Eddie Vedder covers Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Hurt’

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder was in Brazil last night, and he covered a lot of different artists while on stage, including Warren Zevon, John Lennon and Pink Floyd. He also busted out Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.”

Check out some fan footage of Reznor-by-way-of-Vedder:

Looks like it was taken down for copyright issues, but here is an older version of the dame cover:

Synthetic pot causing Illinois residents to bleed from eyes, ears

Here’s something you don’t see every day: Synthetic marijuana users in Illinois have been reported to experience bleeding from their eyes and ears. A formal state-wide warning was put out, letting residents know that 22 people who used synthetic pot recently have reported “severe external bleeding.”

K2… Spice… fake weed… Bombay Blue… whatever your synthetic cannabinoid, IT COULD MAKE YOU BLEED OUT OF YOUR EYEBALLS IF YOU USE IT (to say nothing of its illegality in Illinois). And as “metal” as bleeding out of your eyes may sound, it probably doesn’t feel awesome.

NEW MUSIC ALERT! Listen CHVRCHES’s ‘Never Say Die’

CHVRCHES have released yet new track “Never Say Die’ from their forthcoming album ‘Love Is Dead’ last night on Youtube. The song has a powerful creschendo before the chrorus  feeling really dramatic, but has this pogoing up and down vocal performance from singer Lauren Mayberry.

The song follows the synth banger ‘Get Out’ and  the duet ‘My Enemy’ which features Matt Bernirnger.

‘Never Say Die’ continues Mayberry’s lyrical bitterness of what sounds like the end of a relationship with words of former friend/lovers ringing in her head.

‘Love Is Dead’ comes out May 25th, and is shaping up to be the alternative album of 2018. If that was enough the Scottish dance alt band has recently had their covers of Beyonce and the 1975 delight us.

How much are YOU gonna spend on the Cubs and Sox?

It’s opening day for MLB and our Cubs and Sox . . . so if you love sitting through four hours of commentary for 12 minutes of action, get PUMPED.

Custom Ink did a study on Opening Day, looking at everything from season ticket prices to how much hot dogs are, and ranked each team according to how much it costs if you’re a DIE-HARD fan. You can see the full results here.

Northsiders, The Cubs are the most expensive team this year . . . just under $16,000 if you went to every single home game. Southsider’s, you’re Sox are one of the CHEAPEST teams, at just under $5,500. That includes the tickets, parking, food, drinks and jersey followed by a good ol’ Bridgeport ass kicking.

The three most expensive teams are the Cubs at $15,723 . . . Red Sox, $12,712 . . . and Yankees, $12,547. The three CHEAPEST are the Angels, $4,521 . . . White Sox, $5,452 . . . and Rays,
$5,502.

The average for all 30 teams is just under $8,000 to see every home game live . . . and the average ticket price is about $65. The average price of a jersey is $125 . . . a hat, $16 . . . a beer, $5.90 . . . a soda, $4.13 . . . a hot dog, $4.52 . . . and $16 for parking.

Another study looked at all the GIVEAWAYS each team has this year . . . things like free hats and bobbleheads.

The teams giving out the most free stuff are the Cardinals, Dodgers, Cubs, Mets, and Pirates. The bottom five are the Marlins, A’s, Diamondbacks, Red Sox, and Phillies.

The term “immediate family members” includes spouses, parents and step-parents, siblings and step-siblings, and children and stepchildren. The term “household members” refers to people who share the same residence at least three (3) months out of the year. The Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Participation constitutes entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to these Official Rules and Station’s decisions, which are final and binding in all matters related to the Contest. Winning a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.
  3. Contest Period. The Contest will begin at 12:00 pm CT on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 and will run through 11:59 am CT on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 (the “Contest Period”).  The Station’s computer is the official time keeping device for this Contest.

(i)  Online: Visit the Station’s website www.101wkqx.com during the Contest Period, click on the “Contest” link, click on the “AWR in the Lounge” Contest link, and complete an entry form.  All entries must be received by 11:59 am CT on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 to be eligible for the Grand Prize drawing.  Limit one (1) entry per person per email address.  Multiple participants are not permitted to share the same email address. Any attempt by any participant to submit more than one (1) entry per day by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations and logins, or any other methods will void that entry and the participant may be disqualified.  Use of any automated system to participate is prohibited and will result in disqualification. Station is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, unintelligible, inappropriate or misdirected registrations, all of which will be disqualified.  In the event of a dispute as to any registration, the authorized account holder of the email address used to register will be deemed to be the participant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned the telephone number by the wireless carrier or an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted address.  Potential winner may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder. All entries become the sole and exclusive property of Station and will not be returned.  Station reserves the right to contact entrants and all other individuals whose email address is submitted as part of this promotion.  No mail-in entries will be accepted.

  1. Winner Selection. At approximately 1:00 pm CT on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, Station will select ten (10) entries for the Grand Prize in a random drawing from among all valid entries received by Station during the Contest Period.  The winning entrant will be contacted using the email address and/or telephone number provided with the entry and may be awarded the prize (subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these rules). Station’s decisions as to the administration and operation of the Contest and the selection of the potential winner are final and binding in all matters related to the Contest.  Failure to respond to the initial verification contact within three (3) days of notification will result in disqualification.
  2. Verification of Potential Winner. THE ELIGIBILITY OF ALL POTENTIAL CONTEST WINNERS IS SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY STATION WHOSE DECISIONS ARE FINAL AND BINDING IN ALL MATTERS RELATED TO THE CONTEST. The potential winner must continue to comply with all terms and conditions of these Official Rules, and winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements. The potential winner may be notified by email and/or telephone call after the date of random drawing and/or winner determination. The potential winner will be required to sign and return to Station, within three (3) days of the date notice is sent, an affidavit of eligibility and a liability/publicity release (except where prohibited) in order to claim his/her prize, if applicable.  A winner who returns the affidavit of eligibility and liability/publicity release will be deemed to have accepted the contest prize and thereafter will not be permitted to rescind their acceptance of the prize and/or return the prize. If a potential winner cannot be contacted, fails to sign and return the affidavit of eligibility and/or the liability/publicity release within the required time period (if applicable), or if the prize or prize notification is returned as undeliverable, potential winner forfeits prize. In the event that the potential winner of a prize is disqualified for any reason, Station may award the applicable prize to an alternate winner by random drawing from among all remaining eligible entries.
  3. Grand Prize. Ten (10) Grand Prizes will be awarded in this Contest.  Each Grand Prize is two (2) passes to see AJR in the Lounge perform on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the Station’s studios, 455 N. CityFront Plaza, Chicago, IL 60611. Winner is responsible for all taxes associated with prize receipt and/or use.  Odds of winning the Grand Prize depend on a number of factors including the number of eligible entries received during the Contest Period and listeners participating at any given time.

There is no substitution, transfer, or cash equivalent for prizes, except that the Station may, at its sole discretion and to the extent permitted by law, substitute prizes of comparable value or cash.  The prizes are expressly limited to the item(s) listed above and do not include taxes, gratuities or any other expenses.  Any tickets and/or gift certificates/cards awarded as part of a prize will be subject to the terms and conditions set forth by the issuer and are valid only on the date(s) printed on the tickets or gift certificates/cards.  Other restrictions may apply.

Station reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, Station reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Station’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.
  5. Limitations of Liability. The Released Parties are not responsible for: (1) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Station, entrants, printing errors or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest; (2) technical failures of any kind, including but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (3) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Contest; (4) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Contest or the processing of entries; or (5) any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant’s participation in the Contest or receipt or use, non-use or misuse of any prize. 6. Entrant agrees that: (i) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; (ii) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved exclusively by the United States District Court or the appropriate state court located in the Station’s listening area; (iii) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering this Contest, but in no event attorneys’ fees; and (iv) under no circumstances will entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and entrant hereby waives all rights to claim punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses, and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of entrant and Station in connection with the Contest, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the state in which the Station is located, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the state in which the Station is located or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the state in which the Station is located.

Bullying rates have plummeted in the last decade

Bullying shows itself in a number of ways: Making fun of someone; calling them names or insulting them; spreading rumors; threatening with harm; pushing, shoving, tripping or spitting on someone; pressuring someone to do something they don’t want to do; excluding someone from activities on purpose; destroying property; etc.

We’ve all seen it, been around it and perhaps even been hurt by it. With that, comes some good news: Bullying dropped by more than a third between 2007-2015… and kids are more likely these days to tell an adult if they’re being bullied. These stats come from the Department of Education, which also reports 7% of kids have been called a hateful word; that’s down from 10%.

2018 Guaranteed Rate Field Upgrades: Cuban Burgers, VR Experiences, and Expanded Netting

By Cat Garcia

Every year as a new baseball season begins, fans are not just greeted with the promise of a rejuvenated ball club, but with the offer of new and exciting ballpark experiences.

On Tuesday, Guaranteed Rate Field rolled out a list of new features that will be welcomed at the ballpark when it opens to fans on April 5. Here are some things to look out for

New Ballpark Food Offerings

Guaranteed Rate Field has been well known for offering an eclectic and delicious menagerie of food not only on their ballpark concourse, but also in other areas of the ballpark including their Diamond Suites, Guaranteed Rate Club, and Huntington Bank Stadium club.

This year, the White Sox culinary team has rolled out a variety of mouthwatering new options including hand-scooped ice cream served in homemade waffle cones, a variety of new Johnsonville specialty sausages with unique pitch-inspired names, the Cutter, the Slurve and the Cutter, a unique and healthier option — The Pozole Salad — along with more of your favorite hearty options including Provolone-stuffed dough balls, Buffalo Chicken Empanadas and more.

The most unique addition to the concourse menu though has to be the Cuban Burger. The Cuban Burger pays homage to the Guaranteed Rate Field classic Cuban sandwich that has held popular residence at the ballpark since 2014, but does so with an American twist. Served on a traditional hamburger bun, the Cuban Burger is a juicy all-beef Glenmark patty topped with flavorful pulled pork carnitas, sliced ham, Swiss Cheese, mojo sauce, yellow mustard and finished off with a pickle. This sandwich is certainly a must-try at the ballpark in 2018.

The White Sox will bringing the popular Craft Kave, the ballparks curation of local and craft beers, to a newly renovated space near Section 542. Among the new selection of beers are Allagash White, Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout, various brews from Pipeworks Brewing, Brickstone McCormick Place ale, and others.

Expanded Netting and New Retired Numbers Display

As mandated by Major League Baseball on February 1, all 30 MLB ballparks were to expand their protective netting past the dugouts for the safety of all ballpark patrons. On Tuesday, the White Sox gave an up close look at the newly expanded netting that has been installed.

In addition to the netting, other on-field upgrades include newly relocated retired number displays. Previously players retired numbers were displayed above home plate. However, the White Sox have expanded the LED ribbon to extend around the entire facade, and have relocated the numbers along the sides of right and left field. The new display is a simple and very tasteful way to bring fans attention to these players and their lasting legacies, which were previously in a small, concentrated space.

Virtual Reality Batting Cage Experience

The funnest addition to the ballpark campus in the coming season certainly has to be the new Virtual Reality Batting Cage that is located across the street from the ballpark on the first level of the Chicago Sports Depot. Tucked away in the back corner with a view of the street, the batting cage offers fans the opportunity to test out the VR technology that has previously only been available to access at the All-Star Game and other MLB fan events. Guaranteed Rate Field is one of the first major league parks to offer this experience. Stepping into the batting cage, fans will place the VR headset on and be given 90 seconds to swing for the fences all while experiencing the reality of beautiful Guaranteed Rate Field, complete with fan cheering. The VR experience will be open on game days from the time gates open until the final out of the game.

Facebook archives: A walk through your (shockingly detailed) history

With all the press about Facebook and the information it’s been capturing, I decided to go through the process myself. It starts in “Settings.” From there, you can click the “download a copy” link.

You’re then prompted to confirm that you really want this info. Like, really, really want it:

I confirmed that I did, in fact, want to see my archive. After confirmation, I was sent an email saying it might take a while for the info to be compiled, and that I’d get a follow-up once it was ready. The whole process took 20 minutes. The download is neatly organized:

Everything is easy to find in the html folder, as the various subcategories (e.g. ads, friends, etc.) open up in a browser window. Clicking on “photos” in HTML rolled out all my images:

The stuff I knowingly posted on Facebook came as no surprise, to the point where I didn’t see much need to scroll through it all. One of the things that has people flipping out is the list of “Ads Topics” that are used to target you. There are  plenty of head-scratchers in my list, but some are dead on:

“Goat” and “Tricycle” are fantastic. I’d love to know which advertisers are looking for someone with those two characteristics.

Beyond the “Ads Topics” list is a a list of every ad you’ve ever clicked on. Yeah, no surprise (shout out to local band Bury Me In Lights!):

It gets creepier at the bottom: Advertisers with your contact info.

I don’t know why Bed Bath & Beyond and Brave New Look (which is what, exactly?) have my info, but…

As for my contacts, I never enabled Facebook to capture my calls and texts, but it sure has a record of every one of my friend’s phone numbers:

Tim’s obviously my ICE contact, so I don’t need Facebook for reference.

Check it out for yourself. See you at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Welcome to Pothole, U.S.A.

Now that winter’s behind us, it’s time for a time-honored local tradition: Chicago’s annual “fixing of the potholes.” The city announced the first 135 miles of streets that’ll be resurfaced this year. Here are some of the big ones:

  • Stony Island Avenue from S. Doty Avenue to E. 122nd Street (2.4 miles)
  • South Chicago Avenue 67th Street to 79th Street (1.4 miles)
  • Ashland Avenue from 63rd Street to 71st Street (1 mile)
  • Loomis Avenue 59th Street to 74th Street (1.9 miles)
  • 47th Street from Western Avenue to Racine Avenue (1.5 miles)
  • California Avenue from 47th Street to 51st Street (0.5 mile)
  • Harrison Street from Pulaski Road to Kedzie Avenue (1 mile)
  • Halsted Street from Roosevelt Road to Harrison Street (0.5 mile)
  • Cicero Avenue from Grand Avenue to Division Street (0.8 miles)
  • Central Park Avenue from Lake Street to Roosevelt Road (1.3 miles)
  • Caldwell Avenue from Touhy Avenue to Devon Avenue (1.5 miles)
  • Cicero Avenue from Irving Park Road to Grand Avenue (2.75 miles)

CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) says it hopes to repave at least 275 miles before the year’s over. And then they get to do it all over again next year.

Apple To “Phase Out” Music Downloads On iTunes

Apple is set to end music downloads off iTunes in the future, according Apple Music executive Jimmy Iovine who confirmed they would be “phased out” in an interview with the BBC. In the same interview, Iovine complained that music services nowadays are “too similar”. The longtime music mogul also teased “something’s gotta give” with music streaming as the services like Apple Music and Spotify are all priced the same and offer virtually the same music on each service.

Iovine is a really interesting figure in music who has been a part of some biggest critical moments in music over the last few decades. He has worked as a engineer on several big hit albums, and worked his way up to become the best music executives. He has worked with John Lennon, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and partnered with Dr. Dre on Beats headphones which evolved into his current role with Apple. Check out this in-depth interview with Iovine where he speaks with Complex about his work ethic and his experiences with some of the biggest names in rock and rap.
