The first time I played "The Catalyst" by Linkin Park on Q101, I tilted my head, furrowed my brow, and made a Scooby Doo-esque sound of confusion. (Or maybe I'm exaggerating for comic effect. Just work with me.) On my second and third listens, the confusion melted away. Beneath the beats, besides the lack of guitar, I heard the same intensity. I stopped thinking about "The Catalyst" as a "Linkin Park song." Ten years after Hybrid Theory, I was presently surprised.
Now I've read a review claiming that
A Thousand Suns might be Linkin Park's answer to Kid A, the Radiohead album that dominated my personal playlist when Linkin Park was an emerging artist. In 2000, I knew "Creep" and respected OK Computer. It wasn't until I heard Kid A and saw them that summer that I fell hard for Radiohead's intensely emotional electronic sound.
