History of Alternative: Deftones went beyond ‘nu metal’ with ‘White Pony’

As we feel the retrospective energies of History of Alternative on 101WKQX come near their end on-air, it’s interesting to see how some established bands have shredded the label that music culture put on them and evolved over the years. One of the best examples of this is Deftones who with their exceptional ‘White Pony’  album, separated themselves from the ‘nu-metal’ trend of heavier bands with lyrics about inner torment.  Chino Morino and the crew pushed it with dreamy ballads, ambiance, and shoegaze sauce on top of their proven rock body of work. The album still stands proudly as one of their best works with some memorable cameos on vocals from Stone Temple Pilots’ Scott Weiland and Tool’s Maynard James Keenan. Trash Theory on YouTube produced this insightful short documentary on how ‘White Pony’ helped California group break from a pack of bands they were just lumped in within the late ’90’s. It also has stories around the creation of the music that is amusing with a haunted house, ‘knife paries’, and debauchery all playing a part.

If you are enjoying the History of Alternative, keep your ears out for the new podcast series from 101WKQX of the same name. The podcast will dig deep into the vast worlds of alternative and the stories of the bands who formed our collective lives. Yes, it will be really cool.

You can stream it in  Also, scroll down to hear how Deftones have evolved with their latest ‘Ohms’.

‘Ohms’ was recently released to some great reviews.

Are people already calling dibs in Chicago?

There are two types of people. Those who raise a family, work hard and provide, pay there taxes…

And then there are people who call dibs.

IN OCTOBER!

If I see a cone or a chair, or your funny little cutout  to call dibs on a parking spot. You better believe I’m yeeting that place holder to the moon and taking that spot.

Papa needs a parking spot.

C’mon people! Dibs already? It’s October 5th!!!!

SAVE OUR STAGES: City of Chicago launches grant program for music venues

A few months ago 101WKQX put Brian, Allie, and Justin on-air for 34 hours for the Save Our Stages radiothon in partnership with the Chicago Independent Venue League, an organization that represents dozens of Chicago’s beloved rock clubs and music venues. It was magically good radio and raised thousands of dollars for a worthy cause. The need for our friends in the live entertainment world continues as the pandemic sloths past the six-month mark, with none of the venues open and the bills still piling up.

The City of Chicago has launched a special grant program for these venues along with theater and dance halls which will begin taking applications this Monday. It will grant recipients up to $10,000. This is good news but as these venues continue in these current circumstances they will be some of the last to reopen on the other side of all this.  They still need our help. Scroll down to find out more.

Owners of the Hideout and the Chop Shop spoke to ABC 7 this week about the ongoing struggles of our these venues and how the grant program can help alleviate some of their current financial burdens. You can donate to CIVL and help out great venues that we have all made memories in our lives. Click here.

Try not to cry watching this #Saveourstage venue tour video of Chicago’s rock clubs sitting empty with the emotional tones of Varaha playing a heavy instrumental. It’s very hard to see the Metro, Subterranean, the Beat Kitchen, Lincoln Hall, Reggies, and more of our local clubs not filled with life.   Block Club Chicago reported recently on how venues like those represented in CIVL and many more across the country are in serious danger without the intervention of government aid. The National Independent Venue Association has stated that 90% of these venues do not believe they can survive the shutdown if it persists without federal aid. You can find out more about NIVA at their website here.

City of Shamokin will allow people to drive off-road vehicles through city streets to attract tourists

The City of Shamokin, yes real name, will allow people to drive off-road vehicles around their city streets.

The hope is to attract more tourists.

I mean i guess that could bring some tourists in… right?

Wait why does this town sound so familiar???

OH YEAH! Shamokin is the town whose Dunkin Donuts burnt down!

That is one of the best videos you can find on the internet. It’s scientifically proven. Just trust us.

Good to see they’re still up to their shenanigans out there.

The ultimate ‘horse girl’ will be featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

There is a nice young lady out in Canada who has a very… interesting skill.

She can perfectly emulate the movements of a horse!

This strange skill has landed her into  Ripley’s Believe It or Not! a book all about weird people and strange things.

Congrats to her, i think?

How do she even figure out that she could do this?

Florida man sues McDonald’s over McNugget injury

A man in Florida claims that a fluke McNugget caused him an injury!

It was one fateful night back in May when the man who claims the injury ordered some delicious Chicken McNuggets off of Uber Eats.

He claims that he bit into one nugget that had a hidden bone inside, causing him to crack a tooth in half. He had to get the tooth extracted and replaced, causing a lot of pain both physically and financially.

Now he is suing McDonald’s for $1 million and is calling for a recall of all McNuggets. This singular man could cause the biggest nugget shortage this country has ever seen.

So just in case you can’t order some Chicken McNuggets for awhile, here is a video showing you how to make them at home!

Da Bears! Watch the hilarious history of SNL’s ‘Superfans’

In the 1991 season, the Bears had a strong 11-5 record with Mike Topmczak filling in for Jim Harbaugh in the quarterback position while the team headed into the playoffs. Chicago-based actor Joe Mantegna and the SNL cast struck the perfect timing in January of that year with “Bill Swerski’s Superfans’. The sketch spoofed working class blowhard fans on local sports radio spouting off irrational observations and blind devotion to all things Ditka while also roasting our local indulgence in cured meats.

It was an instant hit and produced a series of sketches featuring ‘Cheers’ star George Wendt (who was never an SNL cast member) running a panel of oafish but lovable fans who oozed love for ‘DA BEARS’. It’s one of the most well-known pieces of comedy to satirize our city. It showed the unfiltered ChiKAAAAgo accent to the world. When I have traveled to other parts of the country doing comedy shows, people would ask me if anyone here actually talks like that. It made a lasting impression that goes much farther than Cook County. Below are some of best ‘Superfan’ sketches that featured some of SNL’s best all-time performers in Mike Meyers and Chris Farley.

It’s worth noting that comedy writer Robert Smigel was the real creative force and regularly appeared in the sketches himself. Here is a look at their 2010 reunion at the Just For Laughs Festival where they reveal a bit about the never-made Superfan movie.

In 1993, oh excuse me…199tree, the guys bemoaned Coach Ditka leaving Chicago.

Bill Swerski’s Super Fans Cold Open
This was one of the best. Michael Jordan joining the Superfans to celebrate DA BULLS most recent NBA Championship.

Bill Swerski’s Super Fans
Here the fellas give New York Knicks fans tips on how to deal with their upcoming defeat at the hands of DA BULLS.

In this gem, Swerski and the guys get ridiculous when they claim what the Monsters of the Midway would do if they all raced the Indy 500.

They even got to be in local TV commercials for Bulls tickets in the early 90s as well.

The free ride is over: ticket checks at Ogilvie will start Monday.

If you’ve been getting something for nothing on Metra the last six months, that’s potentially changing for you.

The three commuter lines that run in and out of Ogilvie Transportation Center will start collecting fares at that station starting Monday (October 5th).  In addition, riders will be asked to show a valid ticket getting on or off trains at the downtown Chicago terminus.

It’s important to note, however, that all of the changes are happening at Ogilvie.  Conductors still will not collect fares on board trains.  And as you can read in this article from The Woodstock Independent, there’s some unanswered questions and confusion between the Union Pacific (who owns the tracks) and Metra (who operates the trains).  — [eric]
