Michael Phelps vs Shark Week

( from consequenceofsound.net)

One has more Olympic gold medals than any athlete in history; the other has a series of Hollywood thrillers with depreciating returns based on their species. This summer, Michael Phelps and a great white shark will enter the water for the race of their lives. Yes, world-class athlete star Phelps will attempt to out swim one of nature’s fastest, deadliest creatures in a made-for-TV competition for the ages. The event will be part of Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week, which kicks off July 23rd. (MORE HERE)

Does the Shark even know he’s in a competition? What does Michael Phelps need to prove?

Moments that give every Chicagoan anxiety

(from timeout.com)

While Chicago offers more than a few ways to relax (pristine beaches and outdoor bars), living in any big city can be stressful. From taking the CTA every day to “dibs” to the sheer number of summer festivals, there are tons of little triggers that make Chicagoans inexplicably anxious. Here are a few of them. Which ones are the most relatable to you?

When all your friends start getting married and moving to RavenswoodAnd on that note…

When your friends buy an actual free-standing home and you wonder where you went wrong. A literal house.

Leaving your apartment during Lollapalooza weekend. Like, at all.

When you’re always one year and one neighborhood behind the “cool neighborhood” that all your friends live in. Good thing I just signed a two-year lease in Wicker Park.

When you secretly love ketchup. Don’t you dare tell a soul.

When you end up at a cash-only bar with no ATM. Extra points if you’ve already ordered the drinks.

Spending the entire month of October waiting for the temperature to drop. Will it ever be warm again?

When the timer on your CTA bus app randomly jumps up five minutes. K, guess I’m sprinting for the bus now. Cool.

The moment you realize you’re old enough to be a parent to Lollapalooza’s target demographic. This is fine. Everything is fine.

When your co-worker invites you to his improv show. Literally anything could happen.

The split-second after you tap your (potentially valueless) Ventra card. Please, please, please…

Anytime a Chicago-based team makes its way to a championship game. Even if you don’t care about sports, the entire city gets real stressed out.

The day before you realize that those sonic booms are rehearsal for the Air and Water ShowAh, the annual fear of immediate nuclear war.

When everyone’s like, “Yaaaas it’s spring!” but it’s still 40 degrees out. Am I…supposed to…feel warm? And even worse…

When people start wearing flip-flops and cargo shorts in March. NO. Just no.

Deciding whether or not the train operator can be trusted when he says he has an immediate follower. It’s the lie that keeps society afloat.

When you have friends in town who *need* to try deep-dish pizza. What if they hate it?

When you get an itch on your leg and are convinced you have bed bugs. Yep, that’s it, burning all my clothes now.

Couple Donates $100,000 To Goodwill … By Accident

A couple in Ohio accidentally dropped off a duffel bag containing almost $100,000 at an Ohio Goodwill. Thanks to a couple of honest employees, they got back every dime. The employees at the Zanesville, Ohio, Goodwill were going through donations last week when they came across a duffel bag. Inside the bag was $97,004, a living will and marriage certificate. At first they thought the cash was fake, employee Kelsey Croy told CNN. “It was so much cash they figured it was fake at first and then thought, ‘Well no, maybe it’s actually counterfeit money,'” Croy said. “So they brought it into the store office. “I looked in the bag and we counted it right there on the desk. And it was $97,004.” Thankfully, the owners asked for a receipt for tax purposes when they dropped off the goods that morning. The employees immediately called the couple but no one answered. Not wanting to leave that amount of cash in the store, they called in the Zanesville Police Department and it was eventually returned to the owners.  The couple told police their bank was closing. So, they withdrew all their money to move it to another bank. On the way to the new bank, they stopped at Goodwill to drop off a bag of clothes. That’s how the money ended up there. READ MORE

Daniel Day Lewis retires from acting

Daniel Day Lewis is widely regarded as one of the greatest film actors of all time. From ‘Gangs of New York’ to ‘The Last of the Mohicans’, he has displayed a trans-formative power on screen that very few posses. When DDL is in a movie, he is the character he’s portraying. So it was sad to read today according to Variety, that Day Lewis is retiring from acting at the age of 60.

In a statement, Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, confirmed the news: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. ” He goes out on top with a career spanning four decades and four Oscar awards on his mantle place. His last movie an untitled drama has already been filmed, and will see Day Lewis collaborate again with the well regarded Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed Day-Lewis to a best actor Oscar in 2007’s “There Will Be Blood.

My personal favorite role of Lewis’s is his performance in the emotional drama ‘In the Name of Father’ where he played Gerry Conlon, an Irish man who is believed to have committed a pub bombing with his father and is jailed by English officials.

Toni Cornell’s letter to Chris for Father’s Day

Sunday was a month since he left.  Sunday was also the first father’s day his children spent without him.

Chris Cornell’s daughter Toni wrote him a beautifully heart-breaking letter on his facebook page, copied below:

Daddy,

Let me start by saying how much I love you and how much you mean to me. You are my idol, someone I’ve always looked up to. You were always there for me. You pushed me forward every day, and you still do.

Whenever I cry or feel like there’s no way I can go on, I hear your voice, “Don’t sit worrying peanut. Worry is a waste of time, I’m ok.”

I always took what you said to heart. Probably because everything you said was so smart.

Every time you came home from tour you spent all your hours with us. No matter how tired you were, how many time zones you traveled, you were there for us.

Whenever I was sick you would take care of me. You would cuddle with me, hug me, kiss me. You didn’t care about getting sick. You would stay up all night to make sure my fever went down. And if it didn’t, you would wake me up and give me my medicine. I would open my eyes, see you, and feel better.

I have so many memories with you but one of my favorite ones was earlier this year when I was jetlagged and we watched ‘Purple Rain ‘. We were staying at the BHH and you came into my room when I was trying to find a movie to watch.

“How about Purple Rain?” you said. I always trusted your judgement. I put it on and immediately fell in love! We then got to your favorite song, ‘The Beautiful Ones’.

“This song is so special it doesn’t even belong in a genre. When I was in my twenties, I saw this in the theatre and some guy started cracking up laughing at this scene and song. It got me really mad, ” you said.

I fell in love with the song too and listened to it on repeat.

Our special connection was always the arts. Poems, books, music, writing. We both have a unconditional love for it.

Who’s going to introduce me to movies like ‘Purple Rain’ and songs like ‘The Beautiful Ones’ now? I’m hoping I will find some because you trained me so well.

I know you are still here, and the warmth I feel beneath the cold, is you.
YOU ARE THE BEST FATHER IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. And I know, that if this wasn’t an accident, you’d still be cuddling with me watching ‘Purple Rain’.

I love you and miss you so, Daddy. You deserve your own day to be celebrated because you are the best dad anyone could ever have. Happy Father’s Day!

Love,
Your Baby Toni
