PIQNIQ was amazing!! Here is an audio peek into the fun we had behind the scenes. Thank you for listening. We’ll be at Lollapalooza and Riot Fest too!! Plus an all new season coming early fall. – Marconi
A recap of PIQNIQ from my vantage with Garbage, The Lumineers, Young the Giant, Robert Delong, Lucius, Jr. Jr., Bear Hands, The Strumbellas, Broods and Beware of Darkness!
Francois from YTG has some serious BB skills, LeBron better watch out! :)~
Disclaimer: (it’s pretty obvious) this is my first time really editing video, so I hope you enjoy!
See you next year!! <3 @laurenoneil
Apparently MJ penned this poem for a girl back in grade school. Now, Darren Rovell is reporting that it’s going up for auction through Goldin Auctions. Pretty impressive penmanship for grade school, too.
Not ready to work yet? Don’t blame ya. Kill some time watching a watermelon become The Night King from Game of Thrones. Don’t worry. Monday will still be there when you’re done.
Thanks to everyone who came out to PIQNIQ Here’s a Crowd Album of great shots people grabbed at the show. Can’t wait for 2017!
Little note: I wrote this in 2016 the day before PIQNIQ when I was reflecting on PIQNIQ 2015, which is a day I deeply reflect on. So read on my reflective retrospective here….
So it’s the eve of a big day, tomorrow is Piqniq with an incredible line up that culminates months of anticipation in sun-kissed Tinley Park. It’s a huge concert event, but to me it’s more, a LOT more. Piqniq last year was special for me in many ways. In one day on the grandest scale, my childhood dreams came true on microphones but not any mics, microphones in special places.Tomorrow it’s not just a concert to me, it’s an anniversary of reaching the greatest day in my life so far.
Last year’s Piqniq was on June 6 2015 was my first day on air for 101WKQX and it was also the biggest rock concert of the year…and I could feel heartbeat like a drum every second.
I came into our former Merchandise Mart studios where 10 years earlier, I was an intern answering phones, pulling together research for DJ’s, and occasionally doing a silly voice. Back then I was one side of the desk, looking at the DJ’s, wishing I was one. To say entertaining thing before that song sends goosebumps down your arms or a smile across your face, that is where I wanted to be. Through so much trial and error (and then error again), I got the call to join the the on-air team after working away from the studio in the 101WKQX promotions department.
It took 10 years to walk into the Mart off the same train I took to Columbia College and White Sox games, to step inside the WKQX studio alone at midnight. To feel physically alone, but know that so many people listening was like being able to hold an 100,000 watt electric current in your hands. It felt like this was what I had spent my entire adult life working for. The first song I got introduced was Bleachers “Like a River Runs” which lyrically felt like poetic justice.
A few hours later, I was on stage at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater introducing Smallpools. It felt surreal to get a crowd to yell and holler before a band, when I remember seeing my first rock show at the same venue being this bright blue eyed kid yelling because he loved music. Well on 6/16, I loved it a LOT more.
PS: It was my birthday too.
When there is so much sad things in our world going on, we got to appreciate the positive things. Tomorrow is just that, appreciate the music, the bands, and all the work that goes into putting on such a fun show. Celebrate it. Don’t hold back a single shimmy or shake, DANCE!
Here is a very ridiculous interview I did the happiest band in alternative, The Mowglis. We ate a banana, that fell on the ground. That’s how good we felt, guys!
@kevkellam
Garbage’s new album Strange Little Birds came out on Friday and it is amazing!!
The song Sometimes is a stand out track for me, check out the video they just released:
This was filmed at a band rehearsal at East West Studios, I love the film effects it really adds to the creep vibe I get from this song.
Cannot WAIT to see Garbage at PIQNIQ tomorrow!!! Tickets and info HERE
See you there! <3 @laurenoneil
Could this be the end of the diabolical “bear?!” Yes. Yes it is.
If you missed it, Phantogram was on Fallon last night. They’ll hook up with Big Boi for Big Grams. Score your 4-day passes HERE.
I found a bag of Halloween candy today. June 16th, 2016.
230 days after it was collected on Halloween, 10/31/2015.
7 months and 17 days.
331,200 minutes. ish.
Is it okay to eat? We find out…

And here’s the rundown for the day…
I won’t even go up in the Skydeck at the Sears Tower. There’s no way I’m getting on this bridge regardless of how safe it is!! – @marconibologna
So we are almost there, like a roller coaster clicking up to it’s big drop off, we’re about to throw our collective hands up and yell ‘WOOOOOO!’ because PIQNIQ is this Saturday at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater! If you don’t have tickets yet, get them here.
Garbage who close out this year’s PIQNIQ lineup, made some headlines with the Daily Southtown this week. Guitarist Duke Erikson talked in-depth about their new album “Strange Little Birds” (out now), what it took to make the album, and how they add to follow a scary goth band in Europe.
One of the more revealing parts of Erikson’s chat with the Southtown was why Garbage took such an extensive break in the past. “One reason we took such a long break a while back was just being fed up with the whole system, the business side of things. It wore us down and we felt like we were trying to please people other than ourselves. We were not really feeling good about the hoops we had to jump through. Exhaustion was another reason we had to take a break. But now this is right for us, to do this on our own because we’re in total control. That’s very liberating and more fun.”
The article is also worth a read as you get some insight from our 101WKQX Program Director Troy about how the Piqniq lineup gels together and how this festival fits in with the summer concert season. Below you can check our Not Ready For Broadcast Podcast with Troy where he talks about the future of alternative music and where our fun little radio station fits into all that.

We’ve heard the rumors but it’s really happening. ‘Hey Arnold’ will return in a TV movie called ‘Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie’ with almost all the original voice actors returning except Arnold. With the original voice actor Lane Toran aging out of the role, child actor Mason Vellcotton who you may know as Bobby Draper on the AMC drama series ‘Mad Men’, will handle the ‘football’ headed duties. Toran will still be involved in some undisclosed way.
The two-hour movie set to debut in 2017, also promises to pick up where the show left off in 2004 and reveal what happened to Arnold’s parents. Craig Bartlett who created the series, will write the movie and be it’s executive producer.
If Nickolodeon is rebooting all their classic shows, does this mean get an R-rated update of ‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’? Whatever happens hold onto your containers of Gak, see what the original voice of Arnold looks like now in this video below. Spoiler: he’s supposedly a total hunk.

The ever-expanding entertainment empire of Disney grows into Asia today with the opening of the long-in-development Shanghai Disneyland. The amusement park and resort has been dubbed ” “the most technologically advanced Disney park yet.” by Disney CEO Bob Iger. This park should be everything it’s billed to be for it’s gigantic 5.5 billion dollar price tag. The park located near one of China’s largest cities has been in the works since 2001 and is Disney’s third park venture into Asia after Disneyland Hong Kong and Disneyland Tokyo. The motto of the park has been “Authentically Disney, Distinctly Chinese” and it really seems true as none of the ‘magic’ is lost in translation but it still wholly Chinese in it’s grand scale and language.
The park has been open to invite-only guests for a month now so the more than 10,000 employees (or ‘cast members’) could prepare for the wave of guests once the public gets past through it’s gates. This allowed for a lot of video footage of the park to come out, which you can see below. That TRON light cycle ride looks like the stuff of dreams, and Disney has been able to make really cool stuff from people’s dreams for their entire existence.
Shanghai Disneyland is laid out similar to Magical Kingdom and has it’s own version of several long-running attractions from the Orlando area park but with massive expansions, additions, and alterations. The Pirates of the Caribbean ride is now expanded into it’s own ‘land’ called Tresaure Cove. Rides and attractions featuring characters from Toy Story, Peter Pan, and other popular films in the Dis catalog.
Here is a point-of-view look at the impressive TRON light cycle ride which is one of the launch rides at Disneyland Shanghai. If you want more, simply scroll through the #shanghaidisneyland Twitter posts here from opening day.
Here is a Disney produced video about the making of the new mega-park.
If you like this happy fun adventure but want something a little darker and twisted, check out these videos from this abandoned amusement park that looks like a zombie Disney park.
