Foo Fighters to spend 2017 ‘recording new album’

January 4, 2017 | Marconi🍕

foo2017

(from nme.com)

Foo Fighters will reportedly spend the majority of 2017 recording their ninth album.

The US band released eighth LP ‘Sonic Highways’ in 2014, following it up with two EPs, Songs from the Laundry Room and Saint Cecilia, a year later. Despite reports that Dave Grohl is said to be working on a solo album and drummer Taylor Hawkins announcing his debut solo effort, the band had been expected to release a new album this year. January 3 saw Foo Fighters confirmed for California’s BottleRock Festival this summer, and now Dave Graham, CEO of the company behind the event, has given an interview with Napa Valley Register in which he states that the group are “in the studio” all year “recording a new album” and that BottleRock may be “their only show in 2017 in North America” (READ MORE)

MAYBE ANOTHER WRIGLEY SHOW SOON!!???

Chicago No Longer Number 1

January 3, 2017 | Marconi🍕

jarvis

(from chicagoist.com)

Chicago just scratched away a designation we’re all too happy to lose. For the first time in five long, itchy years, Chicago no longer the No. 1 city in the country for bed bugs.

Chicago has had the ignominious “honor” of dominating the annual critter rankings, which are released annually by Orkin and based on cases treated over the prior year by the pest company. Chicago had previously topped the list four consecutive years.

The new leader? Baltimore, MD, which shot to the front despite having never placed in the top five in the six years Orkin has released its data. The only Illinois metro aside from Chicago to place in the Top 50 was Champaign-Springfield-Decatur, which rose 12 spots over last year to come at No. 30 overall. Check out the national top ten below, plus how many positions each city rose or fell:

1) Baltimore (+9)
2) Washington, D.C. (+1)
3) Chicago (-2)
4) New York
5) Columbus, Ohio
6) Los Angeles (-4)
7) Detroit
8) Cincinnati
9) Philadelphia (-3)
10) San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose (+4)

(MORE HERE)

Don’t worry with a little faith and power of positive thinking we’ll be number 1 again soon enough!!

No Pants CTA Ride returns to Chicago on Sunday

January 3, 2017 | Marconi🍕

nopants

(from timeout.com)

We’ve all been there—you quickly board a CTA train only to find that you choose the same railcar as the guy who isn’t wearing pants. It’s an unpleasant memory, sure, but don’t let that one chance encounter sour you on riding the subway sans culottes.

On Sunday, pantsless adventurers in more than 30 cities worldwide will take part in the infamous No Pants Subway Ride. True to its name, the event welcomes funny people from throughout the city to get together, share some laughs and bare their briefs for a couple hours on the CTA Red Line. (MORE HERE)

I really wish we lived in a pants free world but I’m scared to sit down on the Redline with multiple layers on, there’s no way I’m taking a seat without pants!! Then the alternative of standing up leaving my underwear clad buttock to be ogled and judged by strangers!! NOPE!!

AND NO THIS IS NOT A GOOD DAY TO TRY OUT YOUR CREEPY SNAPCHAT SPECTACLES!!

New Years Eve Fails

January 3, 2017 | Lou

If you watched any NYE# television then you know how awful it all was. There were a few standouts. Kathy Griffin started the night on CNN with some super sweaty pits. Not to be outdone, CNN’s Don Lemon had too much to drink and got hie ear pierced. And then there’s Mariah Carey. Apparently she couldn’t hear herself and just decided to stop pretending to sing. I do love New Years Eve programming!

Kathy Griffin’s pits came to party. Luckily someone had a boa.

Mariah Carey lip syncing. (Shocking, right?)

VIDEO: The Killers perform w/ PAUL McCARTNEY?!

January 2, 2017 | Kevin

mccartney-killers

Yes, this is real life. The Killers, one of the biggest bands in alternative took the stage at a private NYE show for billionaire Roman Abramovich and friends in St. Barts, but as reported by Consequence of Sound the Las Vegas rock band were joined rock royalty, a freaking Beatle, Macca himself, PAUL McCartney! McCartney joined the band for a cover of the Beatle’s track “Helter Skelter”  and video clips of the miraculous collaboration have been floating online since. The Killers posted this clip  to their Facebook yesterday simply saying “so far, so good”.

How awesome would it be to see McCartney and the Killers work together on new music?

The Killers have been doing sporadic dates this past year, released their Christmas music album “Don’t Waste Your Wishes” for the Product (RED) charity, and are set to release a new studio album in 2017. The new music has been in the works since late 2015.

“Resolutions” Are A Waste Of Your Time

January 2, 2017 | Eric

new-year_resolutions_list-1

Welcome to the beginning of the year.  The time where we all swear we will change something in our lives:  aka, New Year’s Resolutions.

Forbes says that only 8% of people keep their resolutions.  So why make them?  I say don’t bother.

Instead of vague promises to “lose weight, eat more healthy, or quit smoking,” — Lifehacker suggests to be more specific on just one or two small items.  For instance:

  • “Lose weight” becomes “workout three days a week.”
  • “Eat more healthy” becomes “log my meals during the weekdays.”
  • “Quit smoking” becomes “cut back on one cigarette each week.”

Are you getting it?  Resolutions are stupid because they are unattainable.  Setting goals and changing habits a little bit at a time?  I’m all for that.  — [eric]

Digital Recreations of Deceased actors is a growing controversy

January 2, 2017 | Kevin

peter-cushing

With the passing of Carrie Fisher, the topic of using digital recreations of deceased actors to portray their memorable characters in new films has popped up again. Star Wars fans should not worry about the upcoming ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ as Fisher finished her scenes for the anticipated series film before she died of a heart attack last month. Leia was reported to have a role in the follow-up Episode IX but it’s unclear how Fisher’s death will affect that film which is a few years away.

Since the 90’s CGI tech in movies has evolved tremendously to such a high  point,  it was not a surprise to see a younger Carrie Fisher shown as her classic 1977 version of Princess Leia in the recent blockbuster smash ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’. Moff Tarkin, the coldhearted Empire leader was used in several critical scenes in ’Rogue One’ with extended dialogue even though actor Peter Cushing who portrayed the character in the original trilogy, died 20 years ago. This is not just a 2016 thing in film-making, it could be the future of movies.

Mr. Sunday Movies does a great job of digging into this topic and specifically how it has effected many beloved movie stars appearing in commercials.

Could this happen with every actor in any movie? They just get scanned up  and they will be a part of a series of films or TV shows for a long time after they have passed on from this lame reality while living on in an imagined reality we see on screen. Movieweb covers it in depth here.

Must-see Comedians take over NYE TV with ‘Chicago’s One Night Stand Up’

December 31, 2016 | Kevin

standup_header

New Year’s Eve is a night to either embrace the madness outside at bars and elsewhere or you just hunker down for a night of eventful TV. Why watch some jerk in a scarf tell you about a ball drop on the other side of the country, go with the good local stuff. Some of Chicago’s best stand up comedians are taking over the airwaves of WCIU ‘the U’ tonight at 9pm and 12am with ‘Chicago’s One Night Stand-Up’ with a special filmed from Zanie’s. Hosted by Laugh Factory regular Rebcca O’Neil with a whose who of local stand outs in stand up with Pat McGan (he kicked butt on Letterman before), the outrageous Kristen Lundberg, Martin Morrow (a frequent guest with our own Brian & Lou) and many more people who drive on the Stevenson like you. Here’s a preview from the ‘You, Me, & this Morning’.

As someone who does stand-up in Chicago, I can not express how awesome this is. These comics are hilarious and hardworking, who will make your proud to say their from our town.

If you can’t catch this tonight, DVR it or watch the encore that airs tomorrow at 8pm.

VIDEO: New music from Panic! At the Disco is coming

December 31, 2016 | Kevin

panic-sl_jsp-6922

Panic! at the Disco had a great year in  2016 with a #1 album on the BIllboard Top 200 Chart, a massive tour with Weezer, a Grammy nomination, and they spoiled us with a must-see Lounge session just a few weeks ago, watch it below. PATD is not resting on their butts, as they have confirmed this week they are working on new music for a future album all while ramping up for a big arena tour that is already SOLD-OUT for a March 11th date at the Allstate Arena (ENTER TO WIN TIX FOR THAT SHOW HERE)

Speaking to Billboard this week, Urie revealed how the band is working on new material while being still so busy with touring behind their recent hit ‘Death of a Bachelor’. ” Whether I’m writing a lyric or making a beat, every day I’m doing something. I never really stopped working, so I’m curious to do the sort of Frankenstein method now and see if I can pull all of these things to kind of jigsaw puzzle this [next] album. I’m just going to keep writing until that happens — it seems like it’s going really well right now. There’s a few ideas I’m really excited to keep working on.”

Urie also talked about doing some creative things outside of music in the future when he spoke with Lauren during our Lounge session.Could we see Urie perform on Broadway?
