‘Worst Toys’ list includes ninja blade, Stomp Rocket and ‘Cutting Fruit’

Every year, W.A.T.C.H. (World Against Toys Causing Harm) releases its “10 Worst Toys” list, and this year’s list includes:

Marvel Black Panther Slash Claw
W.A.T.C.H. says the toy is designed for kids to “slash” at people, while also warning not to “hit or swing at people.” Wakanda Forever!

Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Superstar Blade
“Spring-loaded. Do not aim at eyes or face.” Warnings like that usually mean the toy won’t end well for someone.

Stomp Rocket Ultra Rocket
So, let’s get this straight… you have to stomp on a launch stand that makes a rocket shoot up to 200 feet. The warning label says “Potential for eye, face and other impact injuries!”

Cutting Fruit
This lets kids cut fake fruit with a fake knife that can cause real puncture wounds and blunt force injuries.

Happy holiday shopping. You can see the complete list here.

Who will be the next Chicago mayor?

Now that the midterms are behind us, political ads have been replaced by sexual enhancement pharmaceutical ads. It won’t be long before we’re back in it, though… the Chicago mayoral election is coming up fast.

It seems like every third resident is in the mayoral race. Seriously, the growing list already includes former U.S. Commerce Secretary Bill Daley (of that “Daley” lineage), ex-top Chicago cop Garry McCarthy, Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown and former CPS CEO Paul Vallas. Here’s the alternative universe Chicago ballot we’d like to see:

Oprah
Maybe she wrote off the idea of running for president in 2020 because she has her sights on smaller, more familiar game: Chicago. You get an Italian Beef! You get an Italian Beef! And you get an Italian Beef!

Steve Bartman
The redemption of Bartman could have no better ending than having him ascend to City Hall.

Bill Kurtis
Can he run the city? Maybe not, but we’d line up to hear him speak at press conferences.

Tim McIlrath

The Rise Against frontman doesn’t shy away from politics and social causes, and he definitely has better pipes than any Chicago mayor ever.

Steve Albini
The celebrated audio engineer is known for not holding back on his opinions, making him a candidate along the lines of the Daleys at their most combative.

Stephanie Izard
Food brings us all together. We’d love to see a Little Goat shoehorned into City Hall.

Coach Q
You can’t argue with his record, and he’s available.

That guy who sells elotes on the corner

Holy crap, they’re delicious.

Bear
Maybe he’s the mayor we deserve.

Hey… wasn’t that?

Lots of love for the passing of Stan Lee yesterday.  The man himself was a hero, creating a universe for us to escape to.  Even with his passing, that world will live on.  Stan himself would often pop up at some point in the Marvel movies.  Here’s a clip of every cameo Stan Lee ever did, and there’s more to come.  He already shot a cameo for Avengers 4!  R.I.P. The Station will conduct the WKQX-FM “Panic! At The Disco Ticket Blitz Text” Contest (the “Contest”) substantially as described in these rules, and by participating, each participant agrees as follows:

  1. No purchase is necessary to enter or win. A purchase will not increase your chance of winning.   Void where prohibited.  All federal, state, and local regulations apply.

The term “immediate family members” includes spouses, parents and step-parents, siblings and step-siblings, and children and stepchildren.  The term “household members” refers to people who share the same residence at least three (3) months out of the year. The Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Participation constitutes entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to these Official Rules and Station’s decisions, which are final and binding in all matters related to the Contest. Winning a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.
  3. Contest Period. The Contest will begin at 9:00 am CT on Thursday, November 15, 2018 and will run until 6:30 pm CT on Thursday, November 15, 2018 (the “Contest Period”).  The Station’s computer is the official time keeping device for this Contest.
  4. How to Enter. To enter:

Valid text entries received during the 30 minute period after each cue-to-text sounder (as determined by the Station in its sole discretion) will be entered into the Grand Prize drawing. Time Delay Between Over-the-Air Analog Signal and Internet Broadcast: Due to the time delay that exists between the Station’s analog over-the-air signal and the Station’s online webcast, listeners who listen to the Station online may hear the cue to text later than listeners listening to the Station’s analog over-the-air signal. As a result, the odds of an online listener entering this Contest on-air may be diminished. Standard text messaging rates, as established by an individual’s wireless carrier, may apply, and Station assumes no responsibility for any fees or charges incurred for and associated with any text message sent to or from Station.  Any and all fees arising out of the transmission of a text message shall be the sole responsibility of the entrant.  Limit one (1) entry per person per phone number. Multiple participants are not permitted to share the same telephone number. Any attempt by any participant to submit more than one (1) entry by using multiple/different telephone phone numbers, identities, or any other methods will void that participant from further participation in the Sweepstakes.
  • Online: Send an e-mail with the title Panic! At The Disco Ticket Blitz during the Contest Period, to [email protected] containing your Legal Name, Phone Number, Date of Birth, and Address in the body of the e-mail.  All entries must be received by 6:29 pm CT on Thursday, November 15, 2018 to be eligible for the Grand Prize drawing. Limit one (1) entry per person per email address.  Multiple participants are not permitted to share the same email address. Any attempt by any participant to submit more than one (1) entry per day by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations and logins, or any other methods will void that entry and the participant may be disqualified.  Use of any automated system to participate is prohibited and will result in disqualification. Station is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, unintelligible, inappropriate or misdirected registrations, all of which will be disqualified.  In the event of a dispute as to any registration, the authorized account holder of the email address used to register will be deemed to be the participant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned the telephone number by the wireless carrier or an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted address.  Potential winner may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder. All entries become the sole and exclusive property of Station and will not be returned.  Station reserves the right to contact entrants and all other individuals whose email address is submitted as part of this promotion.  No mail-in entries will be accepted.
  1. Winner Selection. On Thursday, November 15, 2018, Station will randomly select ten (10) entries for the Grand Prize in a random drawing from among all valid entries received by Station during the Contest Period. The winning entrant will be contacted using the email address and/or telephone number provided with the entry and may be awarded the prize (subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these rules).  Station’s decisions as to the administration and operation of the Contest and the selection of the potential winner are final and binding in all matters related to the Contest. The potential winner will be required to sign and return to Station, within three (3) days of the date notice is sent, an affidavit of eligibility and a liability/publicity release (except where prohibited) in order to claim his/her prize, if applicable.  A winner who returns the affidavit of eligibility and liability/publicity release will be deemed to have accepted the contest prize and thereafter will not be permitted to rescind their acceptance of the prize and/or return the prize. If a potential winner cannot be contacted, fails to sign and return the affidavit of eligibility and/or the liability/publicity release within the required time period (if applicable), or if the prize or prize notification is returned as undeliverable, potential winner forfeits prize. In the event that the potential winner of a prize is disqualified for any reason, Station may award the applicable prize to an alternate winner by random drawing from among all remaining eligible entries.
  3. Grand Prize. Up to ten (10) Grand Prizes will be awarded in this Contest.  The Grand Prize is two (2) tickets to Panic! At The Disco at Allstate Arena on Monday, February 4, 2019. ARV: One Hundred Twenty dollars ($120). Winner is responsible for all taxes associated with prize receipt and/or use. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, Station reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Station’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.
  5. Limitations of Liability. The Released Parties are not responsible for: (1) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Station, entrants, printing errors or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest; (2) technical failures of any kind, including but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (3) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Contest; (4) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Contest or the processing of entries; or (5) any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant’s participation in the Contest or receipt or use, non-use or misuse of any prize. No more than the stated number of prizes will be awarded. In event that a production, technical, programming or other error causes more than stated number of prizes as set forth in these Official Rules to be claimed, Station reserves the right to award only the stated number of prizes by a random drawing among all legitimate, unawarded, eligible prize claims.
  6. Entrant agrees that: (i) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; (ii) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved exclusively by the United States District Court or the appropriate state court located in the Station’s listening area; (iii) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering this Contest, but in no event attorneys’ fees; and (iv) under no circumstances will entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and entrant hereby waives all rights to claim punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses, and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of entrant and Station in connection with the Contest, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the state in which the Station is located, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the state in which the Station is located or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the state in which the Station is located.
  7. Entrant’s Personal Information. Information collected from entrants is subject to Station’s Privacy Policy, which is available on the Station’s website under the “Privacy Policy” link. All entry blanks, forms, devices, and materials gathered during the course of entry, as well as all information contained therein, shall become the sole property of Station to be used, disposed of or destroyed in its sole discretion.  Station is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information entered by website users, and assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to Station’s website.

DAVE GROHL Cooks Barbecue For Southern California Firefighters

Dave does EVERYTHING …..

Dave Grohl of the famed FOO FIGHTERS visited the firefighters at Fire Station 68 in Calabasas, California on Monday night , where he personally cooked barbecue for the crew.  I mean …. HELL YES! The firemans psted on Instagram: “It was awesome to get a visit tonight from Dave Grohl of the @foofighters. He also treated us to some of his own @backbeatbbq. Thanks Dave! It was excellent!

The station is one of many that have been fighting the deadly fires in the Calabasas, Thousand Oaks and Malibu areas of southern California, which have destroyed hundreds of homes and structures while taking a handful of lives.

Dave has been working recently as a cook at the Beached Pig, a barbecue joint in the Studio City, Ca. The newly opened eatery is part of the Valley Urban Market, an outdoor food court co-founded by Grohl’s wife Jordyn.

He also recently launched a new Instagram page for his own Backbeat BBQ,

Why is Mr. Brightside STILL on the charts? Watch this short doc on the Killer’s massive hit

Here is why ‘Mr. Brightside’ is STILL an enduring hit song, and STILL on the charts. A million people stream this song somewhere every single week…..

The song from the KIllers has been a staple of 2000 alternative music lexicon but it’s rise to prominence has been a bumpy one from never having a second verse, the song debuting at an open mic, and how it would capture an entire generation. Youtube music vlog Middle 8 breaks it all down in a timeline of the track’s lifespan which made the Las Vegas band one of the biggest alt bands of the decade.

Station’s decisions as to the administration and operation of the Contest and the selection of the potential winner are final and binding in all matters related to the Contest.  Failure to respond to the initial verification contact within three (3) days of notification will result in disqualification.

Chicago is NOT getting Amazon HQ2, Here are the two cities that will get it

Chicago and many other cities were beat out for the much-desired location for Amazon’s long-in-the-works HQ2 complex with a split project being won by Long Island City, New York and Crystal City, Virginia. Each city is gaining 25,000 new jobs with a $5 billion investment from the massive company.

Mayor Rahm Emmanuel alluded that Chicago was out of the running for HQ2 earlier this week, but stayed clear of confirming it. In an article from the Sun Times, Emmanuel stated “One of the things I do know about in life: You don’t succeed unless you try,…Sometimes your biggest lessons in life where you learn the most is if you don’t succeed. What you can do better and what [were] those reasons?”

Chicago and the state of Illinois offered $2.25 billion in incentives for the omnipresent tech merchandiser to bring their operation to the area.

Watch Stan Lee and Conan O’Brien talk Marvel vs. DC

In this classic clip posted by Team Coco, Conan O’Brien hosted Stan Lee who was rooting for his beloved Marvel Universe superheroes as they were preparing to face off against DC superheroes in a big cross-published series in the pages of the popular comics in the mid-90s. It was a big deal for comic fans, and predated the big wave of Marvel/DC films that would come in the early 2000’s, and it felt like a massive event.  This segment also shows off Lee’s enduring charm and grasp of manning the hero world helm while riffing it up with the late night legend.

As we are all remembering Lee’s accomplishments after his passing, it’s little clips like this that remind you how much he wanted to please dedicated fans of Marvel and comics in general. It was oddly funny to hear Lee talk about his potential obituary as he was employed early in his writing career to pen obits for celebs before they passed on.

Comics Explained breaks it down with this retrospective showing how important the crossover battle was.

Monopoly For Millennials

Hasbro has launched “Monopoly For Millennials”.

It’s basically a roundup of tired stereotypes, a game piece shaped like a hashtag, bike share stations rather than railroads on the game board and collecting the most experiences (not cash) wins the game.

“Forget real estate. You can’t afford it anyway.”

R.I.P Stan Lee: Marvel mastermind who created Spider-Man, X-Men, and more passes away

TMZ reported today that Stan Lee, the mastermind behind many of greatest super-heroes of all time as the longtime head of Marvel Comics has passed away at 95. Lee helped modernize superheroes and comic books as a genre of entertainment  with a vast and immersive universe bringing the Hulk, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Iron-Man, the X-Men, and many more to life. His work would eventually change cartoons, movies, and television with adaptions of his characters becoming a multi-billion dollar empire under Disney with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is without any shadow of a doubt, one of the most influential minds in the history of comics.

His personality and graceful touch at bringing larger-than-life things into a relatable platform should be an inspiration to anyone pursuing your dreams in any creative endeavor.

To all of his True Believers, Excelsior!

Last year, Lee shared this sentiment about his vision on inclusiveness  and how Marvel would continue mirror reality in the future.
