What Year is It?

Rangers

There is a new Blink-182 album, Pokemon is everywhere and here’s our first look at the new “Power Rangers!” Bryan Cranston, playing “Zordon” in the new movie, said we can expect it to be a little darker comparing it to the Christopher Nolan “Batman” series. The PR reboot will hit theatres in March of next year.

(from redeyechicago.com)

“Making a Murderer” is coming back to Netflix, the network announced Tuesday. The new installments will plop us back into the emotional roller coaster that is the post-conviction process, following convicted murderer Steven Avery and his nephew and co-defendant, Brendan Dassey, as their legal teams try to fight the system and challenge their convictions. I was just glad that the premise wasn’t Steven Avery as a new cast member on Orange Is the New Black.  – marconi

Michael J. Fox Plays with Coldplay

Coldplay

Coldplay showing some BTTF love during their stop in New York. It was pretty much the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance. They broke out “Earth Angle” and Johnny B. Goode” and even had Marty McFly himself on stage. Yup. Michael J. Fox.

Wonder if Chicago will get the BTTF treatment this weekend? You can still score your way into a private soundcheck party with the band HERE.

Nintendo made BILLIONS already off that game that everyone is playing

pikachu-it-prints-money1

Yes, that game that everyone is playing a.k.a the new supreme ruler of the world Pokemon Go has proven in less than two weeks since it’s release to be a huge money maker for Nintendo. Bloomberg reported the Japanese video game company had the biggest turnover on the Tokyo Stock Exchange trading  $4.5 Billion worth of stock on Friday. Overall it’s a 71% rise in one week.So does this mean that when Nintendo has it’s holiday party that Super Mario will be drinking in the corner, while everyone is talking to Pikachu and Squirrtle?

Nintendo is not the only company to benefit from this titanic move that has everyone trying to ‘catch them all’. Niantic, the mobile game developer behind the game and of course the Pokemon Company  will eventually reap the rewards of the PkGo mania. But the buck does not stop there, as many advantageous entrepreneurs have created businesses off the game as detailed by here Game Zebo.

We’ve been covering the Pokemon craze all week so whether your enjoying the game as a distraction from reality with ‘augmented reality’ or you just laugh at people walking into things with their face in their phone, check out these stories looking into the whole thing.

A SEINFELD VIDEO GAME!?

A SEINFELD VIDEO GAME?!

Australian game developer Jacob Janerka created these wonderful mock-ups of a potential game based on the greatest TV sitcom about nothing in particular, and they look better a fresh bowl of Crabs Bisk soup. Janerka who also made the online game Paradigm, apparently crafted this game-in-the-works to look like classic 90’s pont-and-click computer games. I wonder if you can double dip a chip or get into other classic situations Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer? It just looks really fun. Maybe this can save just a few lives from the all-consuming monster that is Pokemon Go at the moment.

Pokemon Go at The Bean!

Meet Up

Yesterday was a busy day in the city, not only did Chicago hold its annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, but it also held its first ever Pokemon Go meet up. You are probably wondering, where in the world did we hold this meet up and what do you do during one of these events that have taken over the world?

The Pokemon Go meet up was held yesterday at The Bean where there was a Facebook event page setup. At one point 12,000 people RSVP’d to the meet up to go around Chicago and catch as many Pokemon as possible. There is no official word on how many people actually showed up, but I think its safe to say not all 12,000 people showed up.

During one of these meet ups people go around the surrounding area in search of rare Pokemon that they can then catch and battle other Pokemon Goers with. Yesterday though at The Bean, the main purpose was to pin Pokemon against Pokemon in what they call a Pokemon Gym. Just think of it as a big boxing gym, except for Pokemon. The good news though is Chicago did something that no other meet up in the United States has been able to do before.

During the Chicago meet up at The Bean, there were so many people on the Pokemon Go servers at once, that they actually crashed it for the rest of the United States for a few minutes. During the meet up people were even dressing up as characters from the actually card game and TV show. Along with dressing up as characters, people were also gathering and sitting based on what team/house they are a part of in the game.

It’s safe to say that Pokemon Go has officially taken over the world and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I would fully expect there to be more Pokemon Go meet ups in the Chicago area very soon. If you were at the Chicago Pokemon Go meet up on Sunday, let us know how it went!

A near stampede in NYC due to that video game everyone is playing

Call it overkill, but a mobile game has taken over lives of millions in just over a week. Pokemon Go apparently caused a near stampede yesterday in New York City when a rare character in the game was sighted in Central Park. The video above posted on Facebook by a tour company that offers city tours for PkGo players (yes, that’s a real business now) shot the video and even they found the humor in all these people trying to ‘catch ’em all’. Players in the famous park heard someone call out ‘VAPOREAN!’ and it started a panic.

This is just another example of how big PkGO has become in such a short time, as it’s currently most popular mobile game across multiple platforms.

So if your not playing and just annoyed by all this, at least it makes for good people watching right?

Prepare to make a mixtape with Netflix

Netflix today added a feature this week to their life-consuming VOD service that you may think was already available but is not, until now. Sold simply as “Like a Mixtape for Netflix” , Flixtape is a new feature that allows you to title and assemble specific lists of shows to share with friends.

You could do a whole group of Holiday themed episodes of sitcoms or just the episodes of ‘Family Guy’ where Stewie and Brian go on an adventure. The possibilities are huge for Netfix fans to make a fun way to keep a certain mood or tone over a specific session of TV watching. A service that is already flexible to it’s user, is now able to modified even more by users.

There is several big changes coming to Netflix as well. As we reported in June, the company is flirting with the idea of letting users download their shows in some way in the future. And they scored a win recently that will upset a lot of ex-boyfriends or roommates you don’t live with anymore, when it was ruled in federal court that sharing your password was a ‘federal crime’.  So hang in there, the video on-demand world is a ‘changing.

And of course, Netflix will never stops it’s content shuffle of adding and dropping movies and TV shows. Fun news for comedy fans recently was the announcement that legendary writer and actor Albert Brooks will have his films on the Net very soon. This announcement video is worth the watch, especially if you enjoy dark humor.

CREEPY: Who is the Masked Bride?!

MASKED BRIDE

bride1

In Toronto a city famous for great comedy and being the site of Wrestlemania VI, now has another claim to fame. A mysterious ‘Maksed Bride’ is sitting in public spaces and leaving cryptic notes in public spaces. People have posted about seeing her all over the city, sitting with no interaction to anyone around her, and leaving crumbled notes at her feet. The notes are pretty out there with odd references to alt rock great Nick Cave and partial phrases in French. So hopefully she is not late for her wedding or maybe she missed her wedding…or is she running away from a wedding so she’s wearing a mask?! So many questions left unanswered.

Theories locally are running rampant. Some think it’s an elaborate performance art piece or a gorilla marketing campaign of some kind. Whatever it is, it’s weird and intriguing  for sure,

TV and Radio student Robert Wharry caught video of the Masked Bride when working on a project in the street. He has stated he is connected to the Bride in anyway, but felt compelled to film when he saw her randomly writing notes in downtown Toronto.

Our hearts are with the people of Nice

Our hearts go out to the victims of today’s attacks in Nice, France who suffered an apparent terror attack today which killed 80 people when a truck rammed into a crowd during the late hours of a Bastille Day celebration where many had gathered to watch fireworks. CNN reported the occupants of the truck then exchanged gunfire with police. Information about the situation is still coming out.

In these times we can collectively feel the need to reach out and help. You can donate to efforts with the French Red Cross here.  If you know someone who may be effected by this attack and need information, the U.S. State Department has a online resource here

In Paris tonight a large explosion near the Eiffel Tower occurred, yet is not terror-related according to local offiicials. That incident is being attributed to a malfunction with fireworks meant for Bastille Day celebrations. This attack in Nice occurred 8 months after an attack on a rock club in Paris where alternative band Eagles of Death Metal were performing.

Bastille Day is the French equivalent of our 4th of July. It is a celebration of the French people and their history as democratic country.
