“Dance Monkey,” but just Tones & I and her piano.

Tones & I is the stage name of a person, not a band name in case you weren’t aware.  That person is an Australian named Toni Watson, whose unique voice on “Dance, Monkey” has been climbing the charts around the world.  I came across this stripped down version of the song — just a musician and her piano and was pretty amazed.  Kudos to her for sharing — and kudos to the camera person on this, who is still probably dizzy to this day.  —- [eric]

Watch 17-Year-old shock crowd after the Killers pull him on stage

A 17-year old kid was plucked from a crowd at the Killers recent headlining set at the Riptide festival in Florida, and when Brandon Flowers put him behind the drum kit on the song “For Reasons Unknown”, he absolutely killed it.  His name is Jayson Verebay and he was clearly feeling overwhelmed by this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“As I was coming up there, my heart was pounding and I was actually shaking,” Verebay told Rolling Stone right after The Killers’ set, which closed night one of this year’s Riptide Fest. “It was the most mind-boggling experience ever.”

The KIllers will drop their new album  “Imploding the Mirage,”  in the spring.

The Dark Web is home to new ‘Murdershow’ movie

Horror movies are hard to come by during the holiday season, as the big studios push out their family-friendly features and Oscar baiting, critical favorites. Thank goodness for indie horror, as “Murdershow” is set to remind us that the Dark Web can be a terrifying place.

Looks like the trailer’s been circulating for a couple years. Not sure if that’s a strike against the movie or not…

Most popular Thanksgiving side dish in Illinois? Stuffing

Google Trends is tracking the most-searched side dishes in each state. In California and Michigan, it’s macaroni and cheese. Here in Illinois, along with Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, it’s all about stuffing. Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas are seeking out dressing. Up to our north, Wisconsin is Googling sweet potatoes with marshmallows. Texas needs some detail on fruit salad. Tennessee has a hankering for creamed corn and North Dakota is searching for… keto soup.

Beware fake Rage Against the Machine dates floating around

So you may have seen a poster floating around this weekend with ‘leaked’ tour dates for the reunited Rage Against the Machine in 2020 including Chicago’s Riot Fest. well it looks it was all fake. AltPress reports through multiple sources that the poster was put together by an unnamed ‘troll’ in Australia. It’s just too easy to play with music fans emotions and get something like this to go viral. No need to share it here as it’s not legit.

The band and the festivals around the world have not acknowledged the fake poster. RATM did confirm the following shows in an official Insagram post which includes in the Coachella festival.

Green Day, Foo Fighters, & More: Watch the best Queen covers

Late great Queen singer Freddie Mercury is one of the most enduring and beloved voices in all of music. This Sunday marks the 28th anniversary of his passing. His influence has continued generations removed from his work with the multi-platinum rock band with many alternative artists covering his work. Here are some of the best Queen covers by our favorite 101WKQX bands.

Jukebox the Ghost actually did an entire Queen tribute set at our Halloween Bash a few years back. This cover is so rousing with the layered three-part harmonies.

Brendon  Urie has a high register slayer of a voice and he proved it on the hard-to-pull off cover of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

Taylo Hakwins of the Foo Fighters is able to gracefully pull off Mercury’s famous crowd work in this 2017 cover of ‘Under Pressure’ at Madison Square Garden. Oh, why not have Luke Spiller of the Struts jump in because he has such a ready Freddie vibe.

My Chemical Romance and the Used tag teamed for their own ‘Under Pressure’ cover for charity causes helping victims of the disastrous 2005 tsunami.

Green Day pay their dues with the sports anthem ‘We are the Champions’ with a massive UK crowd singing every note with them.

Watch Coldplay perform sunrise and sunset sets in Jordan

Coldplay released their new album ‘Everyday Life’ this week, and 101WKQX played the whole thing before it hit the streaming services with Thursday night’s Uninterrupted Disruption but the guys were not done doing big things for the album release. Chris Martin and company took a scenic mountain top space this week to do live sets at sunrise and sunset in Jordan. You can watch both sets here.

Do you think they took a nap in the middle of the day? What did the neighborhood think of being woken up to the sunrise set? No matter what, it’s quite the striking visual.

Stream Beck’s new album ‘Hyperlife

Mr. Hansen has returned. Beck, the innovative veteran maverick of alternative music dropped his 14th studio album this week ‘Hyperlife; which you can stream in full through YouTube here. The album is out on all major streaming services, and sees Beck with an all-star team delivered another wild new journey into what’s funky, what’s out there, and beyond.

Pharrel whose known more for his work in hip hop and pop music helped produce several tracks, and added a simplified take on Beck’s big mix of funk, folk, rap, and rock.  “I really tried to be less ambitious on the production on these songs, like to let them be simple and let them breathe,” Beck told NME . “Pharrell is a master minimalist. On production I’m a bit of a maximalist… I’ve really tried to reform myself to let it become more simple.”

If you are long time fan of Beck, you will not be disappointed. Also dig into our exclusive Lounge session with Beck and his amazing band below.

Hyperspace Tracklist:
01. Hyperlife
02. Uneventful Days
03. Saw Lightning
04. Die Waiting
05. Chemical
06. See Through
07. Hyperspace
08. Stratosphere
09. Dark Places
10. Star

Great video series dives into the history of “Pumped Up Kicks”

Stumbled upon this video channel on YouTube — and for real, Professor of Rock orchestrates great story telling about the music that continues to dominate the world’s playlists.  And with “Pumped Up Kicks” from Foster The People recently named one of the 100 songs of the decade by Billboard, I thought it was appropriate to share the story behind the circumstances, the riffs, and the lyrics of this great tune.  — [eric]

HELP! My Amazon Echo is a glorified kitchen timer…

It’s been a year since I was gifted by Amazon Echo, and I’ve found that my smart speaker is really just a glorified kitchen timer.
Sure, I use it to stream 101WKQX when I’m not near a radio (and here’s a reminder on how you can make THAT happen).  Listening to music is what Americans do most with smart speakers, it turns out.  But besides being a witness to my hypothetical future murder, what else can we really make these things do?
I decided to find out.  And here’s what I found:
ALEXA CAN BE YOUR TRANSLATOR.
When you say “Alexa, open Translated,” you now can speak a zillion different languages — or, you know…at least you can ask where the library is the next time you are vacationing in Mexico. (Donde está la biblioteca.  It’s the only thing I retain from two years of high school Spanish class.)
ALEXA CAN WAKE YOU UP TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN AN ANNOYING BEEPING SOUND.
Just say — “Alexa, wake me up to 101WKQX at 7:15AM.”  And you can wake up to a battle of wits with Know-It-Ali Trivia with the KQX Morning Crew.
ALEXA CAN HELP YOU FIGURE OUT WHAT TO EAT.
Do you have a half bag of rice, a can of peaches, & those fried onion thingies hanging out in your cupboard? Say “Alexa, open Meal Idea,” tell her at least three items you have laying around, and she will suggest a recipe.  (By the way, if you can make a meal out THOSE three items, you are officially a kitchen GOD.)
ALEXA CAN TELL YOU WHAT THE TEMPERATURE REALLY IS IN CHICAGO.
No surprise that you can ask smart speakers what the weather outside, but in Chicago — wind chill is one of the most important pieces of information.  So just ask “Alexa, what is the wind chill?”  Now you’ll know how bad you will freeze today.
ALEXA CAN HELP YOU FIGURE OUT A SONG BASED ON JUST THE LYRICS.
Do you have problems remembering song titles?  When you say “Alexa, play that song that goes ‘nobody likes you when you’re 23′” — Echo will figure out that you want to hear Blink-182’s “What’s My Age Again” and start playing it.
ALEXA CAN REMIND YOU WHERE YOU PUT THINGS.
Maybe you are like me and do a REALLY good job of hiding important things — so good, that remembering where they are later is an issue?  Say “Alexa, remember that my passport is in the bottom drawer of the desk.”  Then just before your mad scramble to O’Hare, you can ask “Alexa, where is my passport?” — and you won’t be late for your flight.
These are just a few things that you might not know Alexa can handle.  You can always check in on CNET’s complete list of Alexa commands, which is ever-expanding.  — [eric]
