Get Scared! Netflix reviving Unsolved Mysteries

From the opening notes of that synth-wave theme song which sent goosebumps up my arms, ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ scared the crap out of me

with stories of unsolved terrifying stories of missing people, murders, ghosts, and other generally creepy things that reportedly really happened. Netflix is rebooting the show with producers of the hit series ‘Stranger Things’ on July 1st.

The show started in 1987 and has ran on NBC, CBS, Lifetime, and Spike with sternly-voiced actor Robert Stack and former Chicago Police officer-turned-actor Dennis Farina serving as hosts. The new revived series will be “pure documentary style” according to producers.

FilmRise has controlled the streaming TV rights to the series and they have restored the series. You can stream multiple seasons now for free on YouTube.

Will MLB get back on the field in 2020?

The owners and the players have gone back and forth in testy negotiations on how to handle a shortened 2020 seasons, but the latest amended proposal was put out by the league to the players yesterday with “significantly more money” being offered according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The two sides do not seem to be close on an agreement.

There is a lot of challenges to making it all work out especially with player compensation, the amount of games, draft selections, and what would happen if there is a second Coronavirus outbreak in the fall right around the time the World Series playoffs would start.

The sports world has been adapting to our COVID-19 circumstances with the NHL, NBA, PGA, and MLS have already put plans into action to get play back with no fans and cameras rolling to broadcast the action. Baseball is trailing behind other leagues which have made adaptions, but would it be summer without us talking trash between Cubs and White Sox fans?

Sports podcast good guy Pat McAfee laid into the whole issue proclaiming this could be really bad if a deal can not be reached soon.

Drive-in movies coming to Bridgeview

Drive-in movies are coming to Bridgeview this week, as Chicago Drive-In Theatres begin operation.

SeatGeek Stadium will host movies every night, starting at 8:30pm. The early shows will all be family-friendly, while weekend “midnight movies” will be tailored to a more mature audience. The screen is 70 ft., and audio will be transmitted through car radios.

Tickets can be found here. They’re 30 bucks a car, or 50 bucks if you want something closer to the screen. Hand sanitizer stations will be abundant, and concessions will be available. The schedule kicks off Thursday night with “The Goonies,” which is good enough for me.

The Golden Gate Bridge makes weird noises now… creepy

Designers accidentally have made it so the Golden Gate Bridge sings now!

People started noticing that there were strange noises coming from the bridge all across the city, so naturally people took this to the internet.

Luckily people were quick to answer the mystery.

It’s all fun and cool now but I bet San Fransisco residents are going to get tired of this pretty quickly.

Pearl Jam releases unedited version of “Jeremy” video.

Orange was the favorite color of Hadiya Pendleton, who at the age of 15 was shot and killed here in Chicago — a case of mistaken identity.  Orange is the color of safety clothing worn by hunters.  Orange is also the color of National Gun Violence Awareness Day — AKA, National Wear Orange Day.

When Pearl Jam released the video for “Jeremy” back in 1992, the conclusion of the story was edited for TV.  Loudwire shares Pearl Jam’s reasoning behind finally releasing the unedited version after all these years.  We also have it for you below.  [WARNING: The graphic suicide at the end of the edited version was vaguely alluded to; this new version leaves no doubt as to what Jeremy did in front of his classmates.]

TBS’s ‘Tournament of Laughs’ makes comedy into a sport

“Comedy is now a sport”

That’s opening tag line in the teaser for what might be one of the more intriguing TV shows of the summer season, as TBS announced this week ‘Tournament of Laughs’ will debut on June 21st as a single-elimination bracket-style competition. It’s ‘March Maddness’ with humor. We don’t have sports so maybe watching some of the funniest people on the planet duke it out is the next best thing.

Unlike other televised comedy contest shows like ‘Last Comic Standing’ which usually attempts elevate working and touring comedians to a national television exposure, this new series will focus many comedians you may already be familiar with from TV and film. ‘SNL’ alum Jason Sudeikis will host and the show will feature stand-up sets, but the competitors will also have to produce videos, song parodies, and other comedic challenges. After each episode the audience will vote on who advances.

Deadline is reporting that the tournament will feature a legit cast of comedy stars with Jeff Ross, Margaret Cho, Gilbert Gottfried, Judah Friedlander, Michael Rapaport, Jim Norton, Fortune Feimster, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Natasha Leggero, Cameron Esposito, Godfrey, The Sklar Brothers, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Josh Wolf, Clayton English, Yamaneika Saunders, Gina Yashere, Tim Dillon, Moshe Kasher, Jessica Kirson, Paul Rodriguez, Sarah Tiana, Matteo Lane, Beth Stelling, Vladimir Caamano, Ian Edwards, Aida Rodriguez, Megan Gailey, Preacher Lawson, Piff The Magic Dragon, and two more comics to be named.

Several Chicago-bred funny professionals are represented our region Megan Gailey, Mateo Lane, Cameron Esposito, Matteo Lane, and Beth Ste;ling have all spent years crafting their acts around town.

Comedy champ Bert Kreischer touring drive-in theaters

Well with a lot of entertainment and music videos shuttered due to COVID-19 safety regulations, the drive-in movie theater is having a revival coast-to-coast and it’s not just movies on a screen, several live performances are going to be held for those viewing from their mini-vans including comedy champion Bret Kreischer.

‘The Machine’ rolled out a wave of dates at drive-in theaters this week with the closest to Chicago being Indianapolis at Tibbs Drive-In on June 26th with an early show and a late show at 10:30 local time. You can get tickets here.

More and more of our beloved bands have been finding ways to adapt to the challenging ‘new normal’ including the pride of Zion and WKQX friends, Local H. Scott Lucas called into our Save Our Stages radiothon a few weeks back and teased that his band would play a drive-in so it’s official now. If you never been to Gibson City, well now you have a reason to go there for H’s 2 night residency on the big screen live.

‪Hallelujah! We’ve added a second show! You wanted it you got it — June 26th at the Harvest Moon Twin Drive-in Theatre. Bound for the drive-in AGAIN! Tickets on sale Monday at 9am.‬

Nurse gets a great Star Wars surprise from Mark Hamill

“Chole, the force is strong with you!” said Marl Hamill who surprised Chole, a San Diego nurse on a recent episode of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’. It was a heart warming moment to give a needed boost to a deserving healthcare worker who has been working a in COVID-19 testing center.

It was a sponsored segment sure, but it just feels good to see things like this happen for those are STILL in the good fight.

With no baseball in sight, may I present — professional wiffle ball?

The opening moments of this video absolutely sucked me in.  It is a sign that I must really be missing sports.

Eight teams make up MLW Wiffle Ball — a league that on the surface appears to be a bunch of friends gathering at someone’s house to play a backyard sport.

But it is wayyyy more than that. Besides the pro-level graphics they bring to their footage, MLW has sponsors (Dick’s Sporting Goods, Giants Sunflower Seeds among others) as well as their own merch site.  That’s right — you can finally buy a game-used, autographed wiffle ball to add to your sports memorabilia collection.

Check out out some of their game highlights.  Maybe you’ll be compelled to drive to Michigan to catch a game before the 2020 season ends in late July.  Maybe you’ll just keep on going living your regular life.  In the year 2020, who even knows anymore?  — [eric]

Jake Paul arrested in Arizona after video shows him inside mall that was being looted

Everyone’s favorite Youtuber to hate, Jake Paul, was arrested in Scottsdale Arizona following video of him inside a closed mall that was looted during protests surfaced.

Maybe they should just leave him in jail….

That might solve a lot of problems.
