Helpful advice if you find yourself sick

Great info if you find yourself fighting COVID-19:

“Some helpful advice from my mom who is a nurse: Good advice from a nurse if you should get the virus: I know we’re all tired of hearing/talking about it, but one thing I HAVEN’T really seen going around is advice for what happens if you DO get coronavirus (many of us will), we’re only seeing advice for how to try to AVOID it. So as your friendly neighborhood RN, a wee thread: Things you should *actually* buy ahead of time (Erm, not sure what the obsession with toilet paper is?): Kleenex, Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in 325 mg tablets, Ibuprofen (Advil) in 200 mg tablets, Mucinex, Robitussin or DayQuil/NyQuil, whatever your cough medicine of choice is If you don’t have a humidifier, that would also be a good thing to get. (You can also just turn the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom breathing in the steam). Also a good time to make a big batch of your favorite soup to freeze and have on hand. If you have a history of asthma and you have a prescription inhaler, make sure the one you have isn’t expired and refill it/get a new one if it is. You basically just want to prepare as though you know you’re going to get a nasty respiratory bug like bronchitis or pneumonia. You just have the foresight to know it’s coming. For symptom management, use the meds I mentioned. For a fever over 101, alternate Tylenol and Advil so you’re taking a dose of one or the other every 3 hours. Use both cough suppressants and expectorants (most cough meds have both). Drink a ton, hydrate hydrate. Rest lots. If you’re sick, you should not be leaving your house except to go to the doctor, and if you do, wear a mask (regular is fine, you don’t need an N95). You DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THE ER unless you are having trouble breathing or your fever is very high and unmanaged with meds. 90% of healthy adult cases thus far have been managed at home with basic rest/hydration/over-the-counter meds. We don’t want to clog the ERs unless you’re actually in distress. The hospital beds will be used for people who actively need oxygen/breathing treatments/IV fluids If you have a pre-existing lung condition (COPD, emphysema, lung cancer) or are on immunosuppressants, now is a great time to talk to your PCP or specialist about what they would like you to do if you get sick. They might have plans to get you admitted and bypass the ER entirely. One major relief to you parents is that kids do VERY well with coronavirus— they usually bounce back in a few days, no one under 18 has died, and almost no kids have required hospitalization (unless they have a lung disease like CF). Just use pediatric dosing of the same meds. @lil_intravrt”

Stay safe,

Election Day information

Happy Election Day!  If you are able, GO VOTE (and stay 6 feet away from the person in front of you please.)

Need to find your polling place?  Go HERE.

Want to know who is running?  That’s HERE.

You can still mail-in your ballot, it just needs to be postmarked by today.  Check your local post office for hours.

“NOTICE: HOW YOU CAN HELP: If you are a healthy and capable voter and find your precinct to be under-staffed and over-burdened, you are WELCOME and ENCOURAGED to offer to be sworn in as a Substitute Judge to help the election run smoothly in that precinct. Those who are sworn in and serve Election Day will be compensated on a pro-rated basis ($170 for the full day of 5 am thru after polls closed) based on the number of hours that they serve.”

I love the smell of democracy in the morning.  And hand sanitizer.

You can still help PAWS puppies during quarantine!!

Last week, The PAWS Animal Magnetism Fundraiser was canceled. It’s a huge night for the organization to help raise money for all of the things that PAWS Chicago provides to animals and their people.
Reg REALLY wanted to show off his tie, so I included it in this post. WHOSEAGOODBAYBEEBOI?!
I was looking forward to the silent auction. Thankfully, they have extended it a few more days. It’s a great way to help out an amazing organization. Bid away my friend, and help PAWS, help the animals of Chicago!

Patton Oswalt entertains his neighbors during quarantine

Inspired by all of the Italian people singing on their balconies together, Patton Oswalt decided he would try to entertain his neighbors the best way he knows how.

With comedy.

First, wow. That is a nice neighborhood.

Also, these neighbors are getting a free Patton Oswalt show. People pay money for that!

Penguins roam The Shedd!

The Shedd Aquarium let their rockhopper penguins, Edward and Annie, have the keys to the kingdom! Follow their adventure on The Shedd Aquarium’s Facebook page here!

Here is the latest!

The adventure continues! 🐧🐧This morning, Edward and Annie explored the rotunda. They are a bonded pair of rockhopper penguins, which means they are together for nesting season. Every spring is nesting season for the penguins here at Shedd, and this year is no different! Next week, penguins, including Edward and Annie, will begin to build their nests. You’re invited to digitally join us for the nesting coverage! In the meantime, we will share a variety of animal activities, and yes, Wellington will return! While this may be a strange time for us, these days are relatively normal for the penguins and other animals at Shedd. Our caregivers are constantly providing new activities, experiences, food and more to allow the animals to express natural behaviors—even if that includes simply exploring. Let us know what penguin activities you want to see! 👇

Current theatrical releases go directly to on-demand streaming

We’ve been wondering over the past few days if the big movie studios were going to consider this, and sure enough… NBCUniversal announced that it’s releasing a handful of theatrical offerings “on demand,” just as they’re available in theaters (the ones that remain open, that is).

The Hollywood Reporter says current films like The Invisible Man and The Hunt, as well as the upcoming Trolls World Tour, will be made widely available on “on demand” platforms as soon as Friday.

Rentals will be $19.99 and good for 48 hours. And now the question is whether other studios will follow suit. Could we see Black Widow on Disney Plus soon?

Ten “Good News” Stories Surrounding the Coronavirus Outbreak

A lot of the news we’ve seen this past week has been pretty dire.  But there are a ton of INSPIRING stories out there too.  Here’s a quick round-up of ten good news stories we’ve seen about the outbreak . . .

1.  Videos of people in Italy SINGING together from their balconies went viral this weekend.  The best one is from Siena, Italy, where they sang a popular song about how proud they are of their hometown.  (Here’s the video.)

2.  All across Spain, people went to their windows to give healthcare workers a huge round of applause.

3.  A video of doctors and nurses in Wuhan smiling and removing their masks has been making the rounds on social media.  China closed the last of its emergency hospitals last week after spread of the virus there finally leveled off.

4.  For the first time, South Korea had more recoveries in one day than new cases.

5.  After Disneyland shut down, they donated all their extra food to a food bank in Orange County, California.

6.  Last week, we heard about a distillery in Oregon that was making hand sanitizer and giving it out for free.  Now more distilleries around the country are doing it.

7.  Internet providers are offering unlimited, free public Wi-Fi during the crisis.  And the big phone companies are stepping up too.  Verizon is pausing late fees.  And T-Mobile is giving customers unlimited data on their smartphones.

8.  A woman in North Carolina named Becky Hoeffler has been doing grocery store runs for elderly people to reduce their exposure.

9.  A convenience store in Scotland has been handing out free facemasks and hand sanitizer to people over 65.

10.  And a 17-year-old kid near Seattle named Avi Schiffmann started a website in late December that tracks coronavirus cases around the world in real time.

You can check it out at nCoV2019.live.  He intentionally included how many patients have recovered in each country, so people won’t just focus on the negative.

The Metro closes, seeks support for staff

At the order of our governor, all restaurants and bars are being shuttered to help slow the spread of COVID-19 statewide.  You can still support some of our local restaurants by ordering food for pick-up or delivery, but an uncertain future lies ahead for us, including all staff at these shuttered places.  The Metro is seeking help for it’s amazing staff who depend on entertainment, service and hospitality to pay their bills.

As our world continues to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Metro, smartbar and GMan Tavern have made the difficult decision of closing our doors for the indefinite future. While our community continues to navigate these unprecedented times, we share in the concern for our neighbors, friends and family whose livelihoods depend on the entertainment, service and hospitality industry.

In working to find helpful and creative ways to support our community, we have created a GoFundMe page for our staff, who depend on the gathering of our Chicago community in order to provide for themselves and their families.

UPDATE: Liars Club has started a fundraiser for it’s staff:

If you hear of any other fundraisers or support we can offer in the community, please reach out!  You can text in 24/7 at 312101, or email me at [email protected]

90 day fiance never fails to entertain

Big Ed, a 54-year-old who just wants to be loved, found the perfect woman for him.

She just lives in a different country… and has never actually met him.

Oh, and he also puts mayo in his hair.

I mean, I guess his hair looks nice. Right?

Either way, it all came down to their big meeting in the Philippines.

Now that’s what I call love at first sight.

No other motives at all.

Congrats to the happy couple!

Governor Pritzker orders all sit-down service at bars and restaurants to cease.

Governor J.B. Pritzker has ordered the closure of all bars and restaurants effective at the end of business tomorrow [3.16.20].  From the Chicago Sun-Times:

“We are working with restaurant owners and food delivery services across the state to see if restaurants can safely keep their kitchens open, so the restaurants can continue food delivery to people at their homes,” Pritzker said at a news conference Sunday at the Thompson Center in the Loop.

“The time for persuasion and public appeals is over. The time for action is here. This is not a joke. No one is immune to this, and you have an obligation to act in the best interests of all the people of this state.”

Trailer for the Beastie Boys “live documentary experience” is here.

It was supposed to be debuted at SXSW, so instead….the Beastie Boys documentary trailer made its first appearance online this weekend.

The Spike Jonez documentary will chronicles the lives and times of Ad-Rock, Mike D, and MCA, all centered around a live storytelling show that the surviving guys put on in Brooklyn last year.  The trailer promises three big areas that will be discussed:

  • How the Beastie Boys started as “mediocre rappers,” then suddenly exploded into a worldwide phenomenon.
  • The burnout the guys faced after becoming the “party bros” the parodied.
  • Why the late Adam Yauch was “the driving force” behind the group.

This look different and incredibly dope….I, for one, cannot wait to stream this starting April 24th on Apple+TV.  — [e.k.]
