Daniel Day Lewis is widely regarded as one of the greatest film actors of all time. From ‘Gangs of New York’ to ‘The Last of the Mohicans’, he has displayed a trans-formative power on screen that very few posses. When DDL is in a movie, he is the character he’s portraying. So it was sad to read today according to Variety, that Day Lewis is retiring from acting at the age of 60.
In a statement, Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, confirmed the news: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. ” He goes out on top with a career spanning four decades and four Oscar awards on his mantle place. His last movie an untitled drama has already been filmed, and will see Day Lewis collaborate again with the well regarded Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed Day-Lewis to a best actor Oscar in 2007’s “There Will Be Blood.
My personal favorite role of Lewis’s is his performance in the emotional drama ‘In the Name of Father’ where he played Gerry Conlon, an Irish man who is believed to have committed a pub bombing with his father and is jailed by English officials.
Sunday was a month since he left. Sunday was also the first father’s day his children spent without him.
Chris Cornell’s daughter Toni wrote him a beautifully heart-breaking letter on his facebook page, copied below:
Daddy,
Let me start by saying how much I love you and how much you mean to me. You are my idol, someone I’ve always looked up to. You were always there for me. You pushed me forward every day, and you still do.
Whenever I cry or feel like there’s no way I can go on, I hear your voice, “Don’t sit worrying peanut. Worry is a waste of time, I’m ok.”
I always took what you said to heart. Probably because everything you said was so smart.
Every time you came home from tour you spent all your hours with us. No matter how tired you were, how many time zones you traveled, you were there for us.
Whenever I was sick you would take care of me. You would cuddle with me, hug me, kiss me. You didn’t care about getting sick. You would stay up all night to make sure my fever went down. And if it didn’t, you would wake me up and give me my medicine. I would open my eyes, see you, and feel better.
I have so many memories with you but one of my favorite ones was earlier this year when I was jetlagged and we watched ‘Purple Rain ‘. We were staying at the BHH and you came into my room when I was trying to find a movie to watch.
“How about Purple Rain?” you said. I always trusted your judgement. I put it on and immediately fell in love! We then got to your favorite song, ‘The Beautiful Ones’.
“This song is so special it doesn’t even belong in a genre. When I was in my twenties, I saw this in the theatre and some guy started cracking up laughing at this scene and song. It got me really mad, ” you said.
I fell in love with the song too and listened to it on repeat.
Our special connection was always the arts. Poems, books, music, writing. We both have a unconditional love for it.
Who’s going to introduce me to movies like ‘Purple Rain’ and songs like ‘The Beautiful Ones’ now? I’m hoping I will find some because you trained me so well.
I know you are still here, and the warmth I feel beneath the cold, is you.
YOU ARE THE BEST FATHER IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. And I know, that if this wasn’t an accident, you’d still be cuddling with me watching ‘Purple Rain’.
I love you and miss you so, Daddy. You deserve your own day to be celebrated because you are the best dad anyone could ever have. Happy Father’s Day!
Love,
Your Baby Toni

Mattell, the company behind the Barbie dolls announced this week they are adding more diversity in look and style to their upcoming dolls. The new male dolls will feature a variety of different body types including one many speculate is a ‘dad bod’ and of course, a doll in tank top with a man bun. Is that last one going to be in line for beer at Lollapalooza?
Another point that’s worth noting in these new updates is ethnic diversity which is a positive thing for children to learn when playing.
According to a report in USA Today, Mattell will release 15 new types of Ken dolls with the new looks. it is the biggest update to long running doll line in 56 years. The new toys will be available on July 8th. “By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation,” said Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and general manager of Barbie.
Comedian Amy Schumer was set to play the roll of the doll with it all ‘Barbie’ in a live action film earlier this year, but she dropped out in March. The planned movie is set to be released next Summer.
On her Comedy Central series, Schumer spoofed the doll toy craze with a sketch that our Moms would likely describe as ‘inappropriate’.

Chris Cornell’s family has recently used his Facebook page to post moving messages and tributes to the late great singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave. Cornell’s daughters Lily and Toni both posted some very moving messages on a Father’s Day weekend. You can read more from the Cornell family here on Chris Cornell’s facebook page.
Cornell’s final music video made it’s way online this weekend. The song ‘”The Promise” was written for a 2016 historical film about refugees in a love triangle.
Daft Punk is known that robot headed duel kings of dance music with their aesthetic of technology meets humanity clouding their real faces and the group’s music is delightfully none-organic. Radio Dance Orchestra, a 15-piece orchestra took Daft Punk’s definitive hip-shaker ‘Harder, Better, Fester’ on the German late night TV show Neo Magazin Royale. It’s a truly imaginative take of a very funky song while never losing it’s original flare, yet sounding fresh.
Now if Daft Punk could dust off the robot heads and get out of the work shop for some live shows, that would be exciting. Daft Punk last a did a full tour in 2007 including a headlining set at Lollapalooza in Grant Park in downtown Chicago. They certainly stayed busy making music including their very successful ‘Randon Access Memories’ which won the band a Grammy Award a few years back.
Twenty-One Pilot’s Tyler Joseph while headlining the Firefly Festival this past weekend went after the big West Coast fest, Coachella. The Clique in attendance at Firefly in Delaware roared when he said he favored them over the California masses of the Coachella. “It’s not that we don’t like Coachella, it’s just that we can’t stand it.” said Joseph. TMZ captured the specific moment during TOP’s set on Friday night.
Based in Coachella Valley, the fest takes place at the Empire Pollo Club and has grown to become one of the biggest music festivals in the world while also being far from the nearest major city. It has attracted thousands from around the world, with many buying tickets before each year’s lineup is even announced.
Will Ferrell is on the promo tour for his upcoming film ‘The House’ and last night was a goofing with the recently mustached Jimmy Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show’ in a facial hair faceoff with comedic results. You can just tell these two ‘Saturday Night Live’ alums have joked so organically with each other off camera, so simply mining a fake mustache for real sincere laughs is no biggy.
Here is the trailer for ‘The House’ starring Ferrell and Amy Poehler as two financially strapped parents who start an illegal casino in their suburban home to send their daughter to college.
So many Foo things!! Their ninth studio album ‘Concrete and Gold’ will be out Sept. 15th and if you pre-order it you will have access to special fan presales on tour dates (which do not include a Chicago date, yet…)
I love this presale-fan access to tickets deal, QOTSA just did the same on their tour with Royal Blood. One step closer to fighting the bots and scalpers!!
Here’s a letter from Dave <3
