(Or maybe I'm exaggerating for comic effect. Just work with me.) On my second and third listens, the confusion melted away. Beneath the beats, besides the lack of guitar, I heard the same intensity. I stopped thinking about "The Catalyst" as a "Linkin Park song." Ten years after Hybrid Theory, I was presently surprised.

Now I've read a review claiming that A Thousand Suns might be Linkin Park's answer to Kid A, the Radiohead album that dominated my personal playlist when Linkin Park was an emerging artist. In 2000, I knew "Creep" and respected OK Computer. It wasn't until I heard Kid A and saw them that summer that I fell hard for Radiohead's intensely emotional electronic sound. Maybe A Thousand Suns ...

Celebrating Frank Thomas

My man took me to Frank Thomas Day at the Cell yesterday. As we watched Sox greats from the past assemble on the field to honor the Big Hurt's achievements, I remembered a conversation we'd had when we first started dating. Paul said that he believed Frank Thomas was one of the few future Hall of Famers whose career would never be tainted by accusations of steroid use. He cited Frank's work ethic and willingness to submit to drug testing. He believes that in a game where our heroes fall from grace almost daily, Frank Thomas is standing tall.
Yesterday's celebration also reminded me just how cynical I've become in the years since I went to my first baseball game. I'm not shocked when I read "Roger Clemens" and "perjury" in the same headline. I'm not even that sad about athletes airing their dirty laundry anymore. If I've put someone ...

Will Forte: OUT At SNL

Saturday Night Live just got a little less funny with the departure of Will Forte. After the moderate success of the MacGruber spinoff movie, Will has decided to pursue other projects and leave SNL behind. While I certainly enjoyed watching MacGruber's hapless antics and subsequent explosions, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for his blue-clad Closet Organizer:

Allow me to show you a variety of pictures taken with my trusty BlackBerry over the last few months...

In what has become an annual tradition, my man and I traveled to a new ballpark over Memorial Day weekend. This time, it was actually a NEW park: behold Target Field, where Joe Mauer is king, and there's meat on a stick.

While we were in Minneapolis, we went to the Mall of America, saw the giant T-Rex at the LEGO store, and generally behaved like giddy children.

Fine: this picture could have been taken at any time during the past two years. I'm a cat lady. I take pictures of my cat. You'll just have to trust me that it was taken in June.

Together!

This past Monday, I had some awesome pancakes at the Bongo Room. The pancakes there are always delicious, but this time was SPECIAL. Behold: the Banana Bacon Pancake:

What you see in the photo above: banana pancakes with CRUMBLED BACON IN THE BATTER, drenched in warm white chocolate sauce. Genius! Why eat a bite of bacon followed by a forkful of pancake when you can eat them together? Naturally, I'd love to try these at home, even though I know I'll fall horribly short of the fluffy, sweet-and-salty goodness of the Bongo Room. This bacon pancake recipe looks like a solid base for experimenting: what would you mix with your bacon pancake?

OR IS IT?

When I saw this list of the 20 greatest drummers of the last 25 years, according to the readers of the U.K.'s Rhythm Magazine, I was skeptical before I even read it. Online polls are always shady. A dedicated fan base with computer access and agile fingers can sway results faster than you can say "internet hoax."

Then I actually READ the thing and noticed one glaring error: NO DANNY CAREY!!! Danny handles the changes in tempo and time signature featured throughout the Tool catalog with ease, and his live performance is truly magnificent. The man is a beat-keeping beast. The Brits must be crazy to overlook him.

After sharing the list on Twitter and Facebook, my observant listeners noticed even MORE omissions: no Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam/Soundgarden), no Dom Howard (Muse), not even Lars-friggin'-Ulrich! SHENANIGANS!

Time to make our own list. The comments section is yours.

I've been impressed with his wine making endeavors since seeing Blood Into Wine earlier this year: the man takes multi-talented to new levels. Want to learn more? Gut reaction: "wow, this is... wait, techno? Weird." After a few more listens, I've decided I dig it. Look, I had hot and sexy dancer friends with whom I went out dancing during the late 90's, so I'm down with techno. I've worn body glitter. Shiny things are fun. Anyway. The song isn't what I expected, and I give Linkin Park credit for that. Lots of bands are formulaic in 2010. "The Catalyst" is definitely something different.
