often have considered biking to work. Many of my co-workers do when the weather is nice. The main thing stopping me is that I’m terrified.  I’ve seen people get hit in traffic. That never looks fun. Maybe all cyclists have ever needed is to look more like a car? @marconibologna

Would You Drink Jon Lester’s Glove?

CfuhfTfUEAAZkiy

The Virgin Hotel is offering up an interesting drink for Cub fans. The “Never Quit.” Made from vodka infused with one of Lester’s gloves. According to the Virgin Hotel, it’s a “vodka infused leather cocktail with peanut syrup and leaf alcohol that smells of fresh cut grass. Top it off with a splash of Old Style, and you’ve got yourself a true Wrigley taste sensation.”

But, it is for a good cause. $1 from each of the $11 drinks will go to Lester’s charity. READ MORE from the Chicago Tribue and the @VirginHotelsChi.

Walk The Moon Cancels Upcoming Tour

 wtm
From the band’s facebook page:

Friends,

We are deeply sorry to say that, due to a serious illness in Nick’s family, we must cancel this summer’s Work This Body Tour. For many years now, Nick’s dad has been suffering from Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Unfortunately, it’s reached a point where he needs to come home and focus on his family for awhile. Out of respect for the immediate commitments we’ve made, we will play out the rest of our shows in May – after that, we will be taking a break from the road. All tickets to our headline shows in July + August will be refunded. With a heavy heart we send our gratitude out to our team, our industry friends, and most importantly our fans for their understanding and support. Through this time, it continues to be our dream and our mission to take the darkness in our lives and mold it into light + color. The only way out is through. <+>

Love,
WALK THE MOON

Our thoughts go out to Nick and his family during this tough time.  Alzheimer’s is such a horrible disease that sadly is very common.  There are more than 3 million US cases per year.  It robs those afflicted of themselves slowly by stealing first their memories and then their awareness and cognitive function.  My Grandfather and therefore entire family battled with it for years.  I really hope a cure can be found soon.  You can read more information on Alzheimer’s Disease HERE  And if you would like to talk to someone about Alzheimer’s, there is a 24/7 Helpline: 1.800.272.3900

Bears Sched copy

The Bears will start on the road in Houston on 9/11. They’ll also see four primetime games this year. Two Monday nighters, one Sunday night and one Thursday game coming our way this season. And hopefully Santa has a win in his sack for the Christmas Eve game at home with Washington.

Check out the Bears site for more on the schedule and tickets.

Dunkin Shoots and Scores

Hawks cup

A Dunkin’ Donuts’ in St. Louis was sent a bunch of cups that were probably meant for Chicago and right before game one between the Blackhawks and Blues. So, they spent the day serving up coffee to Blues fans out of Hawks cups. Needless to say, Blues fans were not thrilled. Dunkin’ says it was simply a shipping error.

Gotcha a “shipping error.” Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge.

Even though the Hawks dropped game one in St. Louis 1-0 it’s still nice to know this little dig made it through. Check out more from Yahoo Sports.

Bill & Ted are back at it again!

Looks like Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will be returning as Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan and Bill S. Preston for one more excellent adventure! Alex Winter, who plays Bill S. Preston, announced that they have been working on a script for the past 6 years with the original writers and that it’s finally complete along with having a Director ready and a studio willing to back the project! The only issue standing in the way, according to Winter, is finding the appropriate start date to start filming between Reeves and his schedule.

Where would you like to see Bill and Ted go in their next adventure??

Blackhawks could end the Blues series in one game

bhftw

(from chicagotribune.com)

Is it possible the Blackhawks-Blues playoff series could be over Wednesday night if the Hawks win? The Blues coach previewed the playoff series by talking about starting at the top with the defending Stanley Cup champions. He said the Hawks’ skill isn’t as big an obstacle as their resolve. (READ MORE HERE)

So it sounds as if we’re in their head. Sure you have to have the skill that it takes to win which obviously the Blackhawks do but if you can get inside someone’s psyche it makes it easier to catch them making mistakes. Why do you think there’s so much trash talk in sports. You throw someone off their game and they’re done. But wait, maybe the Blues coach said those things on purpose to get the Blackhawks over confident?? NICE TRY!! We’ll settle this one ON THE ICE!! GO HAWKS!! – @marconibologna

Double Door, landlord heading to trial in eviction case

doorx2

(from redeyechicago.com)

Double Door and its landlord are heading to trial next month if they can’t work out whether the rock club will continue to occupy its Wicker Park space. (READ MORE HERE)

Double Door is currently paying $11,000 more per month and the building owner wants $33,976 a month. Since 1994 Double Door has been hosting shows in the space.

I personally want the Double Door to remain, but I’m no business owner and  can only imagine the costs of maintaining one in Wicker Park. Owning a building there you can most likely ask whatever price you want for rent. That said, I would much rather see more businesses like Double Door and local artisan restaurants fill the streets.

I don’t think driving a longtime established business out in pursuit of a tenant willing and able to pay nearly $34k a month is the only answer. It sounds like it comes down to the relationship between Double Door management and the building owner(s). Maybe they just don’t get along. I’ve had a few landlords that were less than great. Like the one that hated animals and insisted I pay a $200 monthly pet fee (from $40) when I went to renew my lease. VERCOCULOUS!!

$11k seems like a very high rent already but considering the space and the prime location I guess it’s normal (???) Raising the lease so dramatically however seems as though the building owner would much rather just have any tenant than the current one and my guess is if Double Door doesn’t continue there a future tenant won’t have to pay such a high price.

I feel the Double Door is a venue that we all love and want to stay. It’s unique to our city and a place we’ve been able to see an amazing amount of great music over the years. I hope everything turns out ok when all is said and done.  – @marconibologna
