The cost of buying everything in the 12 Days of Christmas this year? $16K.

The tradition of calculating how much one would spend on buying all the gifts outlined in the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” checked in for another year here in everyone’s faaaavorite, 2020 🙄.

Amongst other fluctuations in prices calculated by looking at the Consumer Price Index, one big noticeable savings in this pandemic is the screeching halt put on the performing arts. So while the inability to hire drummers, musicians, & dancers will save you, maybe you can throw some of that cash towards saving the independent Chicago venues that make up CIVL and help save THEM?

By the way, if you wanted to be true to the song and buy the 364 gifts listed in EVERY verse of the song — $105K.  If you’ve got that kind of money, adopt me.  — [eric]

Listen to Billie Eilish cover the Beatles

The Beatles have influenced generations of music beyond the perception of human imagination. There generations of music lovers born decades from now who will discover their work, and it appears alternative singing breakout Billie Eilish has found her preferred Beatles song. This cover of the George Harrison-penned song ‘Something’ was performed this week during a session with Sirius XM.

We had a memorably great time with Billie a few years back when she visited the LOUNGE for a session that featured ‘Ocean Eyes’, ‘Bellyache’ and ‘When the Party’s over’.

‘Late Late Breakfast’ livestream: Comedians fight silly challenges for the Hideout

For years before this current challenging year on Saturday afternoons, the Hideout would host the delightful comedy weirdo game show, the Late Late Breakfast which forced stand-up comics to perform in ever-increasing odd circumstances and silly games. Pies get thrown, they make the comics put on ridiculous costumes, and simply get out of the run-of-the-mill sex humor and regular delivery on stage. Imagine if you saw NFL players put through an obstacle course while also trying to play a game, that’s basically the idea of the gimmick.

With independent venues like the Hideout shuttered during the pandemic and their doors likely not opening until months into 2021, they have put on a series of special streaming events including today’s special event at 3 pm CST today with the Late Late Breakfast gang. The show will feature some big comedy stars like Kyle Kinane (the voice of Comedy Central), Tom Thakkar (TBS’s ‘Conan’), Clark Jones (HBO’s ‘Crashing’) social media darling Megan Stalter, and many more Chicago comedy cool people. You can buy the stream for $10 to support the Hideout during this trying time while aslo laughing your butt off at some content made right here in town. Get in on the party here.

Santa Claus and Stephen Colbert answer kid’s questions on ‘Late Show’

In his reoccurring segment where he answers kid’s questions, Late Show’s Stephen Colbert called upon a very surly Santa Claus who looks lot like Will Ferrell. The short bit was quite funny and it had an extra little bit of holiday weirdness with Santa smoking a candy cane-like it was a cigar. Santa shows up at the six-minute mark here.

No here is more funny stories of Satnas behaving badly.

Root root root for The Strokes!

The Strokes have released a new video for “The Adults Are Talking”.

Directed by Roman Coppola, the video finds The Strokes playing baseball against a team of future robots.

Watch it here:

The Strokes new album, The New Abnormal, is up for Best Rock Album at the Grammys this year.

The Most Popular Ice Cream Flavor of the Year Is . . . Yeah, Vanilla

With ALL the ice cream people have eaten at home this year, THIS is the best we could do?

Haagen-Dazs just released its four best-selling flavors of 2020.  And the most popular ice cream is . . . vanilla.

Chocolate didn’t even make the Top 5.  Sad trombone.

The rest of the top five are:  Coffee . . . strawberry . . . and butter pecan . . . and a bar of vanilla ice cream dipped in milk chocolate and covered with almonds.  (Red Tricycle)

Warner Brothers Movies Will Hit HBO Max the Same Day They Hit Theaters in 2021

Warner Brothers announced yesterday that all the movies on its 2021 release schedule will hit HBO Max the same day they hit theaters.  They’ll be available on the streaming service for no extra charge, but only for 31 days.

That’s 17 films in all, including “Godzilla vs. Kong”“The Matrix 4”“The Suicide Squad”“Dune”“Space Jam: A New Legacy”“Tom & Jerry”“Mortal Kombat”“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It”, and the “Sopranos” prequel, “The Many Saints of Newark”.

Warner Brothers said it’s trying to guarantee, quote, “as many movies as we could for the year for the global theatrical marketplace.”

They also don’t think it’ll hurt theater attendance because, quote, “We think where theaters are open, and consumers can go, that a lot of people will choose to go to the theater, especially for big movies.”

Still, theater chains were caught off guard, and AMC just entered negotiations with them.

Is this dating consultant too harsh?

Would you get mad at a dating consultant for being to real about your situation?

You did go to them for advice, so there has to be something to it right?

But this dating consultant really went in on this, seemingly nice, lady who wants to date a man who makes 6 figures.

What do you think? Was this too harsh or was it a little dose of reality?

Best and Worst Cities for Single People … Where does Chicago rank?

It’s been a weird and frustrating year for dating . . . maybe SO weird and frustrating that you’d be willing to uproot your life out of Chicago and move across the country to improve things.  And here’s how to do THAT :

WalletHub.com just released a study ranking the 182 biggest cities in the U.S. from the best place for single people to the worst.

The rankings are based on 32 different factors including the percentage of single people . . . the gender ratio . . . the number of people using online dating . . . and the cost of things like dinner, drinks, entertainment, and rent.

And because it’s 2020, they also included the state’s coronavirus restrictions in the calculation . . . the fewer the regulations, the better the score.  That’s right:  Less regulation equals more dating opportunities.  It’s a difficult time to be single.

Anyway, based on all of that, the five best cities for singles are:  Madison, Wisconsin . . . Atlanta . . . Denver . . . Salt Lake City . . . and Columbia, South Carolina.

And the five worst cities are:  Glendale, California . . . Brownsville, Texas . . . Pembroke Pines, Florida . . . Warwick, Rhode Island . . . and Laredo, Texas.  (WalletHub)

(Here are the full rankings of all 182 cities.)
