Q101 celebrates Mexican Independence Day

Q101 joins our friends & family from Mexico in celebrating Mexican Independence Day. This day precedes Cinco de Mayo, as priest Miguel Hidalgo called for Mexico’s freedom from Spanish rule on this day in 1810. The country freed themselves, thus, we celebrate their independence with food, family, and most importantly, by driving in caravans down the streets of Chicago.

¡Viva la independencia!

Scientists just invented painless tattoos

Tattoos used to mean that you were tough! If you can sit in a chair for hours with that pain, you’re a badass. But now, you don’t have to be. Scientists at Georgia Tech came up with permanent painless tattoos. Their version doesn’t use one needle, it uses thousands of microscopic ones on a patch, so small you can’t feel them. The needles aren’t even metal; they’re made of tattoo ink that’s strong enough to get through your skin then dissolves. So, are you brave enough to get one now?

Revolution Brewing and Garrett Popcorn have teamed up to create Caramel Beer

Two of your favorite things have no collided, Garrett’s Popcorn and Revolution Brewing. Caramel Crisp Caramel Popcorn Ale is a brown ale that is now available in Chicago and will be statewide by October 1st. Evolution uses 450 pounds of popcorn and 1,200 pounds of brown sugar for every 120 barrels of the 7 percent ABV beer. The brewery adds the caramel early on in the process so you really get a full caramel taste, and they throw in plenty of Kosher salt too, to make the popcorn flavors, ahh pop. If it goes well, it could be a staple every year around this time.

There’s a new bar in town at 360 Chicago, but the same stellar views, meet CloudBar!

Last night I stayed up WAY past my bedtime and visited the new CloudBar on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center. It’s all a part of the 360 Chicago experience. Your beloved Tilt is still there, the ride that allows you to tower 1,000 ft over Michigan Ave, terrifying yet, somehow fun. CloudBar is just a nice addition with signature cocktails, and fancy eats. It’s more than just a place to take your uncle when he visits. Now, it’s where you want to be with your girlfriends on a Friday getting happy hour. They’ll even have entertainment some nights, like local magician AJ Sacco. Sure, they’ve got the best views in the city, but they’ve got heart too. CloudBar, it’s not just for tourists anymore. Take a gander and a drink! -Ali

Riot Fest 101: The music of Douglass Park, with Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg

Class is in session. This is Riot Fest 101 — with Mark Ramone’s Blitzkrieg.

Time to see a Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Famer — Marky and the rest of the Ramones were inducted in 2002 and he continues to keep the spirit of the band alive with his Blitzkrieg.

Their setlists are chalk full of tunes from a group that earned “100 Greatest Artists Of All Time” status from Rolling Stone.

In 2016, Marky detailed what it was like to join up with the punk rock icons:

You can check out Mark Ramone’s Blitzkrieg Friday at 8PM on the Rebel Stage. Tickets are on sale for Riot Fest 2022 — you can also check out the lineup and complete schedules for all days.

The final sunset of 2022 after 7pm happens tonight!

Aug. 8th was the final sunset after 8pm, now, the final sunset of 2022 after 7pm is going to be tonight. Where did summer go?! We will lose nearly two minutes of daylight per day for the rest of the month and on September 27th, there will be fewer than 12 hours of daylight. Don’t worry, it won’t be until December 16th when the earliest sunset happens on the 16th at 4:22 pm.

Metra trains to run as scheduled today!

There was a possibility of a strike between union rail workers and railroad companies looming this week, so Metra cancelled 4 busy Chicago-area routes for tonight. However, an agreement was reached late last night to stop the the strike and continue service on all trains. Your commute will not be disrupted!

Metra’s post on the Facebook said, “We are greatly relieved that we will be able to continue to provide the safe and reliable service that you deserve and that you rely upon. Please accept our apologies for this week of uncertainty and anxiety, and our thanks for your patience and understanding. The late Thursday evening trains that had been canceled by BNSF and Union Pacific in anticipation of a strike will now run as scheduled”

Tow truck escorts alligator out of neighborhood

A HUGE 10 foot alligator was found in a neighborhood outside of Houston. It was so massive that they had to hire a tow truck to remove it! This happens about 35 times a year in surrounding suburbs when gators go looking for another water source.

San Francisco parking spot cost? As much as a luxury vehicle…

Real estate is out of control!

A cool $90K won’t even get you a PORTION of a condo in San Francisco — but it WILL get you a parking place in the building.

Lest you think the owner is gouging people — they only paid $5K less for the single parking spot when THEY bought it.

In the battle of the suburbs vs. city, we know which win column to put the checkmark in. ✔️

Riot Fest 101: The music of Douglass Park, with YUNGBLUD

Class is in session. This is Riot Fest 101 — with Yungblud.

This UK artist has been nominated in the past for NME’s “Best Solo Act In The World.” That seems like an easy title to live up to when you are a rising musician. 🙃

You’ve seen him on our Queued Up Artist Showcase and made a showing in the Q101 Lounge — even with a busted ankle.

Yungblud plays Saturday at 5:15 on the Roots Stage. Tickets are on sale for Riot Fest 2022 — you can also check out the lineup and complete schedules for all days.

A state run nursing home in Taiwan is under fire for hiring a stripper to entertainment some of the residents. Someone filmed it, put it on social media, and now it’s spreading like wildfire! The nursing home has since apologized, saying that they hired her to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. They said didn’t mean to offend anyone and will be more careful with hiring entertainment in the future. You can see the video of a grandpa having the time of his life below!
