The Weekend Q101

It’s AHOY! Weekend. For those that couldn’t get into The Salt Shed, or for anyone who wants to throw down before Brian & Justin’s biggest part of the year, The Weekend Q101 has everything you need to know about what’s going on this weekend in Chicagoland.

Friday:

Local H at Metro: Chicago’s favorite band, Local H, brings their raucous act back to the Metro for a headlining set. They will be joined by Shiner and Heet Deth. Tickets are available here.

Steve Aoki at the Aragon: Legendary EDM artist Steve Aoki is bringing his energetic live set to the Aragon as a part of his Hiroquest: Genesis Tour. Tickets can be purchased here.

Viagra Boys at The Salt Shed: If you want to get some eyes on the brand new Salt Shed before AHOY!, limited tickets are still available for Sweden’s most eclectic band, The Viagra Boys. At press time, there are exactly four tickets remaining for what should be a spectacular show. Those tickets can be purchased here.

Bulls vs. Brooklyn Nets: If you aren’t ready for live music just yet, the Bulls host the Brooklyn Nets on Friday evening at the United Center.

Saturday:

International Carnivale: Navy Pier will commemorate International Carnivale with a free celebration for guests of all ages. The one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras event will feature interactive art-making activities, and live music and dance performances inspired by festivities in Brazil, Puerto Rico, and North America. Additional information can be found here.

Polar Adventure Days: Have fun while enjoying all the wonders of nature at the annual Polar Adventure Days at Northerly Island. This free event includes tours of the island, nature-inspired crafts, hot cocoa, bonfires, animal encounters, and more. A full rundown can be found here.

Winter Brew (Saturday and Sunday): Winter Brew is Chicago’s first winter street festival, setting up in Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood.  More than a dozen breweries will line the street, alongside several local businesses. More details can be found here.

Cupid’s Undie Run: This annual tradition challenges participants to jog a chilly mile through Wrigleyville in their skivvies, all in the name of raising money for neurofibromatosis research, before retiring to Slugger’s for some scantily-clad drinking. Those who don’t want to run can donate to the cause instead. Info can be found here.

Music Frozen Dancing featuring Meat Wave, MSPAINT, and more: Goose Island Beer Co & Empty Bottle present Music Frozen Dancing 2023, the annual winter block party featuring some of the best artists from around the country that are bold enough to brave the arctic freeze of the Chicago streets in February. MSPAINT is one of the most exciting underground bands going right now. We fully endorse stopping by before AHOY! This is a free event.

Sunday:

Bulls vs. Washington Wizards: The Bulls host a Sunday matinee against the struggling Washington Wizards on Sunday. Maybe they can win this one!

Bayside at Metro: Legendary New York punk band headline the Metro to close out the weekend. Get there early to enjoy up-and-coming hardcore heavyweights Koyo, a band that should be on everyone’s radar.

A woman put her boyfriend on a “performance improvement plan” to save their relationship

A performance improvement plan, in the tech world, is something sent out to employees that are just about to be fired. A woman who claimed that her and her boyfriend “weren’t compatible” even though they shared “a lot of love”, and so she created a list of daily things for her boyfriend to fix.

@nadeenhui

we started living together really early on in our relationship so we saw all of each others living habits and lifestyles super quickly. and i honestly think it worked out better this way because we could decide if we actually wanted to work on these lifestyle habits together or split up. since it was so new, there wouldn’t be much love lost and we’d still be friends. but ultimately, we decided that we wanna stay together, and these lifestyle changes were for the better so why not do it? i had to learn to be more accepting and easy going, and he had to learn to be more tidy and considerate of shared spaces. #relationshipadvice #softwareengineerlife #lifeintech #girlsintech

AI has created a brand new Nirvana song

Kurt Cobain can live from beyond the grave thanks to modern technology. A fanatic took 10 seconds of the band’s 1993 “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle”, and 10 hours later, we have new Nirvana.

Kurt Cobain would’ve been 56 this week.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics calculated the average number of hours worked per week, statewide unemployment rates, and at-will or right-to-work employment laws, and the results showed that Indiana was the 10th most stressful state to work in in the country. The top 10 played out like this,

  1. Nevada
  2. Mississippi
  3. West Virginia
  4. Louisiana
  5. North Carolina
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Arkansas

Disney Parents find “hack”, Internet is outraged over child endangerment

There’s a little Magic in all of us, but one family may have gone too far. The Kelly family, a family influencer family, created a hack that allowed their young son, Kannon, to ride rides that he would otherwise be too short to ride at Disney.

Despite the family claiming that the family would never put their child in danger, the Internet has come after them for this “hack”.

Are the family jerks for this? The conversation lives on Facebook!

Citibank suggests Chicago man “contact thieves” who robbed him and took his savings

If you are the victim of a strong-armed robbery, don’t expect your bank to step in to assist you. Colin Johnson, a 24-year-old in Lakeview, learned that hard way that Citibank would be of no assistance after his money and phone were taken from him last August. The thieves immediately went into his phone and drained his bank account through Zelle. He lost $11,000 by the time things were done.

The bank declined Johnson’s requests for a refund and declined his appeals. When Johnson got in touch with them over his money, they suggested, “You may wish to reach out to the recipient directly to resolve this matter.”

Only one issue with that, Johnson was, you know, robbed, and didn’t know the thieves personally.

Johnson said he’s still waiting on a small portion of refunds from Citibank, but the majority of what he lost is now back in his savings account.

Study shows Coke and Pepsi will raise your testosterone, grow your testicles

Mice and men are feeling the effects of Big Soda. A series of tests showed that adult male mice had larger testicles and higher testosterone after consuming both Coke and Pepsi. This goes against the long-prevailing thought that sugary drinks lower your fertility.

Experts are urging men to not run out and drink lots of Coke or Pepsi. Soda can still lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and tooth decay.

According to the study, “One group of 30 male mice was kept in a cage, and their water bottle was filled with 50 percent Pepsi mixed with tap water. Another 30 mice were kept in a different cage and given pure Pepsi.”

After a 15-day study, the mass of the mice’s testicles was significantly higher in the groups that drank Coke and 100% Pepsi, compared to the 50% Pepsi and control groups.

Florida is looking to ban dogs from sticking their heads out the window

I don’t even recognize this country anymore.

A new Florida bill would make it illegal to let a dog be in a driver’s lap or stick their head out of a window of a moving car. The bill would require dogs to be secured in a crate while in a vehicle on public roadways, be restrained with a safety harness or seat belt other than a neck restraint, or be under the physical control of someone other than the driver while in a car.

Should the bill pass, it will go into effect onto October 1.

Tony Hawk selling Kurt Cobain “unicorn” skateboard replicas for charity.

Tony Hawk bought the original version of the skateboard, which features the artwork for Iron Maiden’s album ‘The Killers’, at an auction last year. Hand-painted by Cobain back in 1985, Hawk went about tracing the skateboard’s authenticity. Yesterday (February 20), Hawk released a series of the “unicorn” skateboards as well as prints/stickers of the design. Proceeds going toward raising awareness for mental health and for groups building skate parks.
