5 THINGS TO GEEK OUT FOR WATCHING THE ‘STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE’ TRAILER

Here are the five most immediate things that got to me to freak out like milk was shooting out of my nose when I was watching the just-released final trailer for ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ due out on December 16th. This spin-off prequel is going to be huge, oh excuse me…um…it’s going to be YUUUGE. So let’s pile all our action figures together, feel the ‘Force’ and let’s nerd-out over this energizing teaser, shall we?

1.The reestablished excitement of seeing what leads to the story in the original Star Wars film in 1977 is just a grabbing premise. Yet we get the double-down creatively from the new Star Wars creative lords of also introducing new characters to let it become something alternative to the main stories in this world. It gives these characters credible depth for fans of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader while also allowing younger fans jumping in now to feel like they have some fresh faces they can related to in the ‘Force’.

2. Jyn Erso is going to be the new female heroine that inspires a lot of little girls and young women to geek out and get more into this universe. This character may even have more chances of earning love simply because she’s a leader of this team and appears to have less doubt of what she is meant to become, unlike Rey in ‘Force Awakens’ who needed to be prodded a little more into the Jedi she had to become. Now Jyn certainly has emotional connections to this mission (who is her dad? What is he doing with Death Star really?) and she is being put on this task by order of the Rebels, but she seems very full steam ahead in this trailer as compared the early teaser we first saw earlier this year. She reminds of the boss type character that alternative band Cake wrote about in the song ‘Short Skirt Long Jacket’ as we see Erso infiltrate the Death Star and pick up the slack.

3. The stakes are high here. This very early version of the Rebels needs to find out what this super-weapon is and how to stop it and prevent the tide from turning completely against them in the war against the Empire. This is a true prequel in the sense, that it understands where the story goes after this and what the consequences of this extended prologue has on the rest of the series. ‘You never know where you are going, unless you know where you’ve been before’ applies here, but it’s challenging to know where it’s going and try to tell us where it was before all started. That challenge appears to have been met in this trailer with a story that will deliver. The line that defines what is at stake in Rogue One: “Save the Rebellion. Save the dream.” Also can Forest Whitaker always play the wise grizzled vet in everything?! You buy that gritty passion from his acting in almost every role he’s been in.

4. The cinematography, art direction, and overall feel is spot on for a modern Star Wars movie. All these big sweeping shots that take you to these far away worlds feel tangible in seconds. The costumes have enough a soft ‘70s vibe but it’s still a space opera that we expect with robots and computer-generated ships. This is Disney, they don’t mess around engineering imagined epic ideas into something we can grasp with fanboy/fangirl glee.

5. The technology behind the Death Star could be presented in an engaging way here to remind us all how destructive it can be and lead to the Empire dominating the Star Wars universe. It has gravity to it, you know what it has done in the original trilogy. RIP Alderan!

This one is too obvious….DARTH VADER! One of the greatest villains in movie history is going to be a critical part of ‘Rogue One’ and that’s just got to be exciting for any Star Wars fan. For many, it might the complete selling point of the movie. Last year’s ‘The Force Awakens’ really made Vader this effective unseen ghost who is draped over everything in the story who motivated so much of the evil of Kylo Ren, but we never saw him on screen. Now we get to see a specific look at Vader as he grows into the mythic monster of the Empire who helped them become as powerful as possible without any of the prequel trilogy’s stigma attached to it.

Also it looks like it could be just a little bit better than ‘Force Awakens’ which should be yet another reason to go see this new adventure the day it hits theaters.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong stars in the upcoming film ‘Ordinary World’

16-billy-joe-armstong-ordinary-world-w1200-h630

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong is quite busy with his band releasing a new album Revolution Radio this past week, a North American tour (Sold out at Aragon on 10/23), and the recent reveal that his band’s definitive ‘American Idiot’ is being made into a HBO film, but still he has another project to enjoy. Armstrong stars in the independent film Ordinary World where he is not the influential and successful rockstar we’ve grown to know him as in real life, but rather a guy lost in his life, turning 40,and enduring his band’s ten-year long “hiatus” while being a miserable family man. Yep, Armstrong been bit by the acting bug, and he’s quite good at it! The trailer strikes you as a very real and humble alternate version of how life can be sometimes, not always what ideally want and how you deal with that. It gets a limited release in theaters this Friday.

Rolling Stone shared a clip (posted above) from the film, where Armstrong’s character does something foolish in front of rock icon Joan Jett.

The movie features Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live, Portlandia), Selma Blair (Hellboy) and Judy Greer (Archer, Arrested Development) plus new original music from Armstrong.

SNL continues to destroy with Election sketches & TWENTY ONE PILOTS!

Twenty-One Pilots delivered a violin-backed version of ‘Heathans’ on national TV with grand style that we’ve come to expect. Tyler’s red hat is just a fun look right?

The second performance of the night for TOP saw ‘Ride’ which is still in the Billboard Top 10 even though album it comes from ‘Blurryface’ was released 18 months ago. You simply can not stop this duo as they continue become a worldwide phenomenon.

Now the new cast for the 42nd season of Saturday Night Live continued to delivered a solid roasting to the current Presidential candidates in Donald Trump played by actor extraordinaire Alec Baldwin, the always fun Kate McKinnon delivers with Hillary Clinton, and new cast member Mikey Day effortlessly pulled off ‘America’s Dad’ and Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine.  Let’s forget in comedy like this you need good people to play straigh to set up the big laughter bombs, Cecily Strong a vet of 30 Rockefellar Plaza, provides the perfect support role. She also got a biting line on Trump’s most recent scandal saying that he “finally has a working microphone” in response to the Republican’s

Reunited and it feels so good. Best buddies Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon made an appearance as ‘Two Undecided Voters from suburban Philladelphia’ in Weekend Update (which also roasted Trump like he was a side of beef) along with the continually charismatic Pete Davidson making a plea to retain his youthful good looks. Jimmy Fallon loses his character’s Philadelphia accent here,

One of the more recent highlights in SNL has been the show’s pre-shot music video spoofs and this week’s jab at the awkward narcissism of high school theater geeks in ‘Crucible Cast Party’. If you ever tried out for your high school production a very dramatic play so that you could maybe have a stage kiss with the hottest person in your class, this is right up your alley.

Weezer team with comedian Patton Oswalt for “I Love the USA” video

“We are Weezer and we approve this message”

Alternative icons Weezer posted one of the best music videos of the year today with “I Love the USA”, a bonus track that is included on the deluxe edition of ‘the White Album’ which dropped on Friday. The video features an overzealous goof in American flag pants played by comedic treasure Patton Oswalt who stumbles into an empty Oval Office in the White House. Hilarity ensues over the track which itself is a humorous look at living in the USA. With the Election ’16 season being the non-stop hot topic of our collective lives, this should serve as a fun diversion to all of that. Beware, some naughty words are in this video.

WEEZER plays Night 1 of The Nights We Stole Christmas at the Aragon on Friday December 1st with Phantogram and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. Get your tickets here and  enter to win tickets for all 3 nights of #TNWSC with Cage the Elephant, Catfish & the Bottlemen, Fitz & the Tantrums, Grouplove, and Switchfoot at 101WKQX.COM/STOLE

Go Go Power Rangers! First teaser for the new movie is out

pr-final2

Their a rag tag crew of misguided teenagers who gain super-powers, it’s a grittier darker and slightly adult remake of the Power Rangers that we are getting in theaters in March 2017 based this trailer uploaded this weekend by Lionsgate Films. The edginess added to Power Rangers was clear when we first got pics of the Iron Man-like costumes and it was revealed that Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston would appear in the film as the voice of Zordon, the alien mentor to the Rangers. @kevkellam
