Schaller’s Pump, Oldest Bar in Chicago closes

The oldest operation bar in Chicago has closed it’s doors. Schaller’s Pump which has been in operation since 1881, closed up according a report published yesterday by the Sun Times. The Bridgeport staple was ran by the Scahller family for it’s entire run holds Chicago’s liquor license No. 6. It endured multiple wars, economic strife, and even Prohibition but it closed it’s doors for good this weekend.

If you are a Chicago White Sox, you likely pre or post gamed at this cozy brick and wood saloon which your dad or unlce told you to go to. I drank there more than a few times, putitng a beer down fast so I could get to my seat in bleachers before the first pitch. This is truly a sad day to lose a beloved Southside gem that has been a part of living and working in the city.

Check out these great reflections of this multi-generational family owned business. It’s really heartwarming to hear Kim Schaller talked about the local luminaries frequenting the bar, the Sox bringing in the World Series trophy into the bar, and the stories that have been shared at one of the greatest bars in Chicago history.

Riot Fest Wants Your Help Paying Loving Tribute John Stamos

(from chicagoist.com)

Even the most casual follower of Riot Fest’s Twitter feed knows that the festival has long had an obsession with actor and musician John Stamos. In 2013 the festival proved their devotion by featuring a life-sized butter Stamos bust on the grounds that year, and the exhibit was hugely popular. We know. It was almost impossible to get a decent picture of the thing with so many people gawking at it. (MORE HERE)

Chicago’s Second Boozy Taco Bell Will Hit The Loop

(from chicagoist.com)

Taco Bell is expanding on its boozy concept and bringing a second Chicago location of Taco Bell Cantina to the Loop. Eater reports that the second location will be coming to 407 S. Dearborn St. There’s no word yet on exactly when it might open. Taco Bell Cantina opened its first location in the country in Wicker Park in 2015, followed by other locations in Las Vegas, Austin, San Francisco and Newport Beach. It serves beer, too-cold wine and boozy slushies and a special “tapas” menu alongside classics, like gorditas and Doritos Locos tacos. (MORE HERE)

Their drinks are really good. I’m excited that this new location will be right around the corner from Harold Washington Library. Get boozy and go read some books!!

90’s sitcom hit ‘Roseanne’ set for reboot

90’s sitcom hit ‘Roseanne’ set for reboot with stars Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, and other central actors returning according to a story broken today by Deadline. This follows the trend of TV reboots with ‘Full House’ on Netflix and the upcoming NBC return of ‘Will & Grace’. The ‘Roseanne’ series is reported to have 8-epsiode production schedule with the show’s original home ABC and Netflix looking at taking on the modern take of the realistic family comedy that ran from 1988 to 1997.

Though the show had a strong overall run, the finale (or now, the original finale..ugh) left a lot of open ended questions and did not reel all in the emotions of being attached the characters who had earlier in the final season become multi-millionaires. The final episode felt really underwhelming for fans who stayed with the series through nine seasons. Watch Mojo runs down the top 10 most dissappointing finale episodes in TV and ‘Roseanne’ makes the list. SPOILERS!

The Strangest Song Blink 182 Has Ever Recorded

Blink-182 just tweeted another new song from their upcoming deluxe edition of California. They say it’s the “strangest song (they’ve) ever recorded.” Titled “6/8” because of its time signature and one of their favorites because it’s aggressive.  I think it is my new favorite:

The deluxe edition of California, featuring 11 brand new songs and an acoustic version of “Bored To Death”, available everywhere on May 19, 2017!

Pre-order now & receive an instant download of “Parking Lot”, “Misery”, “Can’t Get You More Pregnant” and “6/8”.

Dave Grohl’s Mom Embarrasses Son On National T.V.

In Sunday’s Bits/Bytes, I mentioned Dave Grohl’s mother releasing a book on not only what it was like raising her rock star, but interviews other moms about their experiences as well.

Dave & Virginia Grohl were on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night.  Besides learning that Virginia is comfortable enough on the road to have beers with Green Day, she also brought some embarrassing artifacts with her as well, including a report card from the 6th grade filled with “unsatisfactory” and “needs improvement” marks.  Watch for yourself:

As Chicago’s Flag Turns 100, Be Glad We Don’t Have Something Else

Over a century ago, Chicago put out a contest for something to symbolize the growing city.  On April 4th, 1917 — the City Council of Chicago brought that contest to an end by adopting the flag that we know and love today.  I say this because — its everywhere.  Logos (including ours), buildings, art — even people.

Of course, the version back then only had two of the four stars.   And OF COURSE, the guy who wrote the rules for the contest ended up being the winner of the contest.  Say what you will about Chicago politics, it is consistent.

As we celebrate 100 years this month, lets celebrate our flag by pointing/laughing at the misfortune of other city’s symbols:

TAMPA, FLORIDA

“Hmmm.  It’s STILL TOO PLAIN.  And since we’re trying to confuse the eye, go ahead and make it a shape NO ONE HAS SEEN BEFORE.”

RENO, NEVADA

“Imagine being whisked away to….Reno.  Hi.  I’m in Reno.”

POCATELLO, ID

“The flag that time forgot.  At least, since 1992.”

GRAND RAPIDS, MI

“It looks like Ms. Pacman is blitzed and tried to put her lipstick on whilst traversing a bumpy street.”

KVALSUND, NORWAY

“Into polyamorous fish?  We’re the HOME of polyamorous fish.”

Enjoy these others, if you will.  And enjoy what we have here in Chicago. — [eric]

‘Logan Square’ Pizza & The Late Night Food Scene In Chicago

(from chicagoist.com)

We may have found the best pizza is in Logan Square. We know, there’s Dante’s and Reno, Boiler Room and Father & Son… but bear with us—Paulie Gee’s, the Brooklyn chain that opened up on Milwaukee Avenue last year, is serving up Detroit-style pizza squares that are simultaneously the fluffiest and crispiest we’ve ever had. (MORE HERE)

I always enjoy when someone finds a new way to create pizza deliciousness. I still wish that someone would take on the late night food near bar situation in Chicago. Wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to walk across the street before you call it a night and get a slice of pizza before heading home? In Chicago we have bars that stay open until 4 and 5 AM but almost none of them serve food late or are even near any all night food establishments. Sure there are a handful of eateries that have late night hours but they are few and far between. Am I off here? In some states it is a law that all bars have to serve food. In Chicago you usually have to go to a restaurant bar for anything beyond a pretzel. Most restaurants are closed by 10 PM.  All I’m saying IS maybe there’s a way two business could partner. Say for example ‘MARCONI’S TAVERN’ now serving PAULIE GEE’S PIZZA. It’s just an idea. Or maybe I’m threatening to start a PIZZA TAVERN!! What’ya say Paulie Gee’s?

Artificial Womb Successfully Grew Baby Sheep

(from the verge.com)

Inside what look like oversized ziplock bags strewn with tubes of blood and fluid, eight fetal lambs continued to develop — much like they would have inside their mothers. Over four weeks, their lungs and brains grew, they sprouted wool, opened their eyes, wriggled around, and learned to swallow, according to a new study that takes the first step toward an artificial womb. One day, this device could help to bring premature human babies to term outside the uterus — but right now, it has only been tested on sheep. (MORE HERE)
