IN THE MID-20TH century, when the LP was the medium of choice, massive hydraulic-powered vinyl pressing machines—manufactured by long-forgotten companies like SMT, Lened, and Toolex—pumped out the endless stream of grooved discs that became the lifeblood of the booming post-war music industry. When CDs emerged in the mid-1980s, most of those aging LP presses ended up in landfills and warehouses. The rest of the plot unspools like a stale Wes Anderson ensemble. Fueled by millennials feeling nostalgic for something they never experienced, vinyl enjoyed a stunning revival and, defying all pundit predictions, became more than a passing format fad. I love listening to vinyl, and my cat does too. She mostly just likes to jump on the turntable and go for a merry go ride. I must admit I get a little jealous. IT LOOKS LIKE FUN!! Though it doesn’t create a pleasant listening experience. I’m not worried that she’ll leave me for a club DJ career anytime soon.

No longer will we have to brave a trafficky L desert to see the Bulls, Blackhawks, Twenty One Pilots or the Game of Thrones orchestra. The CTA is slated to announce a new L station at United Center on Thursday, according to reports. The Green Line station is slated for Damen and Lake, less than two blocks north of United Center, and is scheduled to open in 2020. Construction on the station will start in the latter half of 2018.The city will pay for it with roughly $50 million in Tax Increment Funding (TIF). (MORE HERE)

The co-owners of Double Door said they will carry through their appeal and maintain their right to further potential legal claims against the landlord after the legendary club was evicted from its longtime Wicker Park location on Monday. Co-owner Sean Mulroney said Double Door had three times given Brian Strauss, the landlord of the property, at 1572 N. Milwaukee Ave, rent payments for January and February, but Strauss “refused to accept” them. “In the interest of protecting both employees and performers at Double Door, we attempted to craft a deal to guarantee our residency through June of 2017,” Mulroney said in a statement.

In 2012, designer John Collins constructed a paper airplane that flew an astonishing 226 feet, establishing a distance record that still stands. A new video demonstrates the steps required to fold your own version of this record-setting paper-based aircraft. Collins recently visited Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, where he talked to students about making paper planes, explaining the importance of having the right materials and design. “If you can wad up a piece of paper and throw it farther than your paper airplane, your plane sucks,” he told the class. Needless to say, building the “perfect” paper airplane isn’t a matter of luck. As Collins told the students, factors that need to be considered include glide ratios, center of gravity, center of lift, the boundary layer, and the Magnus effect. Drawing on his experience with origami, he demonstrated how additional folds at the right spot can shift the center of gravity and make the plane fly better, and how a slight adjustment of the wing’s trailing edge can prevent it from nosediving.
