These are the worst Halloween candies ever, according to science (kinda).

Let’s talk Halloween candy.  The BAD stuff, at least according to a hybrid survey done by the website Candy Store.

They combined a survey of over 30,000 customers along with a dozen lists made by popular websites to determine the top 10 worst candies that could end up in a trick or treat bag on October 31st.  So not incredibly scientific, but — a great jumping off point for arguments.

Here we go.  Here are the Top 10 Worst Halloween Candies:

10. Bit-O-Honey
9. Good & Plenty
8. Licorice
7. Smarties
6. Tootsie Rolls
5. Necco Wafers
4. Wax Cola Bottles
3. Peanut Butter Kisses
2. Circus Peanuts
1. Candy Corn

You can click the link above to see the BEST Halloween candies (hint: my FAVORITE turned out to be #1).  — [eric]

While you are here, check out Shaw’s panel at the 2019 Hawks convention.

Watch the moving Chicago history of the Ferris Wheel

The 1893 World’s Fair was a very historic and formative leap for the United States and our beloved city Chicago, giving us the world’s stage to show off technology, culture, and more. One of the biggest features from the fair was not even open on the first day of the months long event, it was the miraculous for it’s time, Ferris Wheel. The fair’s lead organizer Daniel Burnham and his team were held to the pressure of designing an event that would match or exceed what Paris had achieved with their World’s Fair in 1889, which gave visitor’s the majestic Eiffel Tower. Our Fair would match that with beauty of the ‘White City’ along the Midway Plaisance with it’s destination exhibits, but the biggest draw was the world’s first Ferris Wheel.

Yeah, it may seem dated when we jet-speed roller coasters at Six Flags Greet America, but for it’s time it was romantic adventure to see the city from that angle before the age of the skyscraper. This wonderfully crafted video from the must-follow Youtube channel Defunctland looks into how the Wheel came to be in the challenging circumstances of the 1893 ‘Columbian Exposition’ and how it showed off America’s quest for amusement.

Now if Defunctland is going to start covering amusement park things gone by, can we get deep dive into Melrose Park’s KIddie Land? Chicago Tribune’s Rick Kogan in July wrote a love letter to local amusement parks of the past, it’s a great read.

Speaking of enjoying things in the past, Sundays 10a-12pm 101WKQX gives you ALT_Backspace, two hours of classic alternative music from the 80’s, 90’s,and 00’s. One person who is very excited about is this old man from the 1990’s.

The end of September DOES have an effect on Green Day after all.

You always hear the joke that we need to wake up Billie Joe Armstrong at the end of the ninth month of the year — based as know on Green Day’s song, “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”  But to every joke, there is a truth.
AltPress is reporting that YouTube views of that track spiked 135% this week as September came to an end — double the average amount of views the rest of the year.  Whether or not the meme artificially inflated those numbers or fans just naturally flock to the song to ring in October has yet to be determined.  Maybe somebody can commission a study or launch an investigation — or whatever.
In the meantime, let’s see if we can’t jack up the numbers just a little more.  —- [eric]

Is ‘Joker’ the best movie of the year?

There has been much controversy about DC Comics inspired film ‘Joker’ which opened in theaters on Thursday night, but that didn’t stop it from raking in millions already. So is it a great movie? Does Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in this brooding origin story of the ‘clown prince of crime’ following beloved past performances of the role by Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamil, and Jack Nicholson?  Here are some reputable reviews from the best Youtuber movie channels who seemingly are digging the movie directed by Todd Phillips.

If you have seen the movie, let us know what you think on social media.

A Chicago billionaire just made the largest donation in the Museum of Science and Industry’s history

Ken Griffin, who founded the hedge fund Citadel, just donated $125 million to the institution. It\’s the largest in the museum\’s history, and will result in a name change. While it will take months to switch over completely, the name will be changed to the Kenneth C. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

Griffin told the Chicago Tribune, \”This is about maintaining the museum at the forefront of being a resource to inspire the next generation of our country in the areas of science and innovation.”

Even Ed Sheeran’s tattoo artist knows Ed’s tats are bad

Ed Sheeran is one of the strangest pop stars we’ve ever had. Whereas most crazy pop stars act out for attention, Sheeran has quietly gone down his own path of individualism. For Sheeran, his persona includes a lot of tattoos.

The thing is, his tattoos are all very strange.

The guy that does Ed’s ink thinks his tattoos are whack. From the Heinz ketchup bottle to the Gingerbread man from “Shrek”, Sheeran is covered in some questionable ink.

According to Kevin Paul, the man behind the needle, claims that all of Sheeran’s ink is personal. If that’s the case, we’re terrified. We’d rather this conglomerate of ink be random and playful, not personal.

43% of Americans say it’s okay to put up Christmas Decorations before Halloween

You read the title. You know why you’re here. We’re here to tell you that 43% of Americans are wrong. It is not okay to decorate your house in Christmas decor this early in the year.

There’s nothing we enjoy more than hanging our stockings with care and finding the perfect place for each and every ornament on the tree, but all of that comes after Thanksgiving. We have another month to be spooked and thrilled, and then some time in between to be thankful for all of those around us. Why do we need to rush into this?

Let us know if this is okay or not by tweeting us at @101WKQX with the #Ahoy. Is it fine to put Christmas decorations up this early?

Whoops! That’s porn up on that billboard

It would appear that electronic billboards don’t have incognito tabs. The fine folks of Auburn Hills, Michigan found that out the hard way when an electronic billboard showed graphic pornography a few days ago.

The Auburn Hills Police Lieutenant noted that the video only streamed on the billboard for about 20 minutes, but many would argue that any time at all was too much. We do have to wonder what those 911 calls sounded like, though, as the police force received numerous calls about the incident.

Perhaps they sounded something like what resident Chuck McMahon had to say to a Detroit radio station. When asked, he noted, “I was just looking up at it and I was like, ‘Huh, oh, wow. That’s porn.”
