Legendary Horror Director George A. Romero Has Died

Legendary horror movie director GEORGE A. ROMERO died in his sleep yesterday . . . after a, quote, “brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer.” He was 77.

He reportedly passed while listening to the score of “The Quiet Man” from 1952, which was one of his favorite movies. He was surrounded by family.

George was most famous for his zombie apocalypse movies . . . beginning with Night of the Living Dead in 1968. He also did “Dawn of the Dead” in ’78, “Day of the Dead” in ’85, and later “Land of the Dead”“Diary of the Dead”, and “Survival of the Dead”.

Some of his other movies include: “The Crazies” in 1973, “Martin” in 1978, “Creepshow” in 1982, “Monkey Shines” in 1988, and “The Dark Half” in 1993.

Director Eli Roth Tweeted, quote, “It’s hard to quantify how much he inspired me and what he did for cinema . . . he used genre to confront racism 50 years ago. He always had diverse casts, with Duane Jones as the heroic star of ‘Night of the Living Dead’.

“You can trace a direct line from ‘Night of the Living Dead’ to ‘Get Out’. And . . . Romero CREATED the modern zombie. The infectious bite . . . shoot the head . . . everything.”

HBO Now Crashed And ‘Game Of Thrones’ Fans Reacted Like It Was The Red Wedding All Over Again

The only thing more terrible than having your family massacred during your eldest son’s wedding in a double cross that would send ripples throughout Westeros would be having HBO Now stuck on the buffering screen during the Game of Thrones season seven premiere. Unfortunately for some, they lived out this horror, clicking and refreshing like mad, hoping the little bar would fill and they would be thrust back into the dark and magical world full of dragons and Ed Sheeran.

Yes, HBO Now was down for almost half of the Game of Thrones east coast premiere, but it righted itself in the second half and fans got caught back up. A spokesperson said HBO Go was also down for a time in Latin America, but HBO Go was working almost flawlessly in the States. READ MORE

Disney’s live-action Aladdin finds it’s cast

Disney has had a busy week with their D23 Expo this week rolling out teasers for upcoming Pixar movies and showing off models of the upcoming Star Wars Land theme park, but 90’s kids may freak out over the news this week of the cast for the upcoming live-action version of the animated classic ‘Aladdin’. Yes, it will be a whole new world with several new young actors scoring big parts with some blockbusters heavyweights in supporting roles. Yes, I had to get the ‘whole new world’ pun in there, what do you expect?

“Aladdin will be played by a young actor named Mena Massoud,” Walt Disney Studios production president Sean Bailey announced at the D23 Expo on Saturday. “Jasmine will be played by Naomi Scott.”Massoud currently can be in seen Amazon’s ‘Jack Ryan’ series, he is from Canada but was born in Egypt. Playing Naomi Scott already has experience stepping into a film with established expectations, as she was one of the Power Rangers in the recent big screen reboot.

The biggest name in the cast is Will Smith as the Genie, who has a proven record of hits in the past but has had a recent series of flops most notably the dud that was 2013’s ‘After Earth’. Hopping into a Disney project that will have a walk-up audience is a soft home run for the former ‘Fresh Prince of Bell-Air’. Still it’s not easy to fill the shoes of the late great Robin Williams, but you can’t deny Smith has a larger-than-life personality to deliver for this over-the-top role.

Oh that’s not enough Aladdin news, check out this interview from WCIU with the cast of the Broadway musical version which is currently running in Chicaogo.

Gross Slime Eels spill out in the most disgusting traffic jam

Hope you don’t read this while eating. Thousands of slime eels spilled from a truck during an accident on an Oregon highway this week, causing the most disgusting fender bender of all time. Aproximately 7.500 pounds of these slippery sick eels wiggled out onto the road while a truck delivering them hit their brakes causing a 4-car pileup. The truck tipped over sending the eels out onto cars and the road causing a traffic jam.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) said slime eels, formally known as hagfish, create mucous from glands along each side of their body when they feel threatened. What do they do when they are excited? I don’t want to know, why did I ask that?! Also how is the informal name ‘slime eel’ better than their real name ‘hagfish’? Question I don’t want answered but I am still asking.

“[They] are a primitive jawless fish similar to lamprey that are plentiful off the Oregon coast and considered a delicacy in Korea and China — though we guess these might not taste too good anymore,” the ODFW said in a statement from ODFW.

Use your skills to decode magic spells

“Interested in dabbling in 17th-century witchcraft in your spare time? The Newberry Library in Chicago could use your help to transcribe three books dealing with spells and witches that date back to the 1600s.”

A detail from The Book of Magical Charms, one of the manuscripts the Newberry Library is seeking to transcribe.

“Several portions have already been decoded, like a section on activating a magic seal (“write in virgin parchment the blood of a lamb”) and tips for conjuring (“work should be with a crescent moon”). Once transcriptions have been written and reviewed by the library, they will be added to the institution’s digital collection.”

“The manuscripts, titled The Book of Magical Charms, The Commonplace Book and Cases of Conscience Concerning Witchcraft will be featured in a September 2017 exhibition alongside more than 150 items including Bibles, poems, maps, music and art. The project also takes place on the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, a religious doctrine that eventually ignited the Protestant Reformation.”

Anyone can visit the online “Transcribing Faith” portal for the project in order to transcribe and translate the texts without having to visit the library.
