The Story Behind The Story: The Lumineers “Ophelia”

The Lumineers

I always love to hear the stories behind the songs you here on 101WKQX.  The melody and lyrics for “Ophelia” by The Lumineers were reached…very easily.  Yet, the entire process of making this new album was very hard on the band.

Check out this Song Exploder podcast featuring a chat with Wesley and Jeremiah about how Ophelia came to be:

VIDEO: Conor McGregor really wants his UFC championship title belt

cxiu4jcukaazkhm

The Notorious One continued to be just that. Conor McGregor continued his unrelenting domination in the UFC with a KO win last night in New York’s Madison Square Garden over Eddie Alvarez to become the first fighter in the company to hold two divisional championship titles at the same time. McGregor has become well-known for his vitriolic trash talking of other fighters and his braggadocios post-fight promo with Joe Rogan was all that, and more. McGregor complains that the multi-billion dollar fighting promotion did not immoderately have his second title ready for his celebration, and of course throws in a lot of F-bombs. Teasing a possible cooler head , the UFC Featherweight and Lightweight Champion teased an apology to fighters he had spoken ill of, but then cut it off saying “he’d like to take this chance to apologize to absolutely nobody!”

NOTE: ‘Adult Language’ is present, but it’s beeped.

VIDEO: Dave Chapelle sings Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ at SNL afterparty

1-bqdlmuxba8m-baxwrzxhgg

Last night’s episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’ was the talk of the internet Sunday morning with comedy icon Dave Chapelle cracking jokes on the topic of this week’s Presidential election, and with all that buzz Chapelle took another microphone later in the evening to sing the Radiohead hit ‘Creep’ at a loud and raucous after party. The post came from the Roots drummer Questlove who said  “In a life full of highlights? I’m glad I waited til 5:22am for this….”. I would wait around all night for a sing-a-long like this too.

In a life full of highlights? I’m glad I waited til 5:22am for this….

A video posted by Questlove Gomez (@questlove) on Nov 13, 2016 at 2:23am PST

Of course, Chapelle really got the internet pot stirring with his opening monologue. It’s still surprising such a big comedy star like this has not hosted ‘SNL’ before, but here he is riffing gracefully on the most talked about story in America. NOTE: This video does feature some NSFW language, so you have been warned. Watch it here.

Former Chicago Blackhawk Bryan Bickell diagnosed with multiple sclerosis

The Chicago Tribune reported today that Bryan Bickell former left winger for the Chicago Blackhawks and currently playing with the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL, has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a disease that can affect your brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves in your eyes. More than 2.3 million people have been affected by multiple sclerosis worldwide, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

In a statement on the Hurricane’s website, Bickell discussed the diagnosis and his pursuit to return to the ice.

“Since the 2015 playoffs, I’ve been struggling to understand what was going on with my body. Again during the past few weeks, it felt like something wasn’t right,” said Bickell. “Obviously this is a bit of shock for my family and me, but I am hopeful I will be able to return to the ice and continue playing the game that I love.”

Playing out of Ontatio, Bickell was drafted by the Blackhawks in 2004 in the second round and has scored 66 goals and 70 assists in his NHL career. Bickell was part of the Hawk’s 2010, 2013, and 2015 Stanley Cup wining teams before being moved to Carolina earlier this year.

Off the ice, Bickell and his wife Amanda have been helping with “pitbull” dog awareness and using these same dogs to help assist formerly abused children through their Bryan and Amanda Bickell Foundation. The charity group is set to release a 2017 calendar featuring Bickell and some of his famous hockey pals posing with adorable dogs. And yes, you will be able to see Marian Hossa pet a puppy. For more on that, go here.

A few summers ago, I was fortunate enough to briefly meet Bryan while at a street festival. He signed the 101WKQX van and was a joy to be around. Our hearts are with Bryan and his family during this tough time.

Snapchat Spectacles released through weird ‘Snapbot’ boxes

snapbot

That is not a Minion, though it does look like one. It’s the new vending machine that popped up in California today for Snapchat’s hotly anticipated release of Spectacles which allow the user to snapchat video with glasses that link to your smartphone. The eye wear companion device  which will likely increase your 13 second video addiction, gained a lot of attention when it was first announced earlier this year, but little has been known about it’s release until today. The ‘Snapbot’ vending machine is not widely present across the country, and it appears based on Twitter posts from @Spectacles official handle, it made one public appearance today in Venice Beach, garnered long lines. If that’s not weird enough for you, the Snapbots blink and follow you as you approach them. You know, that’s not creepy at all right?

Finding the Snapbot is not exactly easy, as they are rumored to be popping up in major cities all over but your best bet is to go spectacles.com/map. It will cost you $129 for a pair.

The celebs always get the cool stuff first, right? Even in this apparent word-of-mouth campaign by Snapchat, it helps when a big name TV personality like Ellen DeGeneres to give it buzz. The daytime talk show host and comedian got to get her own pair of Spectacles today and shared the experience of snapping in POV on her Youtube channel. It’s sort of like your filming your own less scary version of ‘Blair Witch Project’.

System of a Down confirm new album is coming

system-of-a-down-2015

It’s been 11 years since we heard new music from them but System of a Down are ready to release new music soon, according to a trending story with Consequence of Sound. The yet-to-titled album is currently in the works on the heels of the band announcing a string of European festival dates for 2017, and it will be their follow-up to 2005’s double LP ‘Mezmerize/Hypnotize.’ Early estimates from within the band have the record coming out next year. When talking to UK magazine Kerrang, drummer John Dolmayan said “There’s a tremendous amount of pressure on us, though, because it’s been 11 years – at least 12 by the time it comes out.” On what to expect from the long-anticipated release, Dolmayan stated “We’re not trying to make Toxicity Part II, just because it was by far our biggest album.”

Let the speculation begin as to when SOAD will make their way through the U.S.. The last time we caught them in Chicago was at the 2015 edition of Riot Fest where the California band had to stop their set several times due a muddy crowd with some unfortunate injuries.  Despite not releasing new music since the mid-00’s, the politically-minded band has toured sporadically and keeping up their various side projects.

VIDEO: THERE IS A REAL SNAKE ON A PLANE

screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-1-32-29-pm

This slither piece of creepy move-gone-real video went viral off Twitter today as a fairly large snake slithered it’s way around a flight from Torreón, Mexico on Sunday night. The flight was given a priority landing in Mexico City, where officials secured the animal.

Samuel L. Jackson of course has something to say about this.

While we are on the topic of Snakes on a Plane, why not flashback to the song off the monster movie’s soundtrack which grabbed our hearts like it was a boa constricer crushes it’s prey, Cobra Starship  with Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes and Maja Ivarsson of the Sounds “Bring It!”.

Green Day: ‘Still Breathing’ video gets you through the tough times

screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-11-09-39-am-1478535238-640x427

Green Day hits a evocative tone in the new music video for ‘Still Breathing’ off their latest album ‘Revolution Radio’ which depicts singer Billie Joe Armstrong and several characters seemingly dealing with some unstated challenge. The hunter wanders through the forest, the kid alone in the city, Billie sitting in a car that is not going anywhere, and their all trying to find something in their eyes. You ever see someone on the train or the bus, and you can just tell they are dealing with something quite serious but you are not clear what that is? Well, this song is about that is likely about that challenge to get pass the personal struggles that we all face, whether they be large or small. It doesn’t hurt that there is beautiful sweeping imagery of the seaside here as well.  The song itself is one of the best ‘you will get through this’ anthems that I can recall in recent memory.

Someone Hacked Alexa Into…A Talking Fish

A Fish Called Alexa

So, a developer named Brian Kane must have been really bored one day.  Because he decided to splice the voice-activated assistant Alexa with…a Big Mouth Billy Bass.  Huh.

Look, I’m all for science.  But mad science is no laughing matter, folks.  Think of all the splicing possibilities gone wrong.

I did.  And the movie trailer I made up in my head was terrifying (and really stupid?):
