Fatso’s Last Stand

When it’s hard to drag yourself out of a self-inflicted fog, head to ketchup and mustard-colored Fatso’s Last Stand for a no-fuss double char-dog and fries. This no-frills Ukrainian Village haunt features plenty of outdoor seating so you can breathe in some fresh air, as well as options like fried shrimp, smashburgers and a thick-cut, griddled salami sandwich that are up to the task.

Fatso’s Last Stand is at 2258 W. Chicago Ave.

Don Pedro Carnitas

While it won’t score high marks for its fluorescent-lit, bare-bones décor or its small, accident-waiting-to-happen parking lot, Don Pedro Carnitas more than makes up for its setting with a near-perfect, by-the-pound rendition of its namesake as well as juicy, sloppy beef barbacoa. Snake your way between the dual lines up front and snag a rickety table, where you can quickly prep tacos from the platter of meat put before you, topping them with pico de gallo and a spurt of lime.

Don Pedro Carnitas is at 1113 W. 18th St.

Ruby’s Fast Food

Hit the cash station before heading to Ruby’s Fast Food, a counter-serve Filipino fave with a cafeteria-style, steam-table approach called turo-turo (point point). Although temptations abound, you’d be wise to settle on the zingy chicken adobo, deep-fried lechon kawali and slightly sweet spaghetti stippled with hot dogs. Or the fried rice. Or the shatteringly crispy pata. Or the tapsilog. You get the idea.

Ruby’s Fast Food is at 3740 W. Montrose Ave.

Johnnie’s Beef

Day in and day out, locals shuffle through the line at Johnnie’s Beef for one good reason: a perfect, destination-worthy rendition of the Chicago-style classic. Do yourself (and your aching head) a favor and make it a beef and sausage combo, juicy, topped with sweet and hot peppers — plus a hydrating cup of lemon Italian ice. Just be sure to have your order ready since indecision at this legendary stand is met with indignation at best.

Johnnie’s Beef is at 7500 W. North Ave., Elmwood Park.

Longman and Eagle

Longman & Eagle

Hip, inviting and farm-to-table in approach, Longman & Eagle delivers comfort in the form of a pseudo-classic two eggs up platter. Only here, eggs come with house-made maple-glazed Spam, crispy potatoes and an ice-cold PBR. Pork belly Benedict, sunny-side duck hash and fried chicken and waffles are among the alternatives. Adding to the appeal, a handful of rooms upstairs are built for those who need to sleep it off.

Longman & Eagle is at 2657 N. Kedzie Ave.

Question…How Do You Have Sex In Outer Space?

Let’s talk about sex (…baby).
To be more specific, we need to have a serious talk about sex in outer space.
Immediately, certain things — and images, perhaps — come to mind.  Coordinating spacesuit openings, for one.  And gravity?  How exactly does gravity play a part in afternoon delight?  If in a bent position, I could also imagine one could see more than just the fifty states from orbit.
But in all seriousness, this article from FiveThirtyEight is a must read — the lack of research into reproduction in space is a serious hurdle if we want to move elsewhere.  Say, Mars.  Or even the new TRAPPIST-1 system.  Two big areas that concern scientists are radiation — 99% of which is normally blocked by the Earth’s atmosphere — and what the lack of gravity does to the female reproductive system.
We don’t make it off the third rock from sun until we figure this out.  So it is my official political stance that humanity should be getting this…on.  Bow-chick-a-wow-wow.  Hubba hubba.  —@erickristensen

A Real Life “Los Pollos Hermanos” At SXSW

Austin is full on into South by Southwest (SXSW) this week…and wouldn’t you know it?  Los Pollos Hermanos did a pop-up shop, bringing to life the famous chicken joint from Breaking Bad.  While the restaurant was recreated in excruciating detail down to the menu items, the only they were serving up were curly fries, dipping sauce, and water.  That didn’t stop fans from flocking to the promo location (more on that in a moment).

Look who else showed up:

That’s right.  Bob Odenkirk and Giancarlo Esposito, who played Saul Goodman and Gus Fringer in the series.  Their appearance plus the restaurant happened to promote their spin-off show, Better Call Saul.

Now if they would have JUST gotten Hector, his wheelchair, and that damn bell…it would have been perfect — [eric]

Don Draper’s Heinz ad is now a real thing

(from avclub.com)

The Mad Men season-six episode “To Have and to Hold“ saw Don Draper and Peggy Olson competing for the Heinz account with very different campaigns. While Peggy went with something more product-oriented, Don created ads that had no ketchup bottles in sight, telling the Heinz folks that their name was so inextricably linked to the condiment that consumers would have no trouble conjuring up the missing bottle in their heads. They passed on it, because Kip Pardue had little imagination, but now the real Heinz is bringing the fictional campaign to life.

Netflix binge-watching guide

(from chicagotribune.com)

Though we were blessed with a pretty tame January and February, March is shaping up to be a blistery mess of snow and freezing temps. Even if you thought the days of posting up the couch were behind you, you can still make the best of them and finally watch all of the Netflix you missed out on when it was 70 degrees in the dead of winter.

“Love” (Season 2)

The second installment in Judd Apatow‘s anti-love story comedy landed on Netflix on March 10 and follows Mickey and Gus as they try to navigate what exactly is going on between them. If you need to play catch up, Season 1 is still streaming and only has ten episodes (and features an episode from Chicago’s own Joe Swanberg), so why not give it a go as the inches pile up outside? MUSE in the studio with 3 new songs recorded

One of the biggest bands in the world MUSE are set to tour this summer with 30 Seconds to Mars and PVRIS, so it was extra exciting when NME reported today that the UK rock titans are in the studio with 3 new songs already recorded. A fan caught up with the trio near at the AIR Studio in London this week and asked them what was up while snapping a selfie for Instagram. Two of the songs were described as “heavy” and the other one not so much. MUSE had previously recorded the albums ‘Absolution’, ‘The 2nd Law’ and ‘Drones’ in the same spot. So we can all drool out of our collective mouths to see what epic jams the band is currently creating.

Check out MUSE performing the track ‘Reapers’ off the ‘Drones’ album in Cologne, Germany in 2015.

Plan to light up Chicago’s Merchandise Mart is moving forward

(from chicago.curbed.com)

Home to wholesale decorating showrooms, art galleries, and a technology incubator, Chicago’s 4 million square foot Merchandise Mart is preparing to take on yet another role as a giant projection screen. According to the Chicago Tribune, the iconic 1928 Art Deco building will host projected, multimedia art along its nearly three-acre, river-facing southern facade beginning in 2018. The possibility of utilizing the Merchandise Mart as an artistic canvas was first revealed back in 2014 as part of a preliminary study conducted by the Mayor’s Office and Choose Chicago to light the Chicago River and boost tourism. Known as the Lighting Framework Plan (LFP) initiative, the document also looked at creative ways to illuminate other waterfront structures such as Chicago’s bridges, Civic Opera House, and Lower Wacker Drive. As long as the Merchandise Mart “Pez Dispensers” don’t come to life and destroy us all I’ll be fine with it.
