Grab a free burger for M Burger’s birthday

(from chicagotribune.com)

Burgers are great, but free burgers are better. To celebrate M Burger turning seven years old, they’re giving away free grub. On March 22, waltz into any M Burger location and you’ll be able to score a free burger with the purchase of any other item on the menu. Buy some fries and, voila, you have an entire lunch. Or take your sweetie and have date night sorted. (MORE HERE)

I wish that people could get free foods on MY birthday!! That is all I’ve ever wanted.

A Real Life “Los Pollos Hermanos” At SXSW

Austin is full on into South by Southwest (SXSW) this week…and wouldn’t you know it?  Los Pollos Hermanos did a pop-up shop, bringing to life the famous chicken joint from Breaking Bad.  While the restaurant was recreated in excruciating detail down to the menu items, the only they were serving up were curly fries, dipping sauce, and water.  That didn’t stop fans from flocking to the promo location (more on that in a moment).

Look who else showed up:

That’s right.  Bob Odenkirk and Giancarlo Esposito, who played Saul Goodman and Gus Fringer in the series.  Their appearance plus the restaurant happened to promote their spin-off show, Better Call Saul.

Now if they would have JUST gotten Hector, his wheelchair, and that damn bell…it would have been perfect — [eric]

Don Draper’s Heinz ad is now a real thing

(from avclub.com)

The Mad Men season-six episode “To Have and to Hold“ saw Don Draper and Peggy Olson competing for the Heinz account with very different campaigns. While Peggy went with something more product-oriented, Don created ads that had no ketchup bottles in sight, telling the Heinz folks that their name was so inextricably linked to the condiment that consumers would have no trouble conjuring up the missing bottle in their heads. They passed on it, because Kip Pardue had little imagination, but now the real Heinz is bringing the fictional campaign to life.

Netflix binge-watching guide

(from chicagotribune.com)

Though we were blessed with a pretty tame January and February, March is shaping up to be a blistery mess of snow and freezing temps. Even if you thought the days of posting up the couch were behind you, you can still make the best of them and finally watch all of the Netflix you missed out on when it was 70 degrees in the dead of winter.

“Love” (Season 2)

The second installment in Judd Apatow‘s anti-love story comedy landed on Netflix on March 10 and follows Mickey and Gus as they try to navigate what exactly is going on between them. If you need to play catch up, Season 1 is still streaming and only has ten episodes (and features an episode from Chicago’s own Joe Swanberg), so why not give it a go as the inches pile up outside? MUSE in the studio with 3 new songs recorded

One of the biggest bands in the world MUSE are set to tour this summer with 30 Seconds to Mars and PVRIS, so it was extra exciting when NME reported today that the UK rock titans are in the studio with 3 new songs already recorded. A fan caught up with the trio near at the AIR Studio in London this week and asked them what was up while snapping a selfie for Instagram. Two of the songs were described as “heavy” and the other one not so much. MUSE had previously recorded the albums ‘Absolution’, ‘The 2nd Law’ and ‘Drones’ in the same spot. So we can all drool out of our collective mouths to see what epic jams the band is currently creating.

Check out MUSE performing the track ‘Reapers’ off the ‘Drones’ album in Cologne, Germany in 2015.

Plan to light up Chicago’s Merchandise Mart is moving forward

(from chicago.curbed.com)

Home to wholesale decorating showrooms, art galleries, and a technology incubator, Chicago’s 4 million square foot Merchandise Mart is preparing to take on yet another role as a giant projection screen. According to the Chicago Tribune, the iconic 1928 Art Deco building will host projected, multimedia art along its nearly three-acre, river-facing southern facade beginning in 2018. The possibility of utilizing the Merchandise Mart as an artistic canvas was first revealed back in 2014 as part of a preliminary study conducted by the Mayor’s Office and Choose Chicago to light the Chicago River and boost tourism. Known as the Lighting Framework Plan (LFP) initiative, the document also looked at creative ways to illuminate other waterfront structures such as Chicago’s bridges, Civic Opera House, and Lower Wacker Drive. As long as the Merchandise Mart “Pez Dispensers” don’t come to life and destroy us all I’ll be fine with it.

“Daylight Saving Time” Is Dumb, Dangerous

Congratulations.  We just lost an hour of our lives and we just CARRY ON LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is not for the benefit of farmers.  It was intended to save energy, but the history of DST says that is debatable.

The time change messes with our sleep cycles.  Numbers show that heart attacks, strokes, and car accidents spike in the days after it happens.  The one last argument you hear is that the economy is stimulated by the extra hours of daylight after work.  Enter Bloomberg, who blows that theory out of the water:

“The study compared Los Angeles with Phoenix in the 30 days after the March and November time changes. Arizona is a natural test case since it’s one of the two states, along with Hawaii, that doesn’t do daylight saving. In the spring, according to the consumer transaction data, the additional hour of evening daylight in Los Angeles managed to slightly boost card spending per person, compared with that in Phoenix, although by less than 1 percent. That spending uptick is swamped by the negative impact of the November time change, which sees the darkened population of Los Angeles spend 3.5 percent less at local retailers.”

So why do we still do this?  We have plenty of traditions in this country that are worth keeping.  This…is not.  — [eric]

BONUS EDIT:  Check out this link to help further my cause.  If we keep change to DST and then keep those hours the same year round, we don’t lose those late-night sunsets we all seem to love.

BONUS BONUS EDIT:  You may not notice, but your body’s internal clock does.  And it might be dangerous.

Hurting? Science Can Lessen Your St. Patrick’s Hangover

Starting yesterday, Chicago started celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.  Hey…we need time to dye our river.  And yes — allow our livers recover.

So apparently the sweet poison of alcohol caught up with your body?  In reality, the only full-proof remedy is to drink conservatively — or not at all.  But thanks to asapSCIENCE (via Lifehacker), here are the ways to Help Handle Your Hangover:

Fatty food, carbs.  Water.  Lighter colored liquors.  More water.  Aspirin (not acetaminophen).  Eggs, banana, fruit juice breakfast.  CHECK.

Now if we didn’t always have selective amnesia every time we tip back.  — [eric]

Happy St. Pat’s! Best Corned Beef Sandwich in Chicago

Corned beef sandwiches, a delicacy we look forward to this time of year at Irish-themed parties, so where do you get the best one?  This proud Southsider who has taken the trains up north but spent many a March Sunday walking on Western Avenue south of 103rd, knows a few spots to hit your corned beef craving. Now of course, we can get into a debate about what has the best.So shoot us a tweet or FB comment about your favorite sandwich spot, especially if they got a killer corned beef because I am getting hungry writing this.

Calabria Imports (1905 W. 103rd St)

When you get fresh cut corned beef, you don’t complain especially when it’s not far from a Metra train or the Southside Irish St. Pat’s Parade route, but add in some homemade fresh cut chips, well you got just we need right there…excuse me, right dare.

Swanson’s Beverly Ritz (2414 W. 103rd St,)

These Southsiders know their meats. I have enjoyed many a sandwich at this Beverly gem which is half a block away from the start of the Southside Irish Parade. It’s worth every bite and you get it made-to-order with mayo, mustard, onions, lettuce, and tomato.

Moon’s Sandich Shop (16 S Western Ave)

This heart-warming diner delivers great dogs and burgers, but when you get a filling and satisfying corned beef to compliment an evening near by at the United Center, you should take advantage of it.

Manny’s (1141 S Jefferson St)

Food writer Steve Dolinsky praised this sandwich shop and the tough customers on Yelp have too. So if it can beat a wide jury of eaters, it has got to be good. They are not wrong. I have had dozens of friend’s rave about the gooey cheese dressing over well cut meats from Manny’s.

Eleven City (1112 S Wabash Ave)

Bringing the goods from the South Loop, this eatery has been a go-to for commuters and college students near by at Columbia. A sandwich that stands tall next potato salad and a pickle with a proud tooth pick flag waving it’s glory is what you will find waiting for here.
