#YOUTUBEISOVER : New content rules effecting the biggest Youtube channels

Phil-DeFranco-YouTube-is-Shutting-Down-My-Channel-YouTubeIsOverParty

Youtube has been filled with fearful debate in videos this week from some of the most watched channels about the video platform’s new rules on content which some have called outright censorship. Starting late Wednesday and into Thursday morning, Youtube starting to demonetize videos by popular ‘Tubers citing their new rules. This directly effects the income of your favorite online video personalities like Phillip Defranco, PewdiePie, Smosh, JennaMarbles, and many more. The demonetization notifications were justified by YT as “content that is considered inappropriate for advertising”. To put it in the most simple sense, you may not be able say the ‘F’ word in a video and get advertising.

Here are the new rules that caused thousand of videos to get demonetized.

  • Sexually suggestive content, including partial nudity and sexual humor
  • Violence, including display of serious injury and events related to violent extremism
  • Inappropriate language, including harassment, profanity and vulgar language
  • Promotion of drugs and regulated substances, including selling, use and abuse of such items
  • Controversial or sensitive subjects and events, including subjects related to war, political conflicts, natural disasters and tragedies, even if graphic imagery is not shown

These new rules and how they are enforced has had widespread negative response on Tubeverse this weel with videos covering depression, world news, and serious issues losing advertising support for the creators.

The story gained the most traction when it was directly addressed by Defranco whose channel has over 4.5 million subscribers. Note the videos below are third party content and may have NSFW language so don’t get freaked out when you hear a naughty word or two. Is that concept that Youtube can’t handle?

ETC Show broke down the hard truth on the new regulations, shining light on the fact that the website may have issues with an automated program that could cause the website to yank advertising off videos deemed “inappropriate for advertising”. The worst part is that earnings could have been yanked from select videos for several months without the individual video creators even knowing unless they dig through their analytics. This then forces creators to put the demonetize videos into a review process. It’s frustrating to just type that. This is probably the most damning diatribe about the issue and shows the video giant doing an underwhelming job to instituting these rules.

UPDATE: Phillip Defranco spoke with a Youtube spokesperson and found even more
