VIDEO: Coachella 2016 performances from 101WKQX Artists

perform onstage during day 3 of the 2015 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival (Weekend 1) at the Empire Polo Club on April 12, 2015 in Indio, California.

Coachella is presenting it’s second weekend this year out in Indio, California with celebrities making appearances and people getting distracted by fashion, but the music is what it’s all about. Some alternative darlings made their dent in the fest and official performance videos were posted recently. This same festive good time will be ever present on June 18th at PIQNIQ, more on that here.Ā

The Arcs – ā€œOutta My Mindā€

This live version will this joyful backup singers makes the chorus really pop for Dan Auerbach and company. .

Meg Myers ā€œMotelā€

We had the absolute pleasure of having Meg perform an intimate private set in our Studio & earlier this year (watch that 36 minute set here) so to see bring that vibrant talent to the big tent with palm trees blowing behind her band.

Joywave -ā€Destructionā€

These Piqniq veterans bring a lush bottom end to this song with one of the funkiest bass lines in alternative right now. Singer Daniel Armbruster is proud of it, he proclaims on stage here that ā€œthis is the greatest song ever writtenā€….um he may be right about that. Also check out that solid gold microphone?!

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats ā€œOut on a Weekendā€

Rateliff and the Sweats delivered the goods at our recent No Dough Show at Basecamp. Not a single hip was without a shake and that same feeling continues here in California

Miike Snow ā€œGengis KLahnā€

This Swedish outfit will be a part of the Lolla ā€˜16 line up this summer, so take in their live performance of this balld of selfish lovers. The horns and back up singers give it a real presence that differs in a unique way from the recorded version.

Silversun Pickups ā€œCircadian Rhythm (Last Dance)ā€

It was worth staying up late to catch this set on a live stream. It was worth it to forget that I spilled snacks in my lap while singing along with this track of SSPU’s ā€˜Better Nature’ album. Despite the tech issue, Ā Nikki Monninger powered through a tech issue on her vocal, which shows these guys are just pros . ā€œFeel my body swoon, to hear you say my nameā€

Of Monsters & Men ā€œWolves Without Teethā€

OM&M have certainly become a force to be reckoned with. They previously performed on Coachella on a side stage but bring their Icelandic six-piece to the main stage here.

Joe Maddon amused by Busch Stadium ban on his T-shirts

jm

(fromĀ redeyechicago.com)

Cubs manager Joe Maddon actually sees a benefit to the banning of his ā€œTry Not To Suckā€ T-shirts at Busch Stadium. (READ MORE HERE)

Joe Maddon has the best attitude on pretty much everything. When I’m having a bad day I’m going to start asking myself WWJMD?? I know it’s an overused term but it’s true. He always seems to have the perfect reaction to negativity. Between him and Dave Grohl I think we might have the perfect human(s). GO CUBS GO!! – @marconibologna

‘Captain America: Civil War’ is getting great reviews

With the fallout of Batman v Superman settling in, superhero moviedom moves on to the big collision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: Civil War on May 6th. Now plenty of fans of Batman and Superman left the theaters expecting more from the anticipated DC super-clash, but the expectations of fans for the fight between Captain America and Iron Man is just asĀ high. So how is ā€˜Civil War’ doing in initial reviews?

Apparently, it’s going to deliver the goods. Rotten Tomatoes currently has the film at 96% of early reviews. Some critics are throwing some hefty praise on it in comparison to other comic book films of the past. ā€œ[T]he best Marvel yet, with the greatest superhero action on film. It’s immense, marvelous action-packed funā€ says Mark Hughes of Forbes. Ā So breathe a sigh of relief fanboy and fangirl, Tony and Scott are going to go at it and it’s most likely going to be beautiful.

Of course Cap and Iron Man are not the only the characters doing battle for the future of the Marvel world. This movie based off a huge all encompassing story from Marvel comics draws a line between heroes who choose to fall in with the government’s demand for oversight and those who choose to live independent of the government’s new regulations, so it’s bigger than just the two leads. This draws more costumed super powered people into the fray with the first appearances of the new Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) in a MCU film. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansen), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Vision (Paul Bethany), and Falcon (Anthony Makcie) all return on different sides of this fight as well.

Teaser: Ant-Man meets Captain America…and it’s awkward

Here is the latest Civil War trailer

Over on the printed page, another event series is going down with Civil War II. Here is a preview of that.Ā

And in other nerd news, Game of Thrones may have a spinoff show more on that here.

George R.R. Martin hints at possible ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff series

grrt

(fromĀ chicagotribune.com)

The sixth season of “Game of Thrones,” the hit television series based on George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” books, begins Sunday, but panicked fans are already dreading the show’s eventual end.Ā Yet in anĀ interview with Entertainment Weekly, Martin hinted that the end might notĀ really be the end for the HBO show.”There is certainly no lack of material” for a possible spinoff, Martin said.Ā (READ MORE HERE)

I can see it now. G double R Martin and his magical dragon. (searched for fan art on Tumblr and it doesn’t exist so I know it’s an original idea, I did however find the cool picture of George sitting on the throne).

grrtgot

George and his dragon Sanbrakhanical (dragon son of Daenerys Targaryen’sĀ dragons) are the main characters but each episode he arrives in a different town where he helps locals who desperately need his aged wisdom and wizard like powers all while his dragon fights and destroys anything and everything that gets in the way of those they have chosen to help. Only to mysteriously dissapear at the end of every episode as they fly off into the night heading to the next village to help others overcome the hurdles inĀ front of them. Ā I’d call it George and The Last Dragon Of Valyrian. Ā You’re welcome internet!! – @marconibologna

Is Conor McGregor Done?

Conor 1

Is Conor McGregor really done with UFC? Maybe. ā€Ž@TheNotoriousMMAĀ (Conor McGregor)Ā fired off a cryptic Tweet on Tuesday saying ”Ā I have decided to retire young.
Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya’s later.” He was also pulled from UFC 200 because Dana White says Conor refused to stop training in Iceland to travel to Vegas to promote the fight.

Obviously, this could some sort of stunt or a negotiation tactic, but McGregor was ringside April, 9th at a fight between his teammate Charlie Ward and Joao Carvalho. Sadly, Carvalho died shortly after due to injuries from the fight prompting Connor to write…

“Terrible news regarding Joao Carvalho.

To see a young man doing what he loves, competing for a chance at a better life, and then to have it taken away is truly heartbreaking.

We are just men and women doing something we love in the hope of a better life for ourselves and our families. Nobody involved in combat sports of any kind wants to see this. It is such a rare occurrence that I don’t know how to take this.

I was ringside supporting my teammate, and the fight was so back and forth, that I just can’t understand it.

My condolences go out to Joao’s family and his team. Their man was a hell of a fighter and will be sorely missed by all.

Combat sport is a crazy game and with the recent incident in boxing and now this in MMA, it is a sad time to be a fighter and a fight fan.

It is easy for those on the outside to criticise our way of living, but for the millions of people around the world who have had their lives, their health, their fitness and their mental strength all changed for the better through combat, this is truly a bitter pill to swallow. We have lost one of us.

I hope we remember Joao as a champion, who pursued his dream doing what he loved, and show him the eternal respect and admiration he deserves.

Rest in peace, Joao.”

So, it’s very possible that being so close to something like this caused him to reassess his line of work. Time will tell.

Riding A Divvy Is Safer Than Riding A Personal Bike

divvybikes

(fromĀ chicagoist.com)

Given the panic when Divvy first launched in 2013, you might have thought the city was taking the training wheels off droves of teetering wannabe bicyclists and unleashing them onto the streets. Videos confirming that clueless bike riders were wandering down Lake Shore Drive or onto the Dan Ryan didn’t help.Ā But here’s a shocking statistic: three years later, zero fatalities have been associated with bike sharing in Chicago. Typically five to eight cyclists a year die in Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune.Ā (READ MORE HERE)

No accidents have happened on Divvy because I haven’t been on one!! Seriously, Ā In the last 8 months I’ve almost broken my ankle misjudging a step at a CHVRCHES show last year. Then I dropped a flower vase on my foot in the middle of the night which almost paralyzed my whole entire left side for a day and then the night of the Jake Bugg show I face planted into the street into oncoming traffic in Wrigleyville. Accident prone much? And before you ask NO I WASN’T DRINKING!!…Okay maybe a few beverages, but still!! I like the Divvy bikes but I always feel as though they are more for friends visiting from out of town to try. If I wasn’t terrified of cycling in Chicago I would rent one. Maybe if they made a sweet bike trail in Grant Park where I wasn’t around other people or near the edge of the Chicago River or Lake Michigan ? Until then, I gotta go my train is here.. – @marconibologna
