The City Is Offering Free Bike Riding Classes To Adults This Summer

The city is going to be offering free bicycling classes to adults this summer, in parks on the South and West sides of the city.

The classes are taught by the Bike Ambassadors program and are courtesy of the city’s Department of Transportation, the Divvy bike share program and its sponsor, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, and Divvy is providing bikes meaning you can come learn how to ride even if you don’t have a bike.

Transportation officials said in a press release that the classes would be good for people who have never ridden before or have taken anywhere from a couple years to a couple decades off. They also noted that it makes sense for the city to offer classes to novice riders in tandem with its effort to expand bike sharing and other bike resources and infrastructure around the city—it’s all with the goal of making it easier for people to choose to ride rather than drive. Yeah, Yeah….Tornado. This Lawn Isn’t Going to Cut Itself, Though…

This is the picture of the year.  I care not that there is still more than half of it to go.  The contest is now officially over.

A Canadian woman snapped this picture to show her South African parents what a tornado is all about.  What she didn’t realize was how much fun the internet would have with her husband calmly and collectively mowing the lawn in front of the storm that touched down near Alberta on Friday.

Which version of the story do you want to hear?  That he was frantically trying to get his yard work in before the storm hit, like a BOSS?  Or that the picture doesn’t truly tell how close it is or what direction the storm was moving?

I know the one I’ll be telling.  And it already sounds AWESOME in my head.  — [eric]

VIDEO: Trailer Here for the Green Day Produced Documentary On Punk

Green Day launched from the East Bay Punk scene…along with acts like Rancid, AFI…which marked a shift towards inclusion and fun in the genre.  You may have heard the band is producing Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk.  Now you can check out the trailer for the documentary.  It is in select theaters as of June 2nd (narrated by the godfather himself…Iggy Pop).  I’ll keep you posted on alternate means of viewing.  — [eric]

VIDEO: Was Family Guy Meant to be a kids’ Show?

Family Guy is still one of the hardest hitting comedies on TV with off color humor that would never be considered children’s entertainment, but this retrospective video from Channel Awesome looks at creator Seth MacFarlane’s first shots at animated shows and how they influenced his big hit series. If you are a fan of 90’s Cartoon Network, you will see how the risque comedy of Family Guy is rooted in a short pilot that was featured on ‘What A Cartoon’, a show that featured shorts that would grow into their own individual series. ‘Powerpuff Girls’ and ‘Johnny Bravo’ all got their start on ‘What a Cartoon’ but MacFarlane’s ‘Larry & Steve’ never got called up for it’s own show.

A map of the hardest word for each state to spell?

(from cbsnews.com)

As the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee gets underway, Google has decided to honor the annual event by compiling a list of the most misspelled words in the country.

Their list is based on top searched “how to spell” words by state in 2017, and is categorized by how many letters in each word were misspelled. Apparently, folks in Georgia had a tough time spelling “gray” while residents of Wisconsin had problems spelling their own state. Illinois had trouble with appreciate. I personally have trouble with millenniumrhythmaccommodate and SOOO many more. Any of the words on this list difficult for you?

Some of the top misspelled words include:

  • Supercali…
  • Maintenance
  • Diamond
  • Beautiful
  • Surprise
  • Banana
  • Available
  • Sense
  • College
  • Disease
  • Quote
  • Delicious
  • Tomorrow
  • License
  • Angel

See how each state ranks in comparison to ours, take a look at Google’s map. (MORE HERE)

Bleachers’ Concept Album, Full Of Fist-Pumps & Feelings

(from chicagoist.com)

Jack Antonoff has come a long way from fronting the relatively scrappy Steel Train, then updating that band’s melodic instincts with the more straightforward pop hooks of fun. When he finally struck off on his own to form Bleachers, the resulting sound made total sense; steeped in the ‘80s, emotionally straightforward, and not at all subtle. Admittedly, Antonoff can be so emotive and over the top at places it could play as parody, but you just can’t shake the fact he means it. You believe it, and you fall into his thrall. (MORE HERE)

Jack was great at PIQNIQ.  Watch highlights of his backstage performance below

You might know this song from hearing it on the air on 101WKQX. Jack wrote it about his girlfriend Lena Dunham
