Local H

Ryan Harding, drummer for Local H, posted this video for the first recording of The Misanthrope made by Hayden Scott, drummer for Filter, using his compiled footage from their tour together in 2014.

I love this band, I love this song and this footage is awesome since Chicago didn’t get a Local H, Helmet, Filter tour date that year.

But we did get Local H at PIQNIQ…

And some shakey footage of The One With Kid shot by James Gwynn at PIQNIQ:

The boys are on break from tour at the moment… will we get another Scott Lucas Lollapalooza drop by?

We shall see.  See you in Grant Park!  <3 @laurenoneil

Marv

In case you need more proof that the 90’s are returning; Daniel Stern (Marv from Home Alone) is still screaming about spiders. Looks like he caugt a BIG on in his garage.

Not bad. But, as far as screams go, this one is pretty high on the list…

STRANGER THINGS CREATORS TALKS FUTURE SEASONS FOR THE SHOW

strangerthings

(from nerdist.com)

The highlight of summer 2016 hasn’t been any blockbuster movie, at least so far. Nope, it’s the pleasant surprise that is the new Netflix series Stranger Things, which dropped its eight-episode first season on July 15. The horror/mystery series and Amblin throwback, which stars Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine, and is set in 1983, is the story of what happens in a small Indiana town when a little boy suddenly goes missing. This mystery eventually leads into an even larger, far more bizarre one. (MORE HERE)

I loved this series so much. Very great. Everything 80’s and so much more. If you haven’t watched it yet you must!! Trailer below. – marconi

Thom Yorke = Satan?

Catching up on what I missed over the last week, and some Christian ministry twitter posted this over the weekend:

tom satan

P.S. some of the reply comments are gold

I’m not sure if they are saying Thom Yorke IS Satan or that Thom Yorke is a slave of Satan but I really hope there is some kind of Radiohead vs Satan rock off Pick of Destiny style showdown at Lollapalooza Saturday night.

P.P.S. there are naughty words in this video if you are new to Tenacious D

P.P.P.S. If you need Lolla tickets we are blowing them out all week, cheat sheet HERE

In more Satanic news, Thom’s new 45-minute “Radiohead Bedtime Mix”  includes his live solo version of “Bloom” from the Pathway to Paris charity concert last year HERE

Comic Con trailers for Justice League, Wonder Woman, Luke Cage, and More

Let’s look all the exciting trailers and teaser videos coming out of SDCC. It’s like going to Comic Con without having to diet to fit into a Batman costume, travel to Californi  or waiting in all the lines for celebrity autographs, or it’s nothing like that at all. Who cares, let’s dig in here.

The superhero goodies keeping out of this year’s San Diego Comic Con with the release of the teaser for upcoming Marvel series ‘Luke Cage’. It shows off there mega-strong  Cage  storming through thug’s headquater. wrapping a car door around a foe, and ripping through a wall like it was a bag of potato chips. It’s just super-powered fun that shows off this cool-under-fire character who you may remember as Jessica Jone’s love interest in the last year’s first Marvel series on Netflix. For those attending SDCC, this Cage trailer is getting rave reviews and some are calling the best trailer to be rolled at this year’s Con.

Now Cage may not be the most popular superhero, so here is WatchMojo to exclaim in nerdtastic introduction to the ‘Hero for Hire’ ‘Power Man’ Luke Cage and how he came to be.

A long time associate in crime-fighting the Iron Fist is also getting the upgrade from the comic pages to a Netflix series, the Iron Fist. This teaser has less footage but lays out the origin for this abandoned kid turned martial art master who comes back to NYC for revenge. It does not elicit the ‘feels’ that the Cage trailer did, but it certainly seems like a character you can build on.

Much like the Marvel films of a few years ago, these two series will play together to form the Defenders, a team series which will also include other Marvel featured on Netflix with Daredevil and Jessica Jones. So yet another reason that Netflix is taking over your life, and also this incredible thing that may change Netflix in a big way.

And just a few hours since being uploaded after presentation at SDCC, DC gets it’s hat in the superhero game with a engaging trailer for Wonder Woman, who is easily the most beloved female hero in all of comics. Played by Gal Gadot and featured in the recent ‘Batman v Superman’, this movie will show Wonder Woman’s origin while retaining her fierce abiliy to take down anyone in her way. This looks legit. If you know a female friend whose into more female-focused fantasy/sci-fi shows like ‘Vampire Diaries’, get them to see this.

Right now a ton of movie and comic fans just typed the words ‘OMG’ online while they watched this teaser for Justice League which was especially prepared for SDCC. This footage was not announced in advance so it benefits from being a huge surprise. In it Bruce Wayne/Batman goes on the hunt for ‘warriors’ to take on an impending threat. Cut to the DC Cinematic debuts of the Flash (different from the CW TV show) and Aquaman who apparently likes drinks whiskey while he controls fish with his mind. It strikes that same ‘they are all together’ tone that Avengers gave fans some years ago, let’s just hope it can deliver on it’s promise.

Last month Warner Bros Studios released a synopsis of ‘Justice League’: “Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and the Flash — it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”

Trailer for Marvel’s The Defenders will make Nirvana fans mark out

With entertainment heaven San Diego Comic Con going down this week, expect a LOT of cool new trailers and teases for your favorite scifi/fantasy/superhero shows to hit the web. The first big one is a teaser for next year’s big Netflix series, Marvel’s The Defenders. This series will weave together the stories of two current Netflix shows Jessica Jones and Daredevil with two new heroes who all form one team to defend New York City. The use of the provocative lyrics of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain really hits an exciting tone here. @kevkellam

Bulls open to hosting 2017, future All-Star Games after NBA nixes Charlotte

ucBULLS

(from chicagotribune.com)

Michael Jordan authored so many winning moments at the United Center. Could a loss for his current franchise’s city provide an opportunity for the Bulls arena to mark a significant first?

The NBA’s historic decision Thursday to pull the February 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte because of North Carolina’s anti-LGBT legislation has created a venue void.

And while Yahoo Sports reported that New Orleans has emerged as the front-runner to land the 2017 game, the league is considering Chicago among several potential options.

The Bulls last hosted an All-Star Game in 1988 at the Chicago Stadium, with Jordan winning a memorable dunk contest against Dominique Wilkins and earning MVP honors during the game. Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and son Michael, the team’s president and chief operating officer, have stated their lack of desire to host the game at the United Center out of respect for season ticket holders, who mostly get displaced when the league takes over the venue. (MORE HERE)

This would be an incredible opportunity!! Maybe other cities should select a representive to play a game of HORSE. The winner gets the ALL STAR GAME!! Chicago gets Michael Jordan by default OBVIOUSLY!! – marconi

Comedy Expo this weekend proves Chicago is the funniest city

logo2016

So much funny in one weekend in one city. SNL star Jay Pharoh is on air tomorrow with Bryan and Lou showing of his game to tease his shows this weekend at Zanies, but the city of Chicago has been grinding out the funniest people in the chuckle arts for decade which is exemplified in the DIY comedy festival Comedy Exposition.

A few years ago the Just For Laughs with huge backers left Chicago, and in it’s place Chicago comedy entrepreneurs did what our city did in the 1800’s when we had the Great Fire of 1871 , we put on the World’s Fair of 1893 ‘the Colombian Exposition’. But this festival is way better and they didn’t even need to invent the Ferris Wheel to be better too.

Comedy Expo takes place at several independent venues through several different neighborhoods starting with a kick-off show tonight called 42×42 which features 42 comics doing quick-hit 42 second sets at Coles. Come for the bathroom graffiti, stay for the comedy. The action then spreads into Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, and other near Northside areas for shows that will feature comics from here and beyond showing why this is the funniest city in America. As someone who besides talking into microphones also (y)ells jokes into mics all around town, here are 5 comics who I can assure you should go see this weekend.

When he’s not pointing at buildings for tourists on top of double-decker buses downtown, David Phillips is making fun himself and anything else on stages across the city. Phillips cuts to the dirty secrets of some Cubs fans at Wrigley Field in this clip from the JBTV produced Fourstar Stand Ups.  See him Friday upstairs at Schubas on a showcase headlined by Rebecca O’Neal at 9:30pm.

Laugh Factory regular Reena Calm has no filter and that is what comedy is about: being yourself as much as you can. She has said things on stage that I would be scared to say in front of a mirror. Her work ethic is through the roof, booking her own tours, and scratching off towns on her map while tweeting off gems like “Women who wear heels all the time are probably unstable. If you like comics like Amy Schumer, than this in this Fourstar Stand Ups clip with Reena will be right up your alley. Reena Calm hosts the Putterbaugh Sisters showcase at @North Bar on Saturday at 9:30pm

Rhea Butcher came storming out of Chicago (where she hosted the Coles Open Mic in Logan Square) and has been kicking all the butts in Los Angeles with her weekly live show ‘Put Your Hands Together’ and along with her wife/fellow comedian Cameron Esposito (see her below on ‘the Late Show’) are releasing their new show ‘Take My Wife’ which will soon be available on NBC’s all comedy streaming service Seeso. You can catch a preview screening of the series at the Hideout on Saturday at 5:30pm. Despite having the name ‘Butcher’, Rhea talks about the struggles of being vegetarian in this clip from Conan.

Calvin Evans started as the class clown in a Chicago school, doing Eddie Murphy impressions and the guy just hustled his way around the country since. Evans has performed all the major comedy clubs in the city and throughout the Midwest. He also understands why your Dad is really mad all the time. In this Fourstar Stand Ups clip, he  lays out a wonderful argument for why Father blows a gasket because your entire family is leaving the lights on. Evans headlines a showcase of fantastic comics with must-see host Keith Paesel at the ‘@North’ Bar on Saturday at 6:30pm.

Megan Gailey is one of the funniest and most intimidating people in comedy that I have ever worked with, she has a level of sass that is not measurable on any known scientific scale. Is there a measurement for sass? Back to Gailey, her ability to have a comedy that bites first and asks questions later lead her to a spot on the MTV prank series, Ladylike which recently debuted. She headlines the Expo’s showcase in the main room of Schuba’s on Friday at 8pm. Here she is killing it on Conan earlier this year.

Comedy Expo also features shows from ‘Whose Line is it Anyway?’ cast member Greg Poops, cult favorite Eddie Pepitone, You can all the info on when and where the shows are at comedyexposition.com

Twenty-One Pilots release new live video for ‘Ride’

twenty-one-pilots-lolla-aftershow-654x

Twenty-One Pilots continuing to take over the whole gee golly world. They did just that in this video shot at the Fox Theaeter in Oakland, California. This performance culminates with Josh doing one of the band’s signature feats of daring-rock-do, playing the final drum sequence on top of the crowd. This is just a sliver of the spectacle that this duo puts on with their current Emotional Road Show tour which a second lap through Chicago in January, enter to twin tickets to that show here and simply scroll to the bottom to plug in your info.

My Chemical Romance are NOT getting back together

1364187397_mcr1

Sad news guys, the jubilant of post of many a black eye-shadow wearing gal and a black demin wearing guy yesterday may have all been for nothing, as 00’s alt band My Chemical Romance is not happening. The rumor mill was churning at full blast yesterday when the band’s official website and social medias all flipped to a new logo and teased the date September 23, 2016. The speculation got to fever pitch with a video that simply played off the opening notes of ‘the Black Parade’ as a flag waved in the sky. It seemed like a graceful tease for the return of Gerard Way and company to get us screaming we’re not okaaaaaay again.

Yet MCR clarified today in a Facebook post that they indeed not launching a reunion in anyway, but are simply releasing a 10th anniversary edition of ‘the Black Parade’ album.

We’ve been really touched and blown away by the response to the teaser trailer. We are not touring and there is no reunion planned – only a release for the anniversary of The Black Parade. Thanks so much for continuing to keep MCR in your minds and in your hearts.

My Chemical Romance

MCR broke up in 2013. You can get the whole story on what they’ve been up to since then here.
