The free ride is over: ticket checks at Ogilvie will start Monday.

If you’ve been getting something for nothing on Metra the last six months, that’s potentially changing for you.

The three commuter lines that run in and out of Ogilvie Transportation Center will start collecting fares at that station starting Monday (October 5th).  In addition, riders will be asked to show a valid ticket getting on or off trains at the downtown Chicago terminus.

It’s important to note, however, that all of the changes are happening at Ogilvie.  Conductors still will not collect fares on board trains.  And as you can read in this article from The Woodstock Independent, there’s some unanswered questions and confusion between the Union Pacific (who owns the tracks) and Metra (who operates the trains).  — [eric]

Top 10 Best Nirvana cover songs

Halloween traditions are going to be quite different this year. Kids will be doing trick ‘r treating through PVC pipes.and we are going to have to work a face mask into any costume we were going for. One tradition that is still going this year involves a beloved alternative band doing an entire tribute set as one of their favorite bands. 101WKQX’s beloved pals Local H will perform as Nirvana at a socially-distant drive-in concert on Halloween October 31st outside the Schaumberg Boomers stadium. Get your tickets here.

On that note, let’s stream some of the best covers of the Seattle legends. These are listed in no apparent order, just enjoy them wishing you were back in the 90’s.

Nirvana and St. Vincent – Lithium

When Nirvana was inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, the surviving members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl came up with a unique way to perform:  have a whose-who of female singers perform with them. One of the best of the bunch was Annie Clark who you likely know as St. Vincent.

Post Malone Nirvana Livestream.

As the COVID-19 pandemic forced us all home, rapper and rock musician Post Malone assembled a killer band including Blink-182’s Travis Barker on drums to do a full set of Nirvana covers that helped raise over $7 million for the World Health Organization’S fight against the virus. It is so outstanding that it pulled in 14 million-plus views on YouTube. We could not do this list without including this.

Patti Smith- Smells like teen spirit

This folksy take on the song that changed the world is quite chill in comparison to the original but Smith her emotional gravity really pulls it off.

Evanescence – Heart-Shaped Box

Amy Lee’s voice croons and swoons through this acoustic cover and still retains all of this tracks originally dreary grit.

The Coverups – Drain You

You should not just blindly scroll past this one because you did not recognize the name. The Coverups are just a not-so-secret cover band lead by Billie Joe Armstrong and other Green Day friends on special occasions.

Polyphonic Spree – Lithium

This twenty-something membered collective is known for putting out a very positive and at-times psychedelic vibe with grandiose results. That all plays up this song off the ‘Nevermind’ with horn sections, many backup singers, cellos, harps, and many elements never featured in the original version.

Tori Amos – Smells like teen spirit

The haunting sustain hum of a grand piano with the queen of emotional 90s alternative anthems Tori Amos. Yes, it will raise the hair on your arms.

Big Scary – Come As You Are

Australia’s Triple J has produced some very popular live covers on YouTube including this dream-pop spin of  ‘Comes Ad You Are’ from Big Scary.

Architects – Territorial Pissings

This UK rock band unleashes the rage of the 1991 gem on the BBC audience.

Sinead O’Connor – All Apologies

Released just a few months after Kurt Cobain’s death, this gracefully delivered softer version by Irish songbird Sinead O’Connor saw her share the mental health struggles she has had with Cobain.

Regal Cinemas closing due to pandemic-related movie delays

Regal  Cinema, the second-biggest movie theater chain in the United States is closing according to a report this week by Variety. Regal’s parent company Cineworld responded to the recent news that the upcoming James Bond film ‘No Time To Die’ has been postponed yet again due to the Coronavirus pandemic to April 2, 2021. This unfortunate move will close 543 Regal locations in North America along with their Cinerworld theaters in the U.K. and Ireland.  These theaters are expected to remain closed into 2021. The Chicago Tribune has the full story here.

The Bond blockbuster was expected to hold firm with it’s November 2020 release so the postponement is yet another devastating blow to the movie theater industry which has seen Americans reluctant to come back to theaters in big numbers due to pandemic-related concerns and major studios pushing major films back into 2021. The Christopher Nolan epic ‘Tenet’ was hoped to be a savior for the cinema business but it failed to meet those expectations earning just $20 million in the U.S. in its first weekend. This followed opening first overseas with a $53 million. take according to Variety.

Regal has 10 locations in and around Chicago that will be impacted by the closures. It is not clear whether these closures are permanent at this time.

Movie expert Dan Murrell lays out how these big delays for huge titles hitting theaters is such a major blow to the theater chains.

How “Seven Nation Army” became THE sports anthem — worldwide.

There is no bigger song from 2003 than “Seven Nation Army” from The White Stripes.  But this is no mere radio hit, as we find out in this video from Middle 8.  This is a song that anyone can chant the chords from….that anyone can use a trash can or a plastic stadium seat to bang out the beat.  It is for this reason — and others, as you will see below — that “Seven Nation Army” not only became a part of our playlists, but a part of sports fandom in general.

So go crank it up.  Or, as an alternative — crank up a version of the song played on a rubber band, vacuum cleaner, and a toy frog.  And don’t forget to crank of The History Of Alternative.  — [eric]

Watch Katie Porter destroy a big pharma jerk with a whiteboard and some facts

There is no better feeling in the world, besides maybe a free t shirt, then watching a super rich person get put in their place.

That’s what Katie Porter specializes in. She even brings a whiteboard to write out the facts for them!

Yes! That’s how you start off a Friday!

Manley’s Mixtape- Green Day

Somebody wake Billy Joe Armstrong up, September is over and I made a Green Day mixtape!  From their humble beginnings as a punk band naming their albums after poop, to rock opera making, arena playing icons, Green Day have cemented themselves as one of the biggest alt bands of all time.  Here are a few of my favorite songs
