Cranberries Singer Dead at 46

Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer of The Cranberries, has died at only 46. There is not a lot of information on what happened. Her publicist said she died in London where she was recording new music. Here’s the article from the BBC.

The band did cancel shows in the United States, including one in Chicago, last year because Dolores was dealing with ongoing back issues.

FAIL: Wisconsin Tries Luring Chicagoans North…Not Sure Their Ads Nail It.

If you are a millennial using the CTA and/or social media, you may have run across ads like this recently — trying to convince you to move to Wisconsin.  The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation has spent about a million dollars trying to convince you to lead your best life across the border.

They are banking hard on their 22 minute average commute time in Milwaukee, and that their urban center can offer just as many amenities as Chicago.  One of their pitches — and I’m deadly serious here — is Lake Michigan.  “Sunset on Michigan (Avenue) or Sunset on (Lake) Michigan?” one of the ad asks.

I now offer my own ad campaign as a rebuttal:

If you need someone to stick up for Chicago, I will.  Always.  — [eric]

So, What Is Dave Grohl Whispering in the Song “Everlong?”

About three minutes into the song Foo Fighters song “Everlong,” everything drops down quiet again — and you can hear a whispering voice.  So, what exactly is Dave Grohl saying?

Radio X isolated the vocals and says this is what you are hearing:

“So Dad would take the Sundays off,
And that’s the only time he could ever get any rest,
And so, because we were loud on Sundays,
He d make us hold his construction boots over our head, till he’d sleep
And they were really heavy boots
And I d used to say dad come on please
And like start crying, cause they’re too heavy.”

However, that’s probably only 33% correct.

According to music folklore, there are actually THREE whisper tracks.  One for the left channel, one for the center channel, and one for the right channel.  They are reportedly of Dave reading out of technical manual, Dave reading a love letter, and finally, Dave reading a story about a studio technician’s father.

It appears the video above would be the last example.

So…any other fellow music nerds up for figuring out what the other two tracks are?  — [eric]

Jeopardy Contestant Misidentifies Jack White…As Eminem

Alright, the questions on Jeopardy! come in rapid succession…and if you don’t know an answer, I *suppose* a good strategy would be to pick up on certain elements of the clue and make an educated guess.

But.  That being said…

While Jack White and Eminem are both indeed from Detroit…that is where the similarity ends.

Jack White is back with new music called Connected By Love.  One interesting fact about this song:  zero guitar.  — [eric]

Facebook changing your news feed again

More changes are coming to Facebook with social media wizard Mark Zuckerberg posting that the platform will be filtering it’s News feed to reduce exposure to brands, media companies, and content publishers.

This is bad for bands and alternative artists that you follow, as this will distance from your feed. On the other hand maybe people will go to another app for that, right?

Zuckerberg’s intentions seem really good but what does it mean to those that have  built a following and are trying to develop a stronger community for music, art, and entertainment? Time will tell us but expect more political posts from that grade school friend who you have not talked to since high school.

Here is Zuckerberg’s complete statement

The Killers show the prison of depression in ‘RUT’ video

Depression sucks. That sound simplistic, but it’s true. It challenges people’s health and their ability to be with others they love and care for. The prison-like feeling of depression and mental illness is on display in the Killer’s new music video for the song , ‘Rut’ off their 2017 hit album ‘Wonderful Wonderful’. The lyrics show someone reaching out from that internal darkness asking that “don’t you give up on me” and when you see the characters on screen facing that same plea it hits new chords.

Chester Bennington’s Widow Planning Birthday Memorial, Asks Fans BIG Favor

Talinda Bennington once again expressed her gratitude for fans leaving gifts in remembrance of the lead singer of Linkin Park.  Just one problem:  people are leaving them at house where he died, which is not occupied by anyone in the family anymore:

Until the Linkin Park family can figure out the location of that memorial, they are asking fans to either leave their gifts at the band’s label, Warner Bros. — or consider making a donation to the One More Light fund.  Which I can totally get behind…because I would like a place of peace to leave remembrances over the place where Chester succumb to his darkness.

In other news:  Talinda says they are planning a special memorial for Chester’s birthday — March 20th.  We’ll keep you posted on that.  — [eric]

James Franco accused of sexual misconduct

Multiple women have accused actor and director James Franco of sexual misconduct in several Twitter posts in the last few days. The accusations follow Franco publicly supporting the #TimesUp movement within the Hollywood film and TV industry to crackdown on sexual misconduct. The ‘Disaster Artist’ star wore a symbolic ‘Times Up’ pin on Sunday during the 75th annual Golden Globes, where he won the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

At this time, Franco has not responded to the allegations which started to grow online in the last 24 hours following the Golden Globes.

Sarah Tither-Kaplan, actress who recently worked on one of Franco’s films also called him out online.

The contempt for Franco winning an award and appearing this week’s Golden Globes complicates this issue is also being expressed.

Consequence of Sound and the Independent also have the latest updates on this story as it develops.

HEY ROBOT! Go get me a beer!

The annual Consumer Electronic Show is going down this week with all of the big tech companies like Sony, Google, and Samsung rolling out the latest innovations in everything from gaming, televisions, and more. There is still a lot of developers showing off other gadgets and gizmos (sound like someone’s dad right?) like this robot we’ve been waiting for: the robot that gets you a beer from the fridge.

The beer-bot can also get your floor cleaned with a vacuum as well?!  How do we get one of these at Windy City Brewhaha on March 10th? ( Get your tickets for that here) This robot will be on sale later this year but it won’t be cheap, with the estimated cost around what it would cost for an overseas family vacation.

The Verge also covered other exciting new devices from CES like a shirts you can wear as  controller in video games.
