Today is a hard day. To wake up and read the tragic news that 58 people lost their lives at a country music festival in Las Vegas, and now in the last few hours we learn that rock legend Tom Petty suffered a heart attack. There has been conflicting reports as to whether or not Petty has died, but TMZ has reported that the musician is “clinging to life”.
Petty who came to prominence in the 70’s with the Heartbreakers, has influenced multiple generations of alternative bands with the most notable being the Foo Fighters. Petty’s sincere embrace of rock with emotion and conviction is something you can see with Dave Grohl and his band which is why the Foos have utilized Petty’s groovy long jam ‘Breakdown’ to loosen up their marathon shows over the years.
There was kinship between the Foos and Heartbreakers over the years. In February, Tom Petty was honored at the annual MusicCares event in Los Angeles, where Grohl contributed to an all-star tribute to the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. In July, the Foo Fighters along with Petty and the Heartbreakers headlined the BottleRock festival together in Napa Valley, California. Grohl has jammed on stage with Petty on a couple of noteworthy occasions as well. In 2007, the former Nirvana drummer joined the Hearbreakers to close out the AmsterJam festival In New York.
Grohl helped out the Heartbreakers to fill-in on drums during a ‘Saturday Night Live’ performance in 1994. It was one of the first big shows for Grohl following the abrupt and sad end of Nirvana withe singer/guitarists Kurt Cobain passing away just seven months earlier. Here is Dave sitting in with the Heartbreakers for the head-bobbing track ‘HoneyBee’.
Here is a fan shot video of the Foo Fighters performing the 1976 hit from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers self-titled album. This video was shot during the 2011 ‘Wasting Light’ tour.
The Killers have scored their first number 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart this week with their new release ‘Wonderful Wonderful’ which sold 111,000 copies. The album was released on September 22nd, and got boosted sales with it being bundled with ticket sales to the band’s upcoming tour. It’s surprising in retrospect to look back and see that this is there first number 1 album. Brandon Flowers and company came close to this prestigious status before with ‘Sam’s Town’ in 2006 which came in at number 2. The tease of the top spot alluded the Killers again in 2012 with ‘Battleborn’ coming in at Number 3. The Nevada based band has been on the national level since their debut smash ‘Hot Fuss’ and sustained a spot at the top of the alternative music mountain ever since.
‘Wonderful Wonderful’ has been well-received by fans, with two roaring jams ‘The Man’ and ‘Run For Cover’ garnering tons of views on YouTube. The first time I heard ‘the Man’ I was immedately strutting around like I was the guy in the song. Oh, come on you don’t do that when no one is looking?
It’s refreshing to see one of alt bands at the top of the charts, rubbing elbows with pop artists like Ed Sheeran.

It was a surprise viral hit for ‘Saturday Night Live’ so NBC is tapping the odd yet beloved David S. Pumpkins for an animated Halloween special to air on October 28th at 10:30PM CST. ‘The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special’ will feature Tom Hanks providing the voice for the pumpkin-suited weirdo while SNL vets Bobby Moynihan, and Streeter Seidell join in with ‘Game of Thrones’ star Peter Dinklage. According to Splisider, the special will focus on David S. Pumpkins “and his skeleton sidekicks who show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way.”
SNL just started it’s 43rd season after taking in some Emmy Awards last month, following the highly-rated recent season that roasted the 2016 Presidential Election and President Trump. The comedy institution has also added some Chicago comedy talent to the cast, more on that here.
So expect it to be very out-there and deranged with no explanation just like the 2016 sketch that inspired it all.

Last night there was a shooting at Route 91 Harvest (a 3-day country country festival) on the Las Vegas Strip.
Someone shot into a crowd of 30,000 people at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas near the Mandalay Bay casino last night. It happened just after 10:00 p.m. local time.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have confirmed 58 people are dead, and there were more than 515 wounded, which makes it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. These figures have been updated through Las Vegas area officials in a briefing today.
Jason Aldean was performing when his set was interrupted by the sound of automated gunfire and he ran off the stage.
There were several long bursts of gunfire, with long pauses in between while the shooter was reloading. The shots came from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay. The SWAT team had to use explosives to breach the room and take him out.
The suspect was killed by that SWAT team. He was a 64-year-old local resident.
The cops arem looking for his female companion last night. She has been reached while outside of the country.
Jason Aldean posted a statement to confirm he’s okay. Quote, “Tonight has been beyond horrific. I still don’t know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that Me and my Crew are safe.
“My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night. #heartbroken #stopthehate”‘
The Cubs wrapped up the regular season today at Wrigley Field with a 3-1 loss to Cincinnati. But, it didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things…they had already earned their way into their third consecutive post-season days before.

Last night while performing at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, Marilyn Manson was forced to end his set early after a large stage prop fell on top of him during his performance. The singer was quickly aided out from underneath the prop by stage hands, and after a brief delay the show was ended. You can see the entire incident in the above fan-shot video as Manson and his band perform ‘Sweet Dreams’ an hour into their set.
Other videos online appear to show Manson trying to possibly climb on to the prop, before it toppled over on top of him.
“Manson suffered an injury towards the end of his incredible NYC show. He is being treated at a local hospital,” said a rep for Manson in a statement to Rolling Stone.
It is unclear how severe Manson’s injuries are at this time but to those in attendance at the show last night the situation appeared to be serious for the singer who was touring in anticipation of his upcoming album, ‘Heaven Upside Down’. “There was a lot of confusion in the crowd when it happened, people thought it was maybe part of the act,” says Loudwire’s John Hill, who was at the show. “When the guitarist moved over, the crowd started to freak out. Everyone was really worried and then chants started. They had the crowd move out of the venue real quick.”

This is not the first time this week the shock rocker has been endured some bodily harm on stage. Earlier this week while on the first leg of his current tour in Pittsburgh, Manson announced to the crowd that he had broken his ankle after taking a tumble off stage.
At last night’s show in New York City, Marilyn Manson climbed up a “two-gun” prop. It did not end well. The set fell on top of the singer, who was down on the stage for about fifteen minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. Reports say that he suffered an undisclosed injury and was being treated at a local hospital.
While no official word has been given, band mate Tyler Bates said he was “headed home” in a Instagram-captioned photo of an airplane…and that the tour was “on pause for a minute.” — [eric]

Danny Trevathan has been suspended 2 games for a violation of @NFL player safety rules pic.twitter.com/gxFjYYU1EU
— Michael Signora (@NFLfootballinfo) September 30, 2017
In Thursday’s rivalry game between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bear, Packers player Davante Adams was injured after a nasty hit by the Bear’s Danny Trevathan. The hit was brutal to see in a slow-mo replay with Adam’s helmet jarring back and his mouth-piece flying out of his mouth. Today the NFL responded with a 2-game suspension on Trevathan.
The league said that Trevathan violated Rule 12, Section 2, Article 6 (i) which states that “there shall be no unnecessary roughness. This shall include, but will not be limited to: (i) using any part of a player’s helmet or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily.” – nfl.com
If Trevathan doesn’t have a successful appeal, he will be available for the Bear’s October 16th game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Trevathan expressed care for Adams in a post-game interview on Thursday, noting his intention was not to injure Adams.
Let’s go ‘around the horn’ with various sports new coverage of this story.
On October 13th, William Patrick Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins will release a new solo album produced by Rick Rubin, titled ‘Ogilala’ and it will soundtrack the silent film ‘Pillbox’. That all plays together for this fresh music video from the Chicago alternative vet who delivers a dreamy acoustic ballad with candy-cotton sweet ambiance that plays into a “ a hero’s journey.” It’s quite trippy and surreal in the best way. It reminded me of the fantasy film ‘ The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’.
‘PillBox’ will be screened in limited release, including a special event at the Music Box Theater on October 11th with Corgan and the film’s director Linda Strawberry on hand.
