Maroon 5 will play the next Super Bowl, but…it feels like we are SOOO close on getting to see your Fighters of Foo perform at halftime.
Dave Grohl said in an interview this week that YES…conversations happened about getting the Foo Fighters to play. But they apparently just….didn’t go anywhere. Here’s what he had to say:
“I’ve had multiple conversations over the years with them where they say, ‘We want to have a rock and roll band. Do you think you could do it? Do you think you could do a stadium? I was like, yeah man, we do it all the time. You get so close. And you think, Oh my God, I think we’re going to do the Super Bowl, and then it’ll be Madonna or Katy Perry.”
Well, at least the NFL isn’t saying NO. They just haven’t said….YES. Fingers crossed that one day they will. —- [eric]

Five first place finishes, two silvers, and three bronze medals. Chicago took home some hardware in the Great American Beer Festival this weekend in Denver.
Here’s a list of all the local winners. Try them all and support local brewing. But you know, don’t try them all at once. And while you are at it, you should try 101WKQX’s very own beer — Q Street. It’s an Alternative-style IPA from Church Street. — [eric]

In a recent Instagram Q &A, Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan praised Billy Joe Armstrong and Green Day. “BJ is up there with the greats, for sure,” said Corgan in response to a question about the East Bay punk alt pioneers. He went on to say that Armstrong was as important to 90’s music as Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.
On a question about the impact of Green Day’s classic ‘American Idiot’ album, Corgan stated “If we are talking about guitar-driven music that reached the masses, yes,” he said. “And that album was what, 14 years ago?”

After creating one of the most defining albums of the 90’s, Nirvana traveled to Cannon Falls, Minnesota to record their follow up with Chicago recording legend Steve Albini. They recorded In Utero in a mere 14 days!! When released, the album was banned in Wal-Mart and Kmart because of the song title “Rape Me” which was changed to “Waif Me” on a special version for these stores. (Now that I think of it, I believe we had to edit our Darkest Days album for Wal-Mart because of language too.)
The album went on to sell over 15 million copies worldwide, debuting at #1 on the Billboard Top 200.
Some albums tend to sound dated over time. Not this one. If it’s been a while since you’ve given this album a listen, crank it up this weekend (and maybe sing happy birthday to it at the end).
Here’s the video for the first single off the record “Heart Shaped Box”, directed by Anton Corbijn.

Director Todd Phillips released this clip that shows acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker in a camera test for an upcoming DC comic book film. The entire clip shows Phoenix as a normal person who is revealed to be the creepy villainous clown who terrorizes Gotham City. Now let’s all make wild comparisons with this morsel to the legendary Joker performance of Heath Ledger in ‘the Dark Knight’. The song used is fitting with the Guess Who’s “Laughing”.
The hype for this movie which will have many genre fans salivating with anticipation, continued today with a trailer that reveals this film will revovle around the origins of the character. Now more test footage has made it’s way online with Phoenix interacting with a clown on the street with no audio of the dialogue.
Now before we got to see the makeup and the cryptic grin, we simply got a long haired picture of Phoenix. Conan poked fun at the whole thing.
Not going to lie, this one hit me square in the feels, especially the first lyric…

If you have trouble motivating yourself to get up off the couch to get stuff done, it’s not a sign you’re lazy. It’s a sign that you’re HUMAN.
According to a study by evolutionary biologists from the University of British Columbia in Canada, it turns out we’re all HARDWIRED to be LAZY.
So when you DO get motivated to do stuff, your brain has to work extra hard and use lots of energy to overcome human nature.
But why are we built to be lazy? Because it helps our bodies save energy . . . and for ancient humans, that was a big advantage, because it meant you could use your extra energy for hunting and survival.
