Manley’s Mixtape- Smashing Pumpkins

How could I possibly do a series of History of Alternative mixtapes and not include one for the greatest alternative band in the history of Chicago?  The Smashing Pumpkins helped define the Grunge Era of the 90’s, launching alternative in to the mainstream, and the best thing about it all was that they were ours.  While everyone turned to Seattle, we had our own ultimate alt band right in our back yards.  From Billy’s snarling howls to James Iha’s killer riffs, the Smashing Pumpkins made sure that Chicago got its seat at the table during the 90’s explosion.  Here are a few of my favorite SP tunes of all time.

***NOTE*** This isn’t really a top 10 Pumpkins tune for me, but I had to share it because what in the holy hell is happening in this video?!

Whose Karen is it?

Another week, another listener submitted Karen.

This time we have a Karen who refuses to pick up after her dog because obviously that isn’t her responsibility.

C’mon Karen! That’s just gross!

Clean up your dog poop people, don’t be a jerk.

AI deepfakes are feared to take over nearly 90% of videos online in the future

There is a serious danger that artificial intelligence will take over the majority of videos seen online using deepfake edits.

A deepfake is a videos that use AI technology to paste a celebrity face onto a different body.

And they are super convincing.

Be very careful with what you’re watching online. You never know what’s real and what’s not.

Rachel Nichols has bad timing when asking about Lebron James

Almost immediately following the Heat’s victory over the Boston Celtics in the Easter Conference Finals; ESPN decided to get a storyline going for the NBA finals.

This was actually asked literally right after they got the trophy. Like hey good job, now what about that freight train hurling right at you?

I mean Rachel Nichols was just doing her job but, can you give the Heat like five seconds to celebrate their conference championship!

Long lost brothers find each other after 60 years!

These brothers were separated from each other when they were young in Western New York.

But they never stoped looking for one another, now 60 years later, they’re finally reunited.

This also goes to show you the strength of the Bills Mafia. Time may have separated them, but their team never changed.

So beautiful.

Manley’s Mixtape- Foo Fighters

How many people on this Earth are cooler than Dave Grohl?  David Attenborough and Baby Yoda, even though thats more of a puppet but whatever, thats it!  From his breakthrough as “the drummer from Nirvana” to epic stardom as the guy who did the drum battle with that cute kid, Grohl has defined alternative music from the 90s all the way to today.  Whether he’s drumming for Queens of the Stone Age or Them Crooked Vultures, or ripping through Everlong in front of 100,000 screaming fans, Dave IS alternative.  Here are a few (Foo Fighters specific) songs to get you started on your Dave Grohl journey of awesomeness…

Smashing Pumpkins ‘1979’ is an anthem for nostaglia

Trash Theory made this wonderful lyrical breakdown video on the Smashing Pumpkins ‘1979’ and how it represents the collective youthful exuberance we seek to regain only when we’ve grown away from it. That’s sort of what we are doing with History of Alternative which you can catch on-air on 101WKQX weekdays 10a-7pm for a limited time.

It’s got some NSFW language, but it’s a well-woven piece that shows how the song’s message permeates in other movies and music while being one of the Pumpkin’s best tracks. The video also notes how Pumpkin’s leader Billy Corgan was bringing the band in a different direction on ‘Mellon-collie and the Infinities Sadness’  and artistically stopping one formula that they grew tired of one their earlier records.

One thing this video gets wrong in my opinion is where it claims the band has not been able to strike the same glory since this period which is just aggressively esoteric. If you are going to praise the band for encapsulated the ideal feeling of youth, why you would then not allow the same artist to grow?

No matter what you think of this video, maybe you will love this: Our epic Lounge session with Smashing Pumpkins where Billy and the company share stories of growing up in Chicago and more.
