MUSIC REVIEWS

Silverchair's new album, "Young Modern" is good, but not as great as their two previous albums, "Diorama" and "Neon Ballroom". This album is all over the place musically—which occasionally does not work, but usually does.
The album’s opener, “Young Modern Station” is (kind of) a rock song and sounds like a something off of “Neon Ballroom”—which isn’t a bad thing. The most interesting track, "If You Keep Losing Sleep", is a carnival-esque song complete with a sweeping orchestra and marching band drums that almost sounds like a song from My Chemical Romance's "Black Parade"—only much softer. The first single, "Straight Lines" is a fantastic pop song that gets better with each listen. Two of the strongest tracks, "Waiting All Day", and "Low", are a pair of Beach Boys inspired tunes that are perfect summer anthems.
The closer, "All Across the World", as well as the weird, seven-minute song, "Those Thieving Birds (Parts 1 & 2)/ Strange Behaviour" just never really take off musically because the band tries relies too much on the orchestra and not enough on the music or lyrics. In addition, the wannabe-Jet song, “Mind Reader”, sounds like Silverchair trying to let fans know that they still “rock”—only it doesn’t.
Overall, this is a good album because it is musically diverse and full of catchy songs that only get better with repeated listens. “Young Modern” sounds very different than any other Silverchair album, as well as anything else in alternative music right now.
