Delightful Des Plaines Guy has made homemade horror movies for 25 years

FullSizeRender 2

Some movies are bad.Sometimes they are good, but sometimes it does not matter when the person behind them is simply so charismatic, whimiscal, and wonderfully weird.

Such is the case with Des Plainnes film maker David ‘the Rock’ Nelson. He’s made homemade horror movies like ‘the Devil Ant’ , ‘Miss Werewolf’ and ‘The Giant Horny Toad Monster’ on a cam corder since the 80’s.  Nelson gets the films out by duplicating them himself and mailing them out of his house. With production values that look like literal shoe strings holding up monsters and store bought costumes, he enthusiastically performs most of the parts himself. If you live next to him, seeing the Rock (No, not Dwayne Johnson) running around his yard in a mummy costumes is just another day but for him it’s another movie to make. Nelson who and has no problem mugging it up on camera occasionally for WGN Chanel 9 and promoting his madcap movies himself at various fan conventions. But his lovable off-the-wall personality is on full display in this June episode of ‘Outsider’ a documentary web series by VICE covering the minds behind the odd world of B-movies, watch it below.

The episode entitled “On the Road with the World’s Most Hyperactive Horror Director” does make it clear that going on a cross country trip with Nelson can be challenging, considering he never has an ‘off’ switch but you can’t deny the guy is a genuine character who shows it’s great to just be yourself.

Plus You got to love that Chicaaaaaaago accent. Congrats to the Rock on his success at legitimately making fun stuff for over 25 years.

New innovative bus that drives above traffic in China

autobus-chino-2

China may have us beat with mass transit innovations. Earlier this week, a 300 passenger 72 ft long ‘straddling bus’ that operates above traffic of smaller vehicles was tested. Just look at the lounge-like cabin, imagine a CTA bus like that? Are we looking at our transit future or we going to deal with more announcements like “[BING! BONG!] We are currently experiencing signal traffic ahead…” on our next Blue Line ride to O’Hare? These questions can only be answered with time. Kudos to the designers for this clever idea that could legitimately make life easier in packed cities around the world.

Facebook’s new anti-clickbait algorithm buries bogus headlines

fbnocb

(from techcrunch.com)

Facebook Pages and websites that frequently withhold, exaggerate or distort information in their link headlines will disappear from News Feed thanks to a new anti-clickbait algorithm that’s now rolling out.

Facebook manually classified tens of thousands of headlines with a clickbaitiness score to train the new algorithm. Now it can detect headlines like “When She Looked Under Her Couch And Saw THIS… I Was SHOCKED!”; “He Put Garlic In His Shoes And What Happens Next Is Hard To Believe”; or “The Dog Barked At The Deliveryman And His Reaction Was Priceless.”

Rather than just assigning a binary “Yes, clickbait” or “not clickbait,” each story gets a score about how egregious it is. The algorithm primarily looks for phrases often used in clickbait headlines but not in legitimate headlines, similar to email spam filters. (MORE HERE)

Thanks for checking out this article. I don’t understand FB algorithms. Maybe one day I will but I doubt it. Meanwhile, until then check out my vlog from behind the scenes at Lolla this year.

‘Star Wars’ live action TV series in the works

starwars.0.0

The Force will awaken in a whole new way if ABC has their way, when the TV network’s executive recently revealed that ABC is working on making a series based on Star Wars characters a reality at today at Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour in Beverly Hills, California. ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey responded to a question on if the network was interested in doing a series with the Star Wars property which is owned by ABC’s parent company Disney, she responded that their is ongoing talks to develop a show in the epic world which is still mega-popular in film and other mediums.

“The conversations with Lucas, we have had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming.” said Dungey according to EW.  She noted that there is no exact expected time frame to produce the series, and furthermore the show’s story will be kept under wraps until it airs. “That company exists under a big shroud of secrecy. If you feel Marvel’s secretive, [Lucasfilm] takes it to a whole other level … [Talks] are ongoing. We don’t have an official timeline yet.”

The challenge of making Star Wars live action show for TV is quite big, as fans expect a high level of production and special effects. This is not like other big sci-fi shows like Star Trek which got the beefed up when they made the jump from TV to Movies, so the potential SW series will need to sustain the magic. Plus you have to consider how these shows compliment or play into the stories of the new Star Wars films like ‘the Force Awakens’ and the upcoming prequel ‘Rogue One’.

Disney also owns Marvel and has already utilized Marvel characters for ‘Agents of S.H.E.I.LD’ and ‘Agent Carter’ as dramatic series. ‘Carter’ got cancelled but ‘Agents’ still continues with a fourth season coming soon. Meanwhile Marvel shows with interwoven stories on Netflix like ‘Luke Cage’, ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘Daredevil’ have seen success. When asked if ABC’s Marvel series would go the same route, Dungey responded  “ we have talked a little bit about that, yes.”

Here is an idea. Jedi Master Yoda in a hilarious sitcom where he opens up a yogurt shop with comedic results. Yeah, I know bad idea.
