Schedule for Chicago’s Summer 2019 “Movies in the Park”

As we endure this current post-winter non-spring weather malaise, we just want the summer to get to Chicago already so we can go outside without dread. One of the best parts of a Chicago summer is our plentiful parks which offer an uplifting experience under starlit skies with inviting temperatures. Get the blankets ready and go watch a movie in the park. You can tell yourself it’s “exercise” because it’s outside, right?

The Chicago Tribune reported today the following schedule for “Movies in the Park” across Chicago for the Summer 2019 schedule. The offerings feature several big blockbusters from superhero films like ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘Black Panther’ and classic family films like ‘the Wizard of Oz’ which of course is being presented in Oz Park. Facebook launching ‘Secret Crush’ dating feature

Facebook where we connect with friends, family, and “friends” is launching a questionable new dating feature called ‘Secret Crush’. The news was confirmed this week at their development conference, and it will allow you to select up to nine friends. Wired reported the feature is “like matching on Tinder or Bumble, except you get to hand-pick the specific friends you want to date ahead of time, instead of hoping their profiles show up in the queue. “

Here is how ‘Secret Crush’ is supposed to operate. If someone adds you on their list of nine, you get a notification saying “a friend added you as a secret crush.” If you match with the same person on your list, Facebook will match you and reveal the crush names to each other. If your crush does not choose you in their nine, you will not see it. The dating profiles will operate separate within Facebook and will not be as public as everything else.

‘Secret Crush’ has been rolled out for testing in Mexico, Canada, Columbia, Thailand, and several countries in Asia and South America. It’s not clear when it will be introduce in the United States.

Similar apps have been launched within other social media platforms like Friendster, so it’s not exactly original but it’s certainly eye-opening that it’s being introduced on the biggest social platform in the world. Expect to get some notifications you are either are really into or not into at all like that one cousin that constantly invites you to play some game you never want to play.

How do YOU feel about this feature let us know on our FB page.

This is the first state to ban single-use styrofoam containers

This is the first state to ban single-use styrofoam containers

Maine has become the first state to ban single-use food and drink containers made from Styrofoam (aka polystyrene foam).

Democratic Governor Janet Mills signed the bill into law Tuesday, and it will take effect in 2021. If you violate the law? You could have to pay up to $100 in fines.

According to ABC News, \”The law prohibits \’covered establishments\’ like restaurants and grocery stores from using polystyrene containers. Hospitals, seafood shippers and stores selling pre-packaged meat are exempt.\”

The Governor said \”Polystyrene cannot be recycled like a lot of other products, so while that cup of coffee may be finished, the Styrofoam cup it was in is not. In fact, it will be around for decades to come and eventually it will break down into particles, polluting our environment, hurting our wildlife, and even detrimentally impacting our economy.\” in a statement to WMTW.

While Maine is the only US state to enact a ban like this so far, Oregon, Vermont and Connecticut are also considering similar bans on food containers. Many communities have already passed similar legislature, including ones from Berkeley, Seattle, Minneapolis and New York City.

Will Chicago be next?

Brendon Urie received the key to Las Vegas

Panic! At The Disco’s frontman, Brendon Urie was honored with an incredible award — the Key to the City of Las Vegas!

Brendon Uris is from Las Vegas and got the key for his outstanding achievements in music.

Las Vegas commissioner Jim Gibson presented him the key on Tuesday.

Other artists who’ve received this award include Madonna, Elvis Presley and Britney Spears.
Keep killin’ it, Brendon Urie!

Instant six pack is now a thing

So for anyone who doesn’t want to put their time and effort into working out at the gym, they can now get instant abs.

Masterpiece Hospital in Bankok now offers ‘instant six packs’. How they do it is different, instead of implanting silicone into patients’ abdomens, the abs are “etched” out by removing fat around the abdomen area. Creating a more natural and long-lasting appearance than fillers.

In an interview with Coconuts, Masterpiece Hospital CEO and surgeon Raweewat “Sae” Maschamadol shared that they receive between 20 and 30 customers each year asking for six-pack surgery. Along with how 90% of their patients who undergo the surgery are fitness buffs who are just having trouble reaching their goal.

They claim the surgery is painless, but the recovery process is not pretty.

DON’T LOOK IF YOU’RE SQUEAMISH!

Roaming ravioli shut down State Street

If you were downtown Tuesday afternoon you may have noticed how State Street was closed due to a suspicious object.

Well, that ‘suspicious object’ was just a can of Chef Boyardee attached to skate wheels.

But as a precaution, officers blocked traffic and shut down operations at the nearby CTA Red Line stations.

Turns out a DePaul University student made the car prototype for a design class and had put it on a State Street to take a photo.
Feels like this escalated quickly, plus why didn’t the student just pick the car back up after the photo?

After Eric Tendian posted updates on what was happened, Twitter users had a little fun when they found out it was just a can of Chef Boyardee.

State Street was only closed down for 30 mins, but we’re pretty sure this all could have been easily avoided.

CHVRCHES increase security after death and rape threats from Chris Brown fans

CHVRCHES have taken to social media again to say they have had to add more security during their current tour due to online threats of death and rape by fans of the singer Chris Brown. CHVRCHES singer Lauren Mayberry posted several screen shots with NSFW language that directed the threats directly at her and the band for their comments about Brown. This all comes after last week when CHVRCHES called out EDM artist Marshmello after he announced a collaboration with rapper Tyga and Brown.

Brown has had a long public history of criminal activity including assaulting his then girlfriend and fellow singer Rihanna in 2009. Brown completed his probation related to the assault in 2015. Tyga has come under fire for references to sexual relations with underage girls in his lyrics. The band stated they still appreciate and respect Marshmello but also expressed that working with these questionable artist “enables, excuses, and ultimately tacitly endorses that behavior”.

Brown himself blasted off some insulting comments in response with Mayberry brushing it off saying “Angry men on the internet can call me all the names they want. I still think domestic abuse is wrong.” Consequence of Sound has an in-depth report on the threats here.

In more recent tweets, Mayberry has clarified how the sitiation has escalated.

Mayberry continued to stand her ground recently on stage this past weekend in a video captured by TMZ. CHVRCHES perform at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on May 2nd.

If you or anyone is affected by domestic violence, you can always reach out to the National Domestic Crisis Hotline at  1-800-799-SAFE (7233). All calls are free and confidential. The calls are available in multiple languages as well.

Watch the must-see high school theater version of ‘ALIEN’

The theater team at North Bergan High School made internet headlines a few months with a charming staged production of the sci-fi horror classic ‘ALIEN’. It’s not your average stage adaption from a drama club, usually you get your standard musicals but this show gained rave reviews for it’s charming crafted special effects and dedication to the oringal 1980 classic film, so much that an encore performance was put on recently with star of the film Sigourney Weaver introducing the play.

Here you can see the entire play shot on a single 4k camera. Just based on the video quality, it does not lend itself to full watch but skimming through you really have to appreciate what this drama club put together and performed. Youtube user ButtonSmasher says the school will release a professionally recording of the production in the future.

Film legend Ridley Scott who directed the film, donated along with the town of North Bergen donated money for the encore production.

Alien is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary with several short films and more special events.

Here is how the breakout play was put together from creation of the props and costumes from recycled materials and more. It’s truly a remarkable form of creative energies coming together.

So long, Heartland Cafe

Rogers Park institution Heartland Cafe faced the wrecking ball today. Heartland was known for its healthy menu and connection to the local community, as well as its people-watching-friendly outdoor seating.

As Block Club Chicago reports, the building and site for Heartland were sold in January for $1.3 million. Fans of the restaurant grabbed some of the rubble to keep as a souvenir, with one telling Block Club he wanted to “honor what the Heartland represented.”

An apartment project is planned for the space at Morse and Glenwood.

Facebook dating: We’ve come a long way from ‘pokes’

Facebook Dating is coming:

  • It was announced a year ago at a developer conference.
  • A “Secret Crush” feature will allow users to queue up a list of friends they’d like to be more-than-friends with. If your secret crush is into you, too, you’ll get a notification and then you can connect on Messenger.
  • You can keep 9 secret crushes on your list at a time. Let’s not be greedy.
  • When it was first announced, Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook Dating was for “long-term relationships, not hookups.”
  • Facebook Dating got its start in five countries and will be in the U.S. before the end of the year. Maybe much sooner.
  • Facebook dating will be for mobile-only to start.

So, is this a “Tinder killer?” Will it be, contrary to Zuckerberg’s claim, an easier way to hook up?
