In 1991, 11-year-old
Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped from her
home near Lake Tahoe, California, by a convicted RAPIST,
58-year-old Phillip Garrido, and his wife, 54-year-old Nancy.
--But last week,
Jaycee was finally found and returned to her family.
(--Just in case you aren't up
to speed, Jaycee was kidnapped and held in a backyard compound of tents and
sheds outside Oakland, California, for 18 years, during which time she was
repeatedly raped by Garrido.)
(--Jaycee has two daughters
with Garrido who are now 15 and 11 years old.)
(--Last week, the girls were
with Garrido handing out fliers on the campus of UC Berkeley, and their
interaction struck a campus officer as suspicious. So she ran a background check on Garrido and
learned he's a convicted sex offender.)
(--Then, in a meeting with his
parole officer, Garrido admitted what he'd done and handed over Jaycee and the
girls.)
--Anyway, over the
past few days a bunch of new information has come to light, and we figured we'd
get you caught up.
#1.) In 1977, Garrido was sentenced
to 50 years in prison for kidnapping, and LIFE in prison for rape. But he was granted early release in 1988,
after just 11 years in prison. (???)
#2.) Apparently, Garrido met with
his parole officer several times a month, and was subject to routine surprise
home visits and random drug and alcohol tests.
(--Those home visits must have been pretty thorough, no?) (???)
#3.) Jaycee's daughters never went
to school or to the doctor and, according to Jaycee's stepfather, they were
never even told that Jaycee had been kidnapped by Garrido.
#4.) In 2006, a neighbor called the
police on Garrido, describing him as a psychotic sex addict who was living with
children and had people staying in tents in his backyard.
--A sheriff's deputy
talked with Garrido for a half-hour on his front porch, but never went into the
house or the backyard. He informed
Garrido that the tents in his yard could be a code violation, but he never
bothered to check if Garrido was a sex offender.
--According to a
police spokesman, quote, "I cannot change the course of events, but we are
beating ourselves up over this and continue to do so. We should have been more inquisitive, more
curious and turned over a rock or two."
(--You think?)
#5.) On Friday, Phillip and Nancy,
these MONSTERS, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to dozens of charges,
including forcible abduction, rape and false imprisonment. (Google
